I'm super pumped about this game. It takes the kind of combat, RPG elements, and co-op experience I like and blends it into one game. It also further validates my PS3 purchase which isn't too shabby either as it is an exclusive for that console.
Notice the "would" I put in the poll question; feel free to vote even if you'll never get the game because you are poor and can't buy a PS3.

I'm kind of leaning towards Priest, but I'm also considering playing as a Royal or Thief.

I picked Thief because I'm poor and I steal stuff.

4 days. Definitely going to be a Priest. Any of my PS3 brothers getting this game? (now's a good time to add everyone's PS3 ID's, finally)

I'm ridiculously pumped for this game.

Well, it looks better than the equally as overhyped Killzone 2, and I guess playing with others wil be fun.

I'm not sure if I'm willing to buy it now, but maybe around the holidays since Tatsunoko vs Capcom was pushed back to January and I need a multiplayer game alongside New Super Mario Bros Wii.

Also, $299 lol.

Comparing a stupid-hard-looking RPGish deal to a badass manly shooter is no sense make.

I'm talking about how they're both considered AAA titles for the system and how fanboys claimed them to be the shining beacons of the PS3 library.

Except Killzone 2 oozed generic from every aspect of the product while Demon's Soulds doesn't. It also helps that marketing didn't shove this game down every orifice of my body.

Atlus has been publishing some pretty quality stuff recently and this looks interesting, but it also seems like it's reminding me of older From Software games. Maybe I'll get it when I finish all the other games I have. I'm not buying much these days.

TEM's Impressions After 5 Hours

This is a solid game and if continues as started might be one of the greatest games I've ever played.

The visual design is just "Wow." I can't think of anything else much to say. The character models and speech actually have character in it. The architecture in the game is stunning, particularly in the Nexus (but I haven't seen the vast majority of the game so can't say which part is the "best" quite yet). The overall theme is on the gray gritty side, but is punctuated by colorful brightness in a way that makes it significant. Example: the lounging dragons in the Boletaria Palace "stage".

The music is just fantastic. I haven't liked an original musical score this much in a while, and I'm not restricting that to video games. Sound effects sound good, can't really get worked up about those though. The voice acting is great, and as I mentioned earlier, is full of character and is simply fun to listen to despite what they are saying.

The game play is what hardcore video game fans dream of. It is unforgiving. It will make you cry. You will be spanked. You will be unsure where to go and get your face stabbed by a guy you shouldn't be fighting for another 50 soul levels. Most of this is due to what I'll call "culture clash". Death and experience work in unique ways. After you get accustomed to this and wipe your tears, the game is less terrifying and more fun.

The multiplayer works a bit differently from what I imagined. Co-op isn't straight forward co-op and the two different Versus modes have higher stakes than what most people are used to. The strangest thing of all is the Black Phantom mechanic. While playing your game another player can invade and their main goal is to hunt you down and kill you, at great possible peril to themselves if they should fail by anyway besides being killed by you. To join someone's game you usually have to be "dead". Anyway, my point is that this game should be viewed as a single player game with unique and awesome multiplayer quirks.

Tips: Read the manual, figure out how everything works down to the last detail.

Read the messages left by other players and be certain to heed them if they have been rated more than a few times. Keep in mind if you leave a good message your HP gets refilled every time someone says they like it.

THIS GAME WILL MAKE YOU CRY: NPCs can permanently die if you kill them, pathways may lead to foes presently too tough to fight, your actions will have serious ramifications on the world, read up on white and black tendencies and how you and other players affect them.

EDIT MOST IMPORTANT ADVICE:

He/She who fights and runs away lives to fight another day.

This game sounds incredibly awesome. Is the Black Phantom mechanic simply for griefing or is there a reward for success?

I hear there's no pause button, which makes sense and makes the game even more brutal.

Yes, the Black Phantom is a highly motivated individual, it isn't just being a jerk. BEWARE.

Wow, that is nightmare mode incarnate.

I guess I'll be picking this up then.

TEM, you'll earn our absolute respect if you can complete that game without resorting to an online walkthrough. Apparently, it's brutally difficult even by Japanese standards.

Last time I checked, TEM actually plays video games rather than letting other people do it for him.

This game sounds so straight-up manly I just have to play it.

I just did my first blue phantom attempt. The guy with the body summoned two of us, the other phantom died before we even got to the boss. Me and the other guy whipped the Tower Knight; I got my body back and a buttload of souls, it was awesome. I ranked the guy as high as I could because he knew what was going on and was kicking as much butt as I was.

I just encountered my first Black Phantoms today, within about 5 minutes of each other. I personally performed the backstab fatality move on both of them, my soul tendency is now either pure white or very close, feels good man. I also realized that if you get killed while in blue phantom mode (at least by the boss) you keep all the souls you earned.

I'm eagerly anticipating what LD has to say about this game.

Why I Love Demon's Souls
By Lizard Dude

Fear of Death
The first wonderful thing about Demon's Souls is this: You cannot save, you cannot load, you cannot pause even in menus. Everything you do is permanent and real. Most games really hurt the experience by allowing players unlimited quicksaving/quickloading or numerous checkpoints. That might be more convenient, but it really wrecks the flow and feel of a game. Nothing feels risky. A numbness develops. But in Demon's Souls, when you're alive you feel alive. You want to live. You care. If you see something ahead that looks dangerous, you carefully consider your actions instead of just rushing in to see what happens, reloading if neccessary. The game ended up like this as a byproduct of its multiplayer, but even when you're by yourself it really adds to the experience.

Combat System
The second wonderful thing about Demon's Souls is this: The combat is really really good. This sure ain't Final Fantasy, it's not World of Warcraft, and it isn't even Diablo. It's entirely action- and skill-based, but your limited stamina makes each move important. If you just repeatedly attack, you're going to get creamed. The fighting system is rich and deep, with multiple attack types per weapon, parrying, ripostes, and guard breaks. It's basically a dungeon-crawl with Soulcalibur Lite combat. And that's totally rad.

Potential To Do Anything
The third wonderful thing about Demon's Souls is this: Your character has no limits. Your starting class determines your initial gear and stats, but you can eventually do anything you want. You can learn every spell in the game even if you start as a Barbarian. You can wear plate armor as a Magician. It will just take longer to get there. Additionally, you can use any weapon or wear any gear at any time no matter your stats. You will just suck at it. I was messing around with a giant club I didn't have the strength for and laughed as my guy couldn't even get it off the ground during a rolling attack. Another neat thing is that since each hand is individually equippied and controlled, you can effectively use advanced one-handed weapons you aren't strong enough for if you use both hands at once.

Level Design
If you've played any God of War you know the feeling when you're going through a big convoluted temple or something and come out upon a balcony and think, "Oh I'm there!" Demon's Souls is great at that at well. I haven't seen the entire game yet, but what I have is great. It's also really good at letting you create natural shortcuts back to earlier areas, which you can then use if you die and have to start over.

Insane Multiplayer
And perhaps the most unique thing about Demon's Souls: the multi. Seeing the real-time ghosts of other players as they're playing their own game. Reading messages people have left. Watching how other people died. Summoning dead people to help you beat your game. Helping other people's games to come back to life yourself. Invading someone else's essentially single-player game universe and killing them. This stuff is just straight up crazy pimp.

Act Fast
My only fear about Demon's Souls is that people who play it a long time from now will have a significantly lessened experience because there won't be nearly as many other people playing it. If you have interest in this game and the ability to obtain it, I strongly suggest playing it now, not later.

Well, that all sounds awesome except for that last bit. Right now I'm console-less and, gaming-wise, broke, and I've always been kind of late to the party when it comes to cool stuff.

You cannot save

The above statement singlehandedly epitomizes everything that is wrong in the world. No doubt you meant, "...except for at exceedingly sparse intervals", but... still. Euughhh

I'm pretty sure he means it's a save-on-exit, load-on-start kind of thing - like NetHack minus the savescumming.

But in Demon's Souls, when you're alive you feel alive. You want to live. You care.
I have to majorly agree with this, I just recently got out of soul form after being there for what felt like forever and then killed a boss, having a body is like a social statement.

Weegee: You never manually save, the game saves very frequently and automatically after almost every single imaginable thing. It's part of the infamous difficulty of the game. Choose wisely.

So the opposite of what I was saying and yet also probably the best way to apply a Roguelike style to a realtime multiplayer game, in other words. Pretty awesome.

On a related note, the picture I attached is the look on my face whenever I lose my body in Demon's Souls.

This game sounds like its only fit for the most manliest of men.

TEM, hold another contest and send a copy of the game to the winner. That might speed up their puberty or give them facial hair or something.
