With the decade behind us, a clearer perspective of it as a whole is to be gained. So, fellow frequenters of TMK, let me ask you this: What's your verdict on this millennium thus far?
-
Not anywhere as futuristic as I was lead to believe it would be. Hopefully it'll finally be the future in this decade.
-
Seconded. I want a hover car in the next five years, and I want it cheap; say, about $39,999.95.
-
I still want to know how to pronounce the name of the decade. The Double-Zeros? The Ohs? The Aughts? The Naughts?
-
"Two-thousands"
-
You mean 2000-2099? Or 2000-2999?
-
I, for some terrible reason, say it as The Aughts.
-
It's scary to know that, in 60 or 65 years' time, I'll be listening to century-old music.
-
Don't be scared.
I'm sure you'll be deaf.
-
Why is this scary? I listen to century-old (and older) music all the time.
-
It's scary to know that, in 60 or 65 years' time, I'll be dead. I'm betting on it, actually.
-
Anyway, this letter (http://www.mayerthorpefreelancer.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2247856) summarizes my feelings regarding this past decade quite nicely. Really, it's amazing to consider how trivial the expected implications of "Y2K" were, not to mention those millennial doomsday proclamations, compared to everything else which occurred in the nine years which followed.

"Two-thousands"
This. Deal with it.
As for my analysis of the first full decade I've ever lived through, just imagine this is the opening of A Tale of Two Cities, except with intermittent references to videogames, the internet, and junk food.
-
Where's my friggen jet-pack? I'm pretty sure I was promised a jet-pack.
-
Food for thought: At the beginning of this decade, gamers were just speculating about the long-awaited Nintendo "Dolphin" and its portable counterpart, the "Atlantis". Who knew that all the technical power of a SNES could be packed into a handheld device?
-
Who knew we would have DNA testing and forensics? as disturbing as it is.
-
Jet packs have existed since the 60s, look up rocket belts. And hovercars? They have hovercraft and helicopters, why don't these qualify as "flying cars"?
-
The bottom line: Heads will roll if we aren't living like the Jetsons by 2020. As soon as the opportunity arises, I'm buying a robotic... err, "maid".
And naming it Pamela.

I did, but that was way before the decade describe in this thread. Last year I used 23andme. It's interesting what you can find out about yourself. Although I don't have the currently identified longevity genes I can foresee living for 60 to 65 more years based on research in several areas I've been following.

People fantasize about dramatic revolutions in consumer electronics, but you have to remember that company isn't going to sell something that isn't profitable. There's just no cost-effective way at this point to sell jetpacks at Wal-Mart, and that's to say nothing of the safety issues associated with it. You know why we're probably never going to have flying cars? Because of how litigious people are, among other things.
