Good question,  and while you ask that Ill ask why couldnt KingKoopa be Nintendos mascot?      easy- Mario is the first person introduced.
i refer you back to the Donkey Kong  and "jumpman"  who later became known as mario and had a brother named luigi added in.

I don't know. It's a shame that Mario (AKA the worst of the two) has to be the leader all the time. Everybody agrees too. You never hear people saying, "yeah, go Mario, your rcok!" It's always, "get out of the way Mario, let Luigi in! Yeah, go Luigi! Luigi's cool!"

It's just because Mario was invented firt, which is totally unfair.

I think that Mario is a fine mascot.

And why not Peach?

Mario is the mascot, simply because he is the most recognized. Therfore, you won't see luigi, Peach, Koopa or Toad be the mascot of Nintendo.

And Nintendo does have other mascots. Need I say Pikachu and Link? Samus too, perhaps.
