Title: Nintendo Power presents: The Official Guide to Mario
Post by: Weegee on April 04, 2010, 05:05:07 PM
Nintndo Power has recently released a collectible feature dedicated entirely to Mario. In typical Future US style, all of its 44 pages are devoid of humour, personality or self-reference, to the extent that even Mario's Early Years: Preschool Fun and Mario Is Missing! are mentioned in a neutral light. However, the package as a whole is interesting, and belongs on any Mario fan's shelf.

You have until June 22 to acquire it, so fret not.

By the way, every copy includes, just as depicted, an actual strand of my hair embedded in the cover's top-right corner.

I picked this up a couple of days ago, even though I kinda had to cut into my funding for SMG2 to do so. It's a cute read and the posters and stickers ought to come in handy.

Yes, because I really want to read a pamphlet's worth of GamesRadar Power pretending to give a [darn] about Mario. I have the original Mario Mania, thanks.

I must have this. Where can you find it and how much does it cost?

Any self-respecting book store would supply in the "electronics/gaming" section of their magazine rack, so look there. As for the price, it's $12.99 in our Monopoly money (http://www.flickr.com/photos/joezeppi/2670723840/), meaning that it's probably 9 or 10 bucks for you.

I'm certainly intrigued.  I'll have to look into it (read it from front to back) before I decide whether or not to buy it.

Don't cha just love how all the artwork on the cover consists of renders from the past two generations and nothing else?

Huh. I don't even recognize most of those renders.

I count at least 5 that I'm almost certain are new. Definitely don't recognize the Yoshi one or the two hatless ones.

Agreed, Chef. It's a travesty how even Wing Cap Mario has been supplanted by an SMG render with wings shoddily attached to the hat. As for the hatless sprites, I'm fairly certain that the one on the right is from MP8.

I only said what I said because it would've probably made more sense to include official artwork from all of Mario's past outings in a so-called "official guide to Mario".

...And I agree completely.

I especially like the screenshot caption on page 23.

I'm entertained by mixed-level profanities.

That makes me think of Tales of Symphonia, which in my mind is kind of the king of those.

... OH MY PORK ! ALL THOSE UNUSED-YET ARTWORKS !!!

Too bad I don't live in America and my dad would never want to import something from there. ;_;
But, heh, I know basically everything about Mario, his adventures, his personnality, his psychology, his friends, and his world. But those artworks are freaking beautiful.

*checks*

Wow. I have no idea how I missed that. Or the people that wrote this thing for that matter.

I'd also like to point out that the list of power-ups on pages 10 & 11 has FLUDD and the Small Heart from SMB2 (which is a bit of a stretch in my opinion), but does not mention the Wing Cap, Metal Cap or Vanish Cap.

I especially like the screenshot caption on page 23.

I didn't notice it either. For the curious, it's beneath a shot of Raccoon Mario traversing an ice level, and reads:

Quote from: Nintendo Power

What?  Pic, please.

Also, I took a brief glance at the magazine at a local F.Y.E., and it didn't quite seem worth the ~$15 investment.

I expected no less. Well, I expected a little more than dummy text and Photoshopped character art, but that was clearly gratuitous.

I read the magazine and one thing they forgot was the Nintendo Game Watch. That was my first intro to Mario. How can Ninenteo miss that. Horrible!!!!!

Well, the first thing to remember is that they're not Nintendo.

New censor suggestion: Change all utterances of "Nintendo" to "Ninenteo".

I bought it as quick as possible. A quality guide, I just wish it had more info.
