Does it bother anyone else that they changed the graphics for "Super Mario All-Stars"? I liked the original Nintendo releases of "Mario 1" and "Mario 3" better. I haven't played "Mario 2" for a long time and I'm not sure exactly what was changed.
-
I don't think they changed much for the American Mario 2. I love that game.
*unpacks suitcase, holds up Playstation*
How did this get in here? Somebody's playing a prank on me! Honestly, it's not mine!
-
I love Mario in all its guises so even little graphic differences can be cool however SMB 1 should forever remain untouched as it is the holy grail of the video game world.
-
Wow, this bump beats mine, and that's when there is a currently active thread about necroposting.
-

That's B.S.
I love enhanced remakes. But off the top of my head, SMAS, Super Mario 64 DS, and Street Fighter II: Really Long Title You Know The One From XBLA are the only ones I can think of. I want want want want want Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask remade with higher-quality graphics than even Twilight Princess had...
-
Ugh. Why is everyone still talking about Super Nintendo? The Dolphin is all the rage these days. But, Super Mario RPG II sounds cool.
-
I don't really like SMASSMB's graphics that much (although for some reason I love Mario Forever's graphics, which are the exact same thing), but I would like to see some updated graphics for SMB. The originals are nice, but they're also getting extremely cliched. It probably ties in with my general annoyance that only the NES is considered "retro" while the SNES tends to get ignored. I would incidentally love to see a remake of OoT that had WW graphics for the Child parts and TP (or better) graphics for the Adult parts.
Glitchy, get with the program. It's called Paper Mario Story now.
I can't wait to get PMS!
Also I'm pretty sure the Dolphin is the Starcube now.
-
(BP, R-TYPE Dimensions and the most recent Fire Emblem title are both enhanced remakes.)
I like enhanced remakes as long as they don't change the physics (like they did in that PSP Castlevania game) or do something else to screw it up.
-
Really, Warp? You don't like it if they change the physics? Is that why you hate Zero Mission so much?
-
It would have been better if they just had the option to choose how you would want to play SMAS.
-
Really, Warp? You don't like it if they change the physics? Is that why you hate Zero Mission so much?
Yep! I only have it now so that I have a legit copy of the original Metroid I can play on my DS.
-
Wait, you hate Zero Mission?
Why do you hate quality? What did quality ever do to you?
-
I wasn't being serious, of course - I really couldn't care less about being able to play the original Metroid on my DS. I don't hate Zero Mission, but then, the physics changes in it didn't completely screw up the way the game is played like they did in other remakes. Bomb-jumping is definitely too easy, though.
-
Besides, I'm pretty sure it uses the same ROM that was used for NES Classics, what with the squished tiles and sprites.
-
Warp, what the heck? If you're referring to The Dracula X Chronicles, the physics are satisfyingly original. Or as close to original as necessary to make it awesome.
Anyway, for my part, I dislike playing SMAS-SMB because the brick breaking physics are screwed, but I do for the most part enjoy the graphical enhancements.
P.S. to nensondubois, SMAS-SMB's physics are messed up by mistake, not because they thought they were improving it.
I don't mind this bump since it actually sparked some conversation.
-
Though I think we have a new world record for "bump with the longest time since previous post", at least here on the Fungi Forums.
-
Yeah, no kidding... I didn't look at the date of the first post, so I was a bit confused for a sec there: "Mega 2? Hmm, must be new... wait, AustinPowers, another new guy? And this is the kind that reposts his sig, no less. *Scrolls down, then back* Oh...
Anyway, this is a good topic, so I'll just say that though the tropical music and oasis-esque backgrounds in SMB were odd (as was not changing the color of his clothes correctly), but enhancing the graphics is what remakes are all about (among other things). Besides, the game has been remade in its original form several times since, so if you want that it's not too hard to get ahold of.
-
I remember when Mega 2 posted somewhat regularly.
-
I almost posted about how I felt about SMAS before making the bump comment instead, but the graphical changes are nothing exciting, and the music is terrible. I get the feeling they made every possible attempt to make it sound as different from an NES as possible, and it really kills the mood a lot of the time for me.
-
The sound differences could have been better, and I was disappointed about SMB's graphical update, but SMB2 and SMB3 were updated quite nicely, IMO. I'm most upset, though, that they didn't keep the odd graphics in SMB2(J), e.g. the mushroom platforms, bushes with eyes.
-
I like the SMAS versions of the music, for the most part. I don't like that they messed up the World 5 map music in SMB3 though.
-
How did they mess it up?
-
They changed the steel drum to a wood block, mainly.
Also, I don't hate the SMB1 music changes.
-
It's an improvement, but I also liked the original. I liked both so I don't really care what they do with the graphics, as long as they don't make it worse.
-
Hard to make graphics worse than the NES, am I right?
Please don't get all mad at me for not conforming to the retro love fad. Technically speaking, the NES sucked, and the only really fantastic game on it that I can think of that didn't get a remake later is StarTropics... There's a bit of charm to old 8-bit graphics but most fans go overboard with it. I like good-looking and good-sounding games. When I'm playing a great game with sucky graphics, one of the first things I think is "Dang this would be so much better on [console with better graphics]." Lots of handheld games make me think that. StarTropics REALLY makes me think that, passionately.
All this boils down to my reasoning behind liking Super Mario All-Stars' versions better than the original... except for SMB's freaking brick physics. Someone needs to hack it, fix that, and release a patch. Super Mario Bros. 2 and 3 in All-Stars are great-looking, -sounding and they play like the originals, so no problems there. If only I liked SMB2 more...
Actually between the time I typed that and now, I FOUND A PATCH!! (http://insectduelromhacks.googlepages.com/improv) It's a normal IPS, LIPS will patch your ROM (SMAS or SMAS+SMW) in a jiffy. Works like a charm.
-
Someone already ... yeah.
Anyway, I love old chiptune music, and I also love bad graphics because it tricks your imagination into thinking that stuff is way cooler than it is. If you're just looking at the picture on the screen, you're doing it wrong.
-
I personally prefer 16-bit graphics the best. I hope by the time I turn 20, people from my generation will start a 90s fad that takes the place of the 80s fad. Then the real cream of Nintendo's crop will get the appreciation it deserves.
-
The problem is that most stuff in the '90s was in fact not cool at all.
-
:'(
-
Chup is right. The '90s were not cool.
They were rrrrraaaaaaaaadicaaalllllll.
-
The 90s gave us the SNES, the N64, the best animated television shows ever put out by American studios, and the Internet. What's not cool about it?
-
The Internet? The Internet was around in at least the '80s. Technically, its foundations have been around since the '60s. I don't know what shows you're referring to except maybe Dexter's Lab. What's not cool about it is the burning, aching need to be cool that everything exuded throughout the decade.
-
I think it would be more accurate to say that no era ever was completely cool and was in reality riddled with stupidity. Time periods only appear to be cool when you ignore all of the uncool things.

I can name tons of shows from the 90s that ruled. Where in Hades were you when Batman: The Animated Series or Animaniacs or even Rolie Polie Olie showed up?
-
A lot of those shows were awesome because you grew up watching them. I mean, what's better than being 7 and watching Batman: The Animated Series. When I was young I was crazy about Beast Wars but looking back, it's incredibly lame. Also, the best cartoon from the '90s is Rocko's Modern Life.
-
You have to admit that a lot of the kids' shows made in the 90s are generally of better quality than those made in the 80s. Batman TAS definitely stands the test of time, that much I can tell you.

QFT, but I want a sequel to Mario Kart 64. Knowing Nintendo, they'll call it "Mario Kart Dolpin". Meh, they need a new gimmick. Mario Kart is getting boring. Hopefully it's not as dumb as like, two people on one kart. I would NEVER but that game.
-
Okay, Chef, you got me and yes all 3 of those shows are great. Also X-Men.
-
Good thing I got you now. Otherwise I'd have to rattle off a whole bunch of other stuff.
-
[Post about graphics]
I'm inclined to agree with BP here. While I don't judge a game's awesomeness on its graphics, awesome games with lame or mediocre graphics (even if they were good at the time) make me wish there'd be a remake with better ones to make it even more awesome.
I do like NES SMB's music better than SMAS's, though. I think it's more catchy.
On another note, YES! Animaniacs is awesome, and while I'm not that fond of Batman, I loved Superman: The Animated Series. While not all cartoons were great, after Animaniacs ended, cartoons went majorly downhill. (Anyone remember Hysteria? *Shudder*) Now most cartoons basically look and seem about the same to me--within each genre, of course.
-
As far as American cartoons goes, you mean.
I don't know about you people, but I could play a game made of different colored blocks and think it was totally great as long as it had good physics. That of course is taking abstraction to its furthest point, but all games are are abstractions anyway, just of varying degrees, so I don't see why games with primitive graphics need remakes.
-
Meh. I'm different. I like looking at games as much as I like playing them. I stop and look at Lake Hylia from the Cucco House in Twilight Princess. I get up close and personal with people and objects and look at the details or lack thereof. I watch cutscenes over and over to look at things that go unnoticed. I've examined Brawl pretty thoroughly, in-game and out. Ocarina of Time is a perfect example of a game that's surviving the test of time in most ways, but it has so many potentially great-looking areas. Twilight Princess' Temple of Time has proven that.
The argument that graphics are completely unimportant is bogus. Are you going to excuse pitiful special effects and acting in films if the story is magnificent? No, you're going to complain about it. And don't get me wrong--I don't disregard games if they're not realistic. Art style is important. Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, Super Mario Galaxy, Wind Waker, F-ZERO GX, and Mirror's Edge stand out. GX mainly because I'm a sucker for neon lights.

I said this before (and it didn't come out right), but it's pointless and illogical to judge things you used to like based on your current preferences. Of course you don't like it now, because TV shows are like every other form of media: Targeted at a certain group of people. Besides, everything sucks and everything is awesome at once; it all is just a point of view. The internet sometimes seems to have difficulty understanding "Good" and "bad" are opinions.
