And when I first played SMB, my family thought the goombas were puppies.  Weird huh?

Actually, I've always called him Bowser, as did everyone my age in my piece of the world. Believe it or not, I actually had not heard about the name King Koopa until quite recently. I think the SMB instruction manual called him Bowser, so I've stuck with it.

He was "the Dragon."  In the Japanese release of "Super Mario Bros."," he's called "Kuupaa Lung," meaning "snapping dragon."  His full name in Japan is "Bowsu Kuupaa no Wang," "King Bowser Koopa."  "Bowsu" may mean "Fiery," I'm not sure.  It's either a verb or an adjective.  "Kuupaa" and "Koopa" seem to be interchangable in Japanese "Mario" texts.

I had a Super NES before I had an NES. Because of the cartoons, I thought that on the NES he was called King Koopa and on the SNES he was called Bowser.

When I was really young I called him 'the green guy'.(I used to just watch my brother play SMB,I rarely played when I was that young.) When I got older, and learned his name, I called him Bowser.

I think the whole "Koopa King" started with the Super Mario Super Show.  I don't think they called him Bowser once there... Something about lisencing rights.

They called him Bowser all the time.  The way I found out his name was Bowser was from the cartoon show.

Yeah, but if we refer to Bowser as Bowser, why do we call them the Koopa Kids?

They are Koopas, and they are kids...so we call them the Koopa kids, or the Koopalings.

I've always called him Bowser, King of the Koopas because that is what the manual called him. However, because I was pretty young and not all that good with English yet, I pronounced it "Bos-eh-rr, King of Koh-pas".

Look, it's not like "Bowser" and "Koopa" are alternate names.  His name is "Bowser Koopa," thus it's only logical that some sources will call him "Bowser" and some "King Koopa."  I think most of the game manuals call him "Bowser Koopa," and that's what they called him on the "Super Mario Bros. 3" cartoon show.

Even after SMW when I learned that his name was Bowser, I called him King Koopa (until you couldn't avoid it without weird looks), becasue I don't care what Bowser means, it's a better name for a chubby pitbul than a gigantic koopa.

Kweeh! Forget Whark! Kweeh! Is better!

I called him "King Bowser" or something like that.  I knew all the names of the original SMB and SMB3 enemies and only called them that and chewed off the head of anyone who got 'em wrong. :P

I just called him "the turtle" just like the Koopa Troopas. I started calling him Bowser when I got older.

My family used to think the Koopa Troopas were ducks despite my alternate claims.
I either call him Bowser or King Koopa... I treat them both as the same being, but when I say King Koopa I usually mean the one in the cartoon, and Bowser means all other incarnations. ^_^
Oh the madness...

Koopa Troopas are a cross between turtles and ducks.  Before any of us knew the names, me and my cousin came up with our own names for the enemies.  We called Koopa Troopas Turkey Lurkeys.

Koopa Troopas have nothing to do with ducks... what with them not looking anything like ducks except through an old person's eyes on the original SMB back in the late 80's... when everyone was weird anyway...

O.K., in "Super Mario Bros 3" the bird component looks more like a parrot, but they're clearly a turtle/bird chimera.

When I first started playing games that featured Bowser, my attention span wasn't long enough to allow me to actually -finish- the game... that was all before in-cart save options were available.

I knew Koopa was there, though, and I called him King Koopa.  I can specifically remember playing Super Mario World and thinking, "why the heck does Koopa's castle say 'Bowser' on it?"

Why are there a bunch of Bowsers in "Super Mario Bros.," "Lost Levels," "Vs. Super Mario Bros.," etc. but only 1 in later games?

Those are just imposters. If you kill any Bowser up to 8-4 with fireballs, when they fall off the screen you'll see their true self, like a Goomba or Beetle, depending on the level. This could only be possible thanks to Bowser's "black magic" mentioned in the SMB manual...
Technically, the imposters shouldn't be considered Bowsers, since the real one is always in 8-4, but it's still safe to call them Bowser because they all have his powers and yield 5000 points when fireballed.
By the way, Super Mario 64 has three Bowser battles, but it's just the same Bowser coming back for more.

Because the first 7 were fakes. If you killed them with fireballs you would see which enemy it was. Like, the first one was a goomba, then it was a Koopa Troopa.

P.S. On SMB, I thought the goomba's feet was a mustache. SMB had really bad graphics for anything that moved.

I know they turn into stuff like shells, Hammerheads, and roasted Goombas, but I never thought of them as having been created from those Koopas.

I want to get this straight. His name in most of the Super Mario cartoons, it was King Koopa. What people should call him now, is Bowser because that is his real name. One of my pet peeves is whenever I watch a Mario cartoon, they call him Koopa. His name is Bowser!
Title: Re: What did everyone first call Bowser?

I've said this before, but nobody listens.  His name is "Bowser Koopa" it has been "Bowser Koopa" since the release of the original "Super Mario Bros.," it is "Bowser Koopa" in every "Mario" game, cartoon, comic, or other tie-in.  He is sometimes referred to by his title, "King Koopa," and sometimes by his first name, "Bowser," but they're the same person and the same name, and both are used in the cartoons and in different games.  It's not that difficult to understand.

Hey Mega 2. I know it's not hard to understand. You ARE right and I DO agree. What I'm saying, is that it's not King Koopa. Bowser Koopa is fine.
