Title: Why doesn't Mario talk in SMS?
Post by: Markio on June 29, 2003, 10:32:56 AM
In Super Mario Sunshine, Mario doesn't talk at the court or when they arrive at the air port. You can see his mouth moving, but nothing comes out. In the next Mario game, he should be able to talk, opposed to everyone else but him talking.

Because it's partly an adventure game, and in most adventure games (like Zelda), the hero doesn't talk, like in RPGs. The only adventure-type game I know of where the hero talks is Star Fox Adventures...

Mario did speak in SMS. A voiceover at the title screen and when entering certain areas(voiceovers as well) His actual character did say "Mama Mia" in M64 when he was thrown out of a level.

He means actual speech. Not catchfrases and voiceovers. Put it this way. Why didn't he actually say the words in the speechbubbles?
"I see!" said the blind man, to his deaf son, as the no-legged man walked by.

It's what CW said. It makes you feel that YOU'RE actually the hero, vs. just simply controlling him(or her). YOU take on that role. If Mario talked, it would take away that feeling. To quote Toad from SMRPG, Mario's "the strong, silent type." ;P

Mario was saying, "Peach, your buns are big."
Peach just decided to wear her invisible headphones so she wouldn't hear Mario. She put them on everyone who ever lived so no one could hear Mario and that's why we don't hear anything.
Ok, ok, that's not true, but I'm getting mad at Nintendo for being bad with voices...
My favorite Mario line is in SM64 where Mario's in his sleep and he says "Ah spagetti, ah ravoli, ah Mama Mia!" or something like that! Does anyone have a WAV of that? I'd really REALLY appriciate it!

He says "I'm-a tired!" Anyway, Mario says Mama Mia in SMS too, and Let's-a go and Here we go and in we go, you just have to listen.
Although, I don't quite agree with Sapphira about not feeling like you're the person... I feel more like I'm Fox McCloud in SFA than I feel like anyone else in any game, and Fox talks through the whole game.
"Well thanks for nothing! If it wasn't for me, you wouldn't be standing here at all!"

Oh yeah, Mario says "AAAAAAHHHHH... Arrivederci..." when you run out of life energy or time, too. Oh and he says "MAAMA! Hot, hot hot..." when you run into fire.

"What, do you know no Italian? It means "goodbye."" --No, I just don't remember him saying that.
Hmm...what's 'deodarant'? Some sort of new combo? I know what 'deodOrant' is, though... ;P

He doesn't always say it, because sometimes it fades out before you can hear him, and he says it really quiet.

Hmm...I guess I'll pay closer attention. I usually catch that sort of stuff. Actually, I've been recently playing SMS again, so this is a perfect chance.

Shame on you! I beat the entire game 5 days after I got it. I think I beat it Sept 3... ;P Then again, I was completely OBSESSED with that game! I hardly even had time for sleeping and eating, I was on it so much...

Same here, I was playing it a ton. I don't see why I should get shame for not finding all the blue coins...? Did you use a guide or something?
And I can't really say whether I like SM64 or SMS better... they each have their strengths and weaknesses... (SM64 has more weaknesses, but its strength lies in its higher heights of platforming. And Mario can duck.)

You don't like SM64 cuz of the graphics.
Heh heh, I know too much. Backwards Pants. Yep. That just shows that I know everything. Go ahead. Throw me a question!

*Ashamed grin* Yeah... I bought the Sunshine Bundle Pak, so I got it free...
Actually, that's the only Player's Guide I have. Although I do have this paperback book entiled "How to Win at Super Mario Bros. Games" --by Jeff Rovin, I think. Anyway, I only used the guide when I got stuck. I do the same for other games, only via internet, scimming walkthroughs to where I'm stuck at... ...And also to make sure I didn't miss anything after beating it the first time...

"You don't like SM64 cuz of the graphics." --No. I don't descriminate games based on graphics. That's shallow. Graphics played a factor, but also in SMS the controls were better; it was a fresh, new theme; you get to be Yoshi (^_^); a cooler, more structured plot line (IMO); and I thought it had more depth--to the characters and situations and all. It seemed more involving, combining Adventure, Platform, and RPG elements, which I really enjoyed.

I have that same thing Sapphira! Only it's not mine, it's my mom's. The only guide I have that I had to pay for is the Metroid Prime one.
I got Luigi's Mansion and Super Mario Sunshine as gifts for subscribing to Nintendo Power.
And the guides for Wario World and Windwaker when I bought the game from K-Mart.

Mario can be a little talk on the SMS.
Luigi can talk on LM.
So, Mario and Luigi need to be more talk on the games.

I hope they come out with a Luigi's Mansion2. I liked that game!
Luigi's Mansion is one of the smallest games of Gamecube! Just imagine-Metroid Prime, when you looked on the maps, there were like 6 areas with over 200 rooms! Luigi's Mansion has only 4 areas with about 55 rooms-hallways included! That's short!

I like neither SM64 nor SMS more than the other one of them. I think I said that somewhere... but it seemed to need reiteration here.
