Title: Mario Tennis "Star"

My brother seems convinced that the little star you can put next to the character's name in Mario tennis by holding down... R, I think, makes it so the person is more powerful, skilled, etc. I explained to him, "No, it's just so you can get to the extra cups in one player mode.", but he wouldn't listen to me. Can I get a confirmation here for either side of the argument?

Yes, the star does boost your stats in Mario Tennis and it also gives you the star tournament option later, but only if every character has the star.
