Title: Disney compared to DreamWorks...
Post by: Mario Maniac on June 19, 2004, 07:28:01 PM
Dreamworks is starting to rival Disney as a high-quality animation company.

Their successful animated movies include:
* The Prince of Egypt
* Shrek
* Shrek 2

Disney has been making animation ever since the 1920's, so they obviously have more experience... However, Dreamworks is very talented, and they have a lot of potential.

Which company do you like better?

Dreamworks isn't talented, the animators are talented.
Sorry, that bugged me.

I like Disney movies more than Dreamworks movies.

I'll go with Dreamworks because Disney does't have an original bone in its body. All their movies are based off of some other story.

Well that's wrong.

Anyway, Disney is better because DreamWorks makes lots of mindless movies, a la Shrek.

The universe is permeated with the odor of turpentine.

Disney's movies make more sense, and has more morality than Dreamworks' movies...

Dreamworks are just there for laughs, nothing really special about them...

You know what's funny?

It's about the movies Disney's A Bug's Life and Dreamworks' Antz...

Both movies:

-were released at the same year, around the same time...

-have similar plots...

-are 3D animated...

-were released by companies that have names that start with the letter 'D'...

-were about ants!

Weird and freaky, huh?

I'm pretty sure one company ripped off the other's idea....
They still both have their individual merit, though.

I can't really pick between them.  Disney has more morality placed in the movies, and Dreamworks has more creative stories.  I like when they make a movie together.

When did they make a movie together, Markio?

I believe Pixar beats both Disney and Dreamworks in the animated movie department. Disney's non-Pixar films have been sub-par ever since Lion King. And Dreamworks makes good computer-generated films, but not just plain animated ones.

I don't really have an opinion on the matter, but I don't mind if my movies have morality inserted into them and the Shrek movies had some very good elements (I went to 2 twice in the theater).

Hooray, I found Internet connection!

In my opinion, Disney's movies are kiddy, immature, and not as funny as DreamWorks. Disney puts too much morality in their movies and heaping doses of morality dumb down a movie.

And don't go telling me "But if you're criticizing Disney for that reason, how come you don't criticize Nintendo for that reason, being that they have equal creative minds?" because they don't. Nintendo is 10,000 times better than Disney.

Pixar no longer works with Disney anymore. They separated about 1 or 2 months ago.

...And now that Disney's going to full 3D (big mistake, in my opinion)...  I dunno.  Their future isn't looking too good.
At least they've got a new president now.... perhaps he can straighten things up.

It's also kind of amusing:  in their move to 3D, Disney ended up laying off a lot of great 2D animators... and Pixar ended up picking them all up.

Disney has taken these great, violent stories from books and turned them into cheap and corny "Fun for the whole family!" They were only good when they teamed up with Pixar. Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and Monsters Inc. were great.

Fact: Pixar movies are made with Macintosh computers.

I thought a 3D movie called Dinosaur was a 100% Disney production, although some of the 3D animators Disney hired were from Pixar...

I like DreamWorks very much, but Disney has been around for so long. I agree that they're going downhill, but I'll always love Disney clasics. My Fav is The Lion King. I like Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin a lot too. Those 3 are probably a few of their best.

How weird, Disney and Nintendo have a lot in common...

Pixar had left Disney the same way RareWare had left Nintendo!!

But, Rareware went with microsoft, Pixar is just an independant company.

The Lion King and Pocahontas are two of the worst movies ever. Before those, most of their stuff was still pretty good. Aladdin is great.

I thought Atlantis was actually pretty good though, and some other recently released movie that I don't remember what it was.

But yeah, Pixar makes better movies than Disney, by a long shot. But I didn't think A Bug's Life was that entertaining.

The universe is permeated with the odor of turpentine.

Well...let's see...tough decision.  I like both companies.  Disney has made a lot of great movies throughout the years.  But the people at Dreamworks did a great job on Shrek and Shrek 2.  Who would have thought a movie about a warped fairy tale world would be such a big hit?

Another problem with Disney is that they neve rleave their good movies alone. Movies that do well like Lion King or Atlantis, which are good movies, they destroy by producing cheap quality, straight to video/DVD sequels/gimmicks. I mean come on, Lion King 1 1/2??? What the heck?!
Also, they either do that, or get a cheesy cartoon version of the movie.

I think I've seen suggestive nudity in some Disney movies, I'm not sure which one...

By the way, do you think Dreamworks can do something as amazing as Disney's Fantasia 2000!?

Ever since Lion King, the only animated, non-Pixar Disney movies I've enjoyed were Emperor's New Groove and Fantasia 2000.

I liked Fantasia 2000, actually.

Oh, and most of those erotic subliminal messages are urban myths, they're false.
But, one of the movies did have a picture of a naked woman around the beginning of the movie, I forget the name of the movie, but it's with the mice....

I know three true ones: The shot you're talking about is in The Rescuers.  In the Lion King, when Simba lies down at nighttime and all the dust or whatever goes up and swirls around in the air, at one point it spells "sex".  In Aladdin, he says at one part, "Take off your clothes" really silently.  That's kinda... wrong/gross/sick.

Vid's referring to the infamous Rescuers incedent in which an sly animator snuck in a photo of a nude woman's torso during a shot where the albatross and mice are flying near some buildings. They are flying fast enough for the average viewer to miss the shot, but the laser disc version of the movie had to be recalled when it was discovered.

Interesting.  I knew about the one in Aladdin, and at one point I heard on the news about the Rescuers movie being recalled, but I never saw the one in the Lion King.

By the way, if Pixar left Disney, how come there is gonna be yet another Disney/Pixar movie called The Incredibles, which is coming out very soon!?

Hey! Which one of you people liked Disney's Brother Bear and the very funny Home on the Range?

Another thing, why don't we talk about Disney's and Dreamworks' live-action movies rather than just the animated ones?

I love Emperor's New Groove! It's another one of my favs. I didn't know about the thing in Aladdin. I did know about lion king thought. The part in The Lion King is so Sick/stupid. Every time I get to that part I try to ignore it because it almost ruins the whole thing!

Pixar WILL leave Disney, but they still are signed on to make two more movies: The Incredibles, which comes this November, and Cars, which doesn't come out for a while.
