Title: Who's got Paper Mario?
Post by: Super Mario on October 18, 2004, 04:27:57 AM
Hidy-ho, mammals. ...er.

So, who's got Paper Mario? I just bought it yesterday evening. I haven't played it yet, just read a bunch of reviews and now I really want to. Not very smart, I don't suppose.

Does anyone else have this game yet? What would you give it in a scale out of 10? Has anyone even *gasp* beaten it yet?

Well aren't you lucky, it has still yet to be  released where I live (UK) and it won't get released in Europe until November 12th.

I've got it.  I love it.
And now I shall avoid this thread 'til I've beaten it, lest I read something I don't want to have.

I got it. I haven't beaten it, but if it stays true to end, this will be my favorite game ever. And now I leave this thread for a long time. No spoilers, please.

Mammals? I resent that. I am clearly a . . . reptile? But my skin's too smooth. Maybe I'm an amphibian. With feathery wings?

Anyway, I have PM2, and I must say, it is the first game to make me smile whilst playing it more times per minute than any other game EVER. I'd give it an 11 out of 10.

Popple, I'm talking about the new Paper Mario game for GameCube, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

By the way I started it yesterday. I had avowed I wouldn't pour too much time into it at once and beat it too fast, but I played for 3 hours straight nonetheless.

O sweet seductive papery qualities!

Paper Mario for the Nintendo 64 was, hands-off, my favorite game--

I say "was" because from what I've seen of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, it is going to take its place.

Why don't we all discuss how far we've gotten, but not say anything that could be a spoiler?

I don't really like how in choosing to level up your Heart Points the game assumes you "lack confidence." You can only use so many Flower Points or Badges early on in the game, I would think it would be a good idea to upgrade Heart Points--I mean, going by the game's standards, you should never need to upgrade your Heart Points. Doesn't seem very plausible.

I hope that doesn't count as a spoiler.

I have

Super Mario RPG
Paper Mario
Paper Mario 2 ...

I was saying that Paper Mario 2 wasn't as good as the original, but the more I play 2 the more I like it.  I am in the tree now, but don't get much time to play since I have to share the Cube with my wife who plays The Sims B.O. all the time.

I agree, but would have put Mario & Luigi above all the games you listed.  (I haven't finish PM2 yet.)  M&L:SS is by far the best single player handheld game ever.  I think the GBA verion SMB3 w/ e-Reader cards is the best platformer ever.

My wife doesn't like Paper Mario 2.  (She has never played it.)  She says it is pornographic.  (Refering to the party member w/ breast.)  How can she say that when she is having people kiss and sleep together in The Sims?  She obviously hasn't seen any of the new video games that show girls in bikinis or topless.

Pornographic? Are you kidding me? The ESRB lable says "Everyone."

Besides that, pornographic refers to something having to do with actual intercourse, if you look up the Latin root words. I don't think Flurrie having noteable breasts is pornographic in the least.

The high level of everything in the game is astounding to behold. The symphonic and sonatic quality of the music is amazing (and I'm a musician, so I know what I'm talking about), the graphics are wonderfully colorful and the way the world folds out is one of the most beautiful displays of graphical ingenuity I've ever seen. The dialogue is funny, clever, witty--I could go on... just listening to a random Goomba in Rogueport can be hillarious. It inspired me to want to write fanfiction again. The battle system is fun, innovative, entertaining, and even dramatic enough to keep you on the edge of your seat--think... Mario's low on Heart Points, it's the enemy's turn, and you're hoping and praying that your "Close Call" badge works.

I could go on about it, but there are plenty of reviews out there who say the same things and more. Have your wife read them before you let her judge the game.

Anyway... I know this isn't the Game Help forum, but could someone explain to me how Stylish Moves work? I figured out one... what are the others? Or is that a spoiler? Will I eventually learn? If so, I'd rather wait.

By the way, I'm in Boggly Woods, too.

I agree.

Stylish Moves are all about timing with the "A" button.  For example, when you release the stick to hit with the hammer also press the "A" button at the same time.  Same thing when you release the stick to hit with the shell; press the "A" button.  Press it when you jump on something too.  Some moves require multiple presses.

I don't have a game yet, but I did see one online movie of the game where Peach takes a shower!
You can actually hear a zipping noise when she takes off her dress behind the bathtub curtains, and then she hangs her dress on the rim of the curtians...
You can even hear sum humming going too...

I don't say that this game is pornographic, but I could say that this is the first Super Mario game with a lot suggestive themes!!

I've seen a shower in her premises, so I don't doubt that.

However, I wouldn't necessarily call someone taking a shower a suggestive theme. Mario takes a shower in Marrymore in SMRPG, doesn't he?

There's a ghost taking a shower in Luigi's Mansion that appears as a curvacious young woman behind the curtain.

I love how often Mario gets called Marty or Marty-o by elders in PM:TT-YD. It's so funny.

I also noticed how in most Mario games it seems like Mario gets called ugly, but in this one he seems to be building a line of female "fans," lol.

Anyway, off to school. >.>

Punies are so awesome...

Anyone try the pit of a hundred trials yet? Just after chapter 1 I went 20 levels down. Got some neat badges.

Also, what's with the cricket thing in Hooktail Castle? I searched high and low and found nothing to do with crickets.

Parper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is one of the best Mario RPG games ever made and it's also better than Tales of Smyphonia. Playing as Bowser after the end of every chapter until chapter 7 is very exciting and hilarious. Mario is the best hero ever.

Can you give some more specific details about what makes Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door any worse than Paper Mario?

The music is littered with hints at the old Mario themes, just like Paper Mario's was. I know that I didn't find any of it boring or elevator-music'esque, so what you said about the music in your other thread was mere opinion.

You can't say the graphics sucked unless you thought Paper Mario's graphics sucked also.

Deezer put it best in the closing response to the other thread. I'm not going to say any more.

***

So, everyone who's still playing it, how far are you now? I just beat Chapter 3. Had to be one of the greatest Paper Mario-related chapters out of both games, just from the innovative style, and the fact that you're both moving up in the combatant ranks and solving a mystery at the same time.

I have to brag a little and say that the boss, whose name will not be disclosed, didn't hit me once--I counterattacked all of its attacks.

Ciao.

I just finished it a few minutes ago. For some reason, ???? is always easy to beat. (Calling him that so as not to spoil it).

I love how Yoshi still calls Mario "Gonzales." You'd think he'd notice that no one else is calling him that...

I keep reading that the whole game should take about 40 hours. But I'm already done with Chapter 4 and it's only been like, 15... oh well.

Only 15 hours so far.  Wow.  I am in chapter 5 and have over 30 hours.  I have been doing everything in the game.  Recipes, tattles, trouble, badges, leveling up, etc.  I am also reading everything and righting a lot of it down.  See my other posts for qoutes.

At first I thought Paper Mario was better than The Thousand Year Door, but the more I get into it the more I like PM2:TTYD better.

I love PM2.  My only complaint was that parts of it were too similar to the first game--I don't mean graphics or gameplay or anything like that, because I like that kind of consistency, but actual storylines.  I kept thinking "Where have I seen this before?  Oh yeah."  Still, since PM2 does it all better the second time around, that's not a real complaint.  I like/d it more than PM1 because there aren't any levels that bore me--whenever I replay the first Paper Mario, I get as far as Flower Fields and then quit because the game doesn't interest me at all beyond that point.  With PM2 I was hooked all the way through.

After 45 hours, I'm . . . not actually certain I'm done yet.  I don't just mean not having done the Pit of 100 Trials or the last few troubles on the Trouble Board either (I'll go back and do that tonight)--I mean that I actually cannot tell whether I have beaten the game or not.  A couple of things make me believe there's another (hidden?) chapter left to do, despite appearances.  I guess to say any more would be a spoiler.

Edited to fix my 60 hours to, eh, 40-45 hours.  My save slot DOES say 60 hours and that's what I was going by, but I forgot it counts the time when you have the game paused too.  If I'm in the middle of something good I tend to just pause while I go to class/out with friends/eat/etc.

Also to say that anyone who thinks this game is pornographic is, er, seriously repressed.  I was amused by Flurrie crushing the enemies with her "stage presence" though, ahaha.  Wonder if there were any Sailor Moon fans on the writing crew.

I did think some of the subplots in the game were sort of twisted for kids though.  But I love that sort of thing!

You've got my curiosity boiling, Wanwan! An eighth chapter? That's nuts!

I'm about to start Chapter 5 myself. I only have like, 20 hours. I'm doing troubles and stuff. I guess I should take more time. I always solve the puzzles pretty quickly. I had trouble getting out of the Puni cage, though, for some reason I didn't think about turning to paper.

Now I wanna' go play.

I just finished Chapter 5. Somehow I have like, 25 hours now. I messed around in Rogueport for a while.

We should discuss Badge Setup strategies. I'll try and remember mine...

I think I have 21 Badge Points, and I'm using... Quick Change (7), Flower Saver (4) x2, Spike Shield (3) and Power Bounce (3). I change them around a lot, though.

Does anyone know, are there more than enough Shine Sprite boxes for partners or are they an exact amount?

There are exactly enough.

Man... I put all but three of my levels into BP until... 'round chapter 5.  So I had tons of badge points.  The only moves I saw fit to equip were power bounce and... power hammer, is it?  Anyway, all the rest went into quick change (natch), happy flowers/hearts, damage dodges (including p) flower savers, all or nothing (wait, when'd I get that?)...
My tactics shifted slightly later on, to a point where I would try to be able to end any given battle with a signle mulitbounce.  But that required a few extra badges.

~I'm not gonna erase what you typed, Shawne, but I do have this thing against spoilers.  And while I may have already beaten the game, I don't want to ruin it for others.

You're late I just beat the game already as completed to end of the chapters, but I enjoy it! Do you know what's the final chapter and the master is? If you enter to the thousand-year door as you did good far like in Bowser's Castle. Is the "Shadow Queen" Sir Grodus was unlock and release that grave case when she comes alive. So then suddenly the Shadow Queen gonna control Princess Peach and turning into dark evil. Then she made a little destruction in the whole place in Rougeport as it was happening. So now is up to Mario and his friends of party members to save Princess Peach and the whole world. Suddenly all the 7 Crystal Stars was been together and all the people from the 7 lands of Rougeport was believe in Mario, but 7 Crystal Stars was barely talk from the citizen. That was a different voices. And the power was been together from the 7 Crystal Stars to defeat the Shadow Queen.

That said, if you want to know what was written, go ahead and hilight it, but know that it describes the very end of the game.

Ignore this post.  I had intended to see if this forum closes fonts at the end of posts.  I will let the next person see if it does.  Also, the edit line should now be the same color as the background.  Where is Watoad when you need him?  Thanks Fifth.  Now I now the font is closed.

Don't worry, Shawne.  Just remember that not everyone has beaten the game, or wants to know about it.

WanWan, it's just changing the color with HTML:

<font color="#333333">Put hidden text here</font>

And then don't forget to check the "use HTML" box.

Woo. Saturday I stayed up until 4 playing Paper Mario. I got enough Shine Sprites to double power up all my partners. Are you sure there are just enough? Because all my partners are powered up but it seems like there are more Shine Sprites to get.

I was about to ask something but I ought to post it in the game help forums...

For anyone who's finished Chapter 5... did you think it was reminiscent of Pirates of the Carribean?

******************WARNING: SPOILERS AHOY!******************

I bought the game yesterday. I've just started Ch. 7, and I must say, while the game is dowright enthralling, it gets quite a bit irksome at times:

With the exception of Ch. 3 (By far, my favorite chapter), and Ch. 6 (Which just got really annoying after a while), all the chapters are almost exactly the same, just with different backgrounds.

1: Mario finds a problem.
2: Mario travels back and forth through the same enemy-filled area, having to fight the same annoying random battles over and over.
3: Mario travels through a labyrinth, and beats a boss.

Lather, rinse, repeat. Although, something, 2 and 3 are swapped somewhat.

Although I complain about this, My file DOES have 16 hours of play on it in 2 days, which has to say SOMETHING about how good the game is. I just think that the repetitive nature of the plotline will prevent me from replaying the game 20 times like I did with SMRPG.

PS: Don't try and name your Yoshi at 1:45 AM. Heh. (Wait, actually, I like the name I gave him. I just can't spell it.)

*pointedly doesn't spoil Super Mario, heh*  But yes, there are just enough Shine Sprites.

Anyway, yes, spoilers for end of game ahead, highlight to read.

After you beat the Shadow Queen, if you go back to that same save file, you'll head back to Rogueport and meet Goombella there.  The Shadow Queen is still dead and everyone congratulates you, but you can continue to play the game and look for stuff you might have missed.  There were a few things I thought were odd about the end of the game that made me wonder whether I was really done:

1.  Bowser isn't mentioned in Goombella's end-credits roundup of what happened to everyone.  Even Grodus gets a semi-happy ending, but we never find out what happened to Bowser and Kammy.  Weird for a playable character to not get an ending sequence.

2.  The final issue of the RDM e-mail newsletter signs off with "We hope to see you again soon" followed by " . . . maybe sooner than you think, wink wink."  Um, okay?

3.  A Goomba chilling in the city underneath Rogueport tells you that you're now in the penultimate chapter of your adventure.

4.  Merluvlee's price to see my "future path" keeps going up.  When I ask her to read my fortune, she says to take care of stuff I need to do in Rogueport "first" and then gives my money back.

5.  Luigi's friend Screamy, who said he had a message to deliver and whom Goombella couldn't tell you anything about.  I find it weird that they'd design a completely new Marioverse species for one cameo character who never gets mentioned again.

Anyway, it's just idle speculation, heh.  Last night I beat the Pit of 100 Trials, finished all the troubles, and finally powered up all my characters, and it's not like anything happened then, so the game probably really is over.  But they definitely throw stuff in there to make you wonder about it, eh?

I can't believe I haven't known about the badge shop this whole time!!

32 hours into the game and I never knew it was there. I spent like, 90 coins cancelling that Garf trouble because I couldn't find his key.

I guess I never walked to the other side of the Inn... I need to be more observant.

Boy, You shouldn't realized to play any longer as you done it for few hours by now. I just did good as I can, but I was trying to concertrade to find something when they're in trouble, like detective as they've been solved!

But hey you can do best as you can to concertrated, when you'll survive as you'll never get stuck on that game, then you still have a choice!

Some of my favorites parts in the game are when you play as Bowser in SMB styled levels.  Can replay them later without starting a new file?

Hmm... interesting, WanWan...

Another thing, though not so significant:

Remember Koopook? (I think that's his name.)  You find him hiding in Hooktail's castle on one of the troubles.  Afterwards, he sends you an e-mail saying he's found a new hiding spot in a place called "Goomstar Temple."

Okay, it's quite possible that this place doesn't even exist, but still...

Good observation Fifth.  I noticed that, but didn't think of it as a possible (though unlikely) extra chapeter.

I like this game A LOT, but I got to the final boss and just can't beat it. Oh and if you don't think the game's graphics are good, try playing the original again. I had a HUGE headache afterwards.
