Title: DIC?
Post by: superstarMASIAH on January 21, 2005, 08:25:11 AM
Was the "Super Mario Bros Super Show" aired by DIC(pronounced "deek")? They are the network that made Inspector gadget, The Littles, Captain planet, and many other shows.

They aren't a network, they're an animation company.

When I was little, everyone liked Star Wars, Spiderman, Superman and Batman. The only superhero I liked was Captain Planet.

I loved that show. Now the show and I are "just friends."

Is it just me or are the Mario Cartoons badly animated even for DIC standards? A few other shows by them had horible animation, but I think they really blew it for Mario. When Peach's voice comes out of Luigi's mouth, you know somthing is wrong. I didn't notice that in the Sonic cartoons(also made by DIC)...

There are also many instances where Mario and Luigi exchange their color schemes.

Personally, I believe Mario's cartoon would've been better off if they had gone with some other animation company. In fact, in an upcoming fanfic parody I'll be doing of the show, I'll have Mario remark, "I knew I should've picked Warner Bros. to produce my animated series!" Later on, in "Misadventure of Mighty Plumber", I'll have Mario ask Luigi, "Do you ever think of how different things would've been if we didn't pick DiC to do our cartoon?" As they continue throught the episode, Mario lists off reasons why DiC isn't as awesome as they claim to be. Here are those reasons.
1. They have trouble hiring decent animators. As mentioned before, Mario's show is very badly-animated.
2. Lack of originality. How many DiC shows do you know aren't based off of an existing property? Not many, I'll tell you that. Most of the DiC cartoons I've seen include Mario and Sonic's cartoons, which, along with "Double Dragon", are based off of video games. I've also seen "Heathcliff", "Archie's Weird Mysteries" and "Sabrina - the Animated Series" (later retitled "Sabrina's Secret Life"), which are based off of comics, and "The REAL Ghostbusters", which is based on the movie. About the original thing DiC's made is "Inspector Gadget", and even he's based off of something else - "Get Smart". Plus, it doesn't help when you realize that practically every episode of Mario's first season was based off of some other story that would've been better parodied if it placed Bugs Bunny in the starring role, and in Sonic's weekday cartoon, they overused the mind control plot to the point that it wasn't funny anymore.
3. Horrible anme dubbing. I don't like it when anime fans treat 4Kids like they're the worst anime dubbers ever. A good reason is because DiC does an even worse job of dubbing anime. Remember what they did to "Sailor Moon"? They practically chopped that show in half! The thing they have going for them here is the fact that they allowed Funimation to release the unedited version on DVD. And on the subject of changing things, that brings up the next reason.
5. Inability to be true to source material. Take a look at Mario's show, for instance. Of course, seeing how Mario and Luigi did use to have pants that matched their hats, they themselves are exempt from the search, but what about Bowser? He looks nothing like he should in the cartoon, and it really gets confusing in the second and third seasons, where his kids look as they do in the games but he doesn't. And how about Sonic's show? Sure, his Saturday morning show was awesome, and his weekday show at least had a lot of humor, but his third DiC incarnation has him traveling with his siblings who didn't exist in the games, singing bad songs like as though they've got their show confused with "Alvin and the Chipmunks". And poor Heathcliff! Not only does his kid master look completely different in the show, but the animated Heathcliff talks, something I don't recall him doing in the comic strip. And just look at this picture of the animated GhostBusters, who look nothing like the actors who played them in the movie, by the way:
Matter of fact, the only character who looks the same in both the movie and the show is Slimer. And yet they call the show "The REAL GhostBusters" with an emphasis on "real". (Apparently, it's to avoid confusion with the OTHER GhostBusters cartoon, the Filmation one.)
6. False ownership claims. As if's not enough that DiC makes up stuff about the properties they turn into cartoons, they also seem to act like they made them. How do I know? Watch the SMB Super Show credits sometime, and you'll notice that not once do they mention Shigeru Miyamoto for creating the Marios. Same thing with Yuji Naka for Sonic. And while I haven't seen "Heathcluff" in a while, I'll bet they didn't give credit to George Gately for creating the character. Sheesh! Even the SMB Movie gave credit to the creator of the source material!
So there you have it. Mario really should've picked Warner Bros. to do his cartoon.

I agree with you about all that. However one thing that Dic did do right was to throw the music and sfx from the games right into AoSMB3 and SMW. I always get this wonderful nostalgic feeling whenever I hear the music mixed into the scenes, and I wonder if WB would have bothered to do that. Sure, call it plain laziness in avoiding original music but I love it a ton. I wish Sonic X had more music from the games.

The guy in the right of that picture reminds me of Angelina Jolie from Life or Something Like It.

Yeah, and Don Adams even did the voice. It was all intentional, ok? Inspector Gadget was actually good.

I liked a lot of DiC's shows.
The first one I remember seeing regularly was Inspector Gadget.
I also liked the first Sonic series. The one that was on ABC on Saturday Mornings was the 2nd series, and was a bit more serious. I don't remember watching that a lot, but I do remember watching it.
I also have a few of the SMW and SMB3 cartoons on tape. Stinks that both shows only had 13 episodes, though...Weird that they came out to be an odd number, or maybe I am just missing something...

Unless I'm mistaken, 13 is the minimum number of episodes a show can have to qualify as a "season". Or something.

But each episode was 10-15 minutes in length.
So, what did they do after the 13th episode?

Okay first of all, if you look carefully at the number of episodes from each mario show, they are all divisible by 13.
Secondly, please stop bad-talking these cartoons, I thought they were excellent. Sure you don't appreciate them as much now, but when I was a kid I couldn't miss a single episode...I just couldn't, and there's a few that I wanna see again, but they're hard to find.
So far I've downloaded - (SMBSS) Mario's Magic Carpet, Mario and the Beanstalk, and Mario Meets Koopzilla, (TAOSMB3) Never Koop a Koopa, Toddler Terrors of Time Travel, Tag Team Trouble, Kootie Pie Rocks, The Ugly Mermaid, 7 Continents for 7 Koopas, and Do the Koopa, (SMWS) The Night Before Cave Christmas, Born to Ride, Party Line, and A Little Learning.
A decent portion of the selection on P2P servers come in parts, I don't want them in parts, because you can't keep track, so I try to find whole episodes. I have a few that are awaiting sources, but we will see in a few days.
All in all, these cartoons are FANTASTIC!

I didn't bad talk them, I thought SMW, SMB3, Inspector Gadget, and Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog pwned.
When I meant by "Why is it odd?", I meant, each show contains two episodes. 13 episodes comes out in an odd number. They can air one episode for the first half of the show, but what would they do for the second half?
Were they aired along with some other show, and when syndicated on PAX, they put them together? I have them on tape because I was one of the lucky people who had it on in my area. When they were on PAX, they aired two episodes in each show.
...Yeah, if I continued to try and explain, my head would explode.

That was so great. I had no idea they were on that channel until I accidently discovered them. As soon as I found out I got extremely excited and tried to watch the shows every time they aired, rerun or no. Even if it meant waking up early. Now I miss those shows so much it isn't funny. And I wish I could have seen the old Sonic cartoons too, because I only saw one episode and it reeked with stupidity (Sonic's Christmas Blast).
Toddathon: You should download "Misadventures of Babysitting" and "Super Koopa" of TAoSMB3. I got them both on one tape several years ago and still enjoy the crazy plots and goofy music (my super duper "Ka-a-rubi"! Yeah!). And speaking of that hopefully Deezer will put up the scans I sent him of my three Mario videos.

I HAVE THAT TAPE TOO!
I found that tape at my convenience store it included misadventures in babysitting and super koopa, and I must've watched it like daily when i first got it, yes the music was awesome! Even though i have them on tape, i wanna add them to my computer collection...but i couldn't find super koopa, and misadventures in babysitting isn't downloading.

Super Koopa was the best episode of the SMB3 show. I brought back Bowser's power pendant for one of my stories on here.
I''ve found that if you have a goal, you might not make it. But if you don''t have one, you''re never disappointed. Let me tell you, it feels phenomenal!
