I confused about this!
Many people called this Birdo
but
If you beat a game, and watch a ending screen it says it is ostro!
-
They mixed up the names. It's Birdo.
-
i hate birdo
-
Before I had found out Birdo was his/her real name, I always thought Ostro was a more suitable name for an egg-shooting dinosaur just as Birdo was for the running-bird creature.
''I am feeling fat, and sassy!''
-
Birdo has always been a she, ne89.
-
until now, i've always been confused about birdo's gender
-
In Japan.
-
In Japan, Birdo has always been known as Catherine so I guess it is NOA's fault as to the confusion about Birdo's gender.
The definition of mixed emotions - Watching your mother-in-law drive off a cliff in your new car.
-
I completley agree with ledzeplinrocks on not knowing what gender birdo is
my fat is better than yours
-
I think Catherine's a better name for her, if only to confirm gender and not cause confusion between Birdo and Ostro. In the manual for Wario's Woods, her name was Catherine.
I would like Birdo if Nintendo hadn't included that embarrassing voice in Mario Tennis (and any future game with her in it). But strangely, it does seem to fit that Yoshi and Birdo would be tennis partners. Maybe it's that they both have big beaks.
-
Beaks? That's the last thing I would call them. Yoshi has a snout, and Birdo has.. a egg-shooter suctionish type thing. Yeah. Suctionish IS a word. I swear.
I hope.
I pray.
If a tree falls in the woods, do all the others laugh at it?
-
Birdo was originally a girl in Japan, but for some reason they changed her to a boy in America. But later on they changed her back to a girl (and I'm glad, let me tell you).
I also think that Catherine would have been a good name for her in America.
-
I like to go by how Japan did it and consider that Birdo was always a girl...
I don't think I worded that correctly.
-
they originally posted the idea for Birdo to be a guy who "thinks its a girl and prefers to be called Birdetta", but with all the homophobia over here in North America, they scrapped that idea and turned her into a girl. tsk tsk.

Actually, because of the name mix-up, Birdo being a "guy" just can't be believed at all.
That was just a simple assumption back when she was a newbie anyways.
Bottom line: instruction manuals suck. For any game, they're often full of crap, weak, and incorrect on many things. Don't trust them.
-
Bottomline: You just bumped a 2 year old topic.
-
Yeah, I'm so not-hardcore now because of having something to say about something. Search function, anyone?
Bottom line: You posted just to say that.
-
GAH! It's not a bump if the person contributes to the topic, which BooDestroyer did do.

I think they've been getting better over time.
-
I think they're worse now.
The artwork usually stinks compared to the old ones, and most of the time the game contains a tutorial that's actually more informative than the manual itself. It's even worse if the manual is in black n' white.
-
Perhaps that's because no one reads the manuals. But this is a catch-22 in that if gamers do not read the manual, the publishers don't feel motivated to make the manual good, which causes less people to read it. But I've already brought up this issue. (http://themushroomkingdom.net/board/index.php?topic=9811.0)

Yeah, I did. Mabey I should just shut up about bumping, because obviously my definition of bumping is way different than your's Max, and in my opinion, he could have said that without bumping up a 2 year old topic.
-
Just so you know, I use the definition in the rules (http://themushroomkingdom.net/board/index.php?topic=8638.0).
No bumping for the sake of bumping. Bumping is posting in an inactive thread for the sole purpose of moving it to the top of the list.
-
Oh, so that means I can go bring up some old topics now? That's great! <sarcasm>
I'm just going to stop complaining about it. I mean, there' not much I can do about it, and rules are rules, so whatever.
Anyway, Birdo is a girl. I am sick of people telling me she's a transexual or whatever it's called.
-
A Japanese individual sent this to us last year, but we haven't gotten around to adding it to the site:
It's stated in your interesting website that Birdo is female, but it's
a common sense among Japanese Mario fans that Catherine is a male. I
think it'd be nice if you add some information about that on your
website, like what you did for Vivian. I was surprised to read that
he's now female in the English versions....
For reference, have you read the description for the Catherine trophy
in SSBM in Japanese mode (which is written by that computer-game-savvy
Mr. Sakurai himself)? It says "Jibun wo onna-no-ko da to 'omoi-konde'
ori", which roughly means "Catherine 'erroneously' thinks him/herself a
girl". "Omoi-komu" technically means just "to believe", but this word
tends to be used to indicate suggestively that the belief is wrong. In
this context the word is in quotation marks, so it is clear for native
speakers that it is being used in that sense.
The SMB2US manual was directly translated into Japanese for SMUSA, including the Birdo quote; so, in fact, it can be very important what goes into those things, jokingly or not.
-
The real question is: are WE Japanese?
-
No, but they are. I like the while "tranny" thing. It makes the Mario universe seem a little more "out there".
-
Prince Peasley sure is something of that nature.
-
Nah, Peasly is what the Japanese would call a bishoujo. Which is known to us as a "prettyboy".
-
Ugh, I hate prettyboys. Yeah, some have a fighting nature, but all of them are just too wimpy to me.
-
No that's bishounen.

No, bishoujo means "pretty girl". You're calling Peasly a woman, heh.
-
I originally thought Birdo was a boy until SMAS, when the bow was added (although the bow is missing in the cast roll at the end).
-
I never really cared. I was a little kid who was like "omg monster I kill you?" When I first saw the bow on the head, don't know when it was... I didn't even think it any different, like I'd known she was she all the time.

People should be like this about video games more often.

Whoops. Got them confused.

You're boring.

I agree, of course, when you're young, that sort of thing usually doesn't enter your mind.
