Title: The Green Mystery
Post by: javis_rose on October 12, 2005, 09:05:15 PM
It if commonly accepted that Luigi is not in the original version of the Nintendo classic, Super Mario 64.  But there are many questions left un-answered.

The first, and perhaps smoking gun of the Green Mystery, is the statement that Nintendo didn't have enough time to develop him.  Many people believe that that is that, and he is not in the game.  Maybe so, but does that statement not leave you with one knawing question?  How come Nintendo had the time to create a Yoshi render and not a Luigi one?  Luigi is Mario's flesh and blood brother.  There are die-hard Luigi fans from back in the 80's.  Surly Luigi would have been easier to create.

In most of the previous games, he was nothing more or less than a copy of Mario's sprites with a green color filter affect.  For a company that didn't have much time left, Nintendo had enough of it to create a complex 3D Dinosaur render of a character that was popular, but still relatively new at the time, and not enough time to create a character that is simply a color filter and has had fans sense the old-school days?  That sounds pretty inconsistent to me.

Then there is the Star in the Court Yard.  It clearly begins with the letter, "L."  I think I also see the hiragana for, "mi," on the right.  Mi starts out mimasu which means to look/see.  So perhaps it is a secret message to see Luigi after all.  For the first major Mario games in years to not have his brother, and to be left alone with a Star Grave-Marker.  Does this not strike anyone as strange?

There are countless things in Super Mario 64 that have no logical explanation.  They are simply random objects in the world.  The Twin Star Doors in the Cave and the poison box on the ship.

Is Luigi is Super Mario 64?  Why not?  Do you people recall the third eye on the back of Daisy’s head in Super Smash Brothers Melee?  That was likely not random accident.  Likely, a programmer thought it would be entertaining to put it there and see if anyone found it.  To realize the Luigi would likely be nothing more than a green, "L," graphic and a color swap, I see no reason why he couldn't have been slipped in; possibly even without the heads of Nintendo knowing.  The Green Mystery lives on.  Is Luigi in the game?  And will we ever know?

I would agree that Luigi could be hidden in the vast code of SM64, but I firmly believe that he is hidden to the point where viewing a render would be literally impossible.

Bird Person is going to kill you, anyways Luigi can't be in SM64. Did you see the last post trying to prove that? It wasn't very good proof, so these are justc decievers that want to make you chase one crazy dream ......... forever ........

Oh man, I'm getting shivers up my spines again. Any weird rumors just give me a shiver. Woah!! There it goes agian.
Okay, that is some good points, but there is one thing that breaks the ice, and that's the star in the courtyard. The symbols could mean anything. L is real, yadadada... And on that Yoshi thing, that is a good point, but isn't Luigi a second fiddle?

I'm sorry to all those Luigi-fans, but luigi wasn't that popular until, maybe, he got his facial changes (i.e, long head, taller appearance...), and that's when Luigi seemed more then just a green mario. Bub that was around 1997 or sometying like that. SM64 was made in 1996. And Nintendo decided to show Mario's closest companion, Yoshi, and they wanted to see how how far they could use the character. And wasn't it great to see that Yoshi just waddlin' around? They never showed Yoshi that great until Super Mario Sunshine. I think Mario and Luigi should have their own games. Mario and Luigi would be great in the same adventure game if we had a little co-op. (c'mon, Splinter Cell-style partnership) So, unless Nintendo pulls something out of their sleeves (or kimonos), you're gonna see Mario and Luigi less together in the same adventure game.

I''''m not always who I am but I am what I say I am!

He's not in the game.
The statue has a squigly texture on it. If it said anything at all, I'm sure it would be in japanese.
The Yoshi model could have been made any time during the game's production. They could have run out of time before they even started on luigi.
I don't know for sure, but it seems that there would be a way to look at all the textures and whatnot in the game, with some kind of cheating device. If Luigi was in it, I think someone would at least find the "L" sign in there somewhere.
And anyway somebody would have figured it out a very long time ago if he were unlockable.
This is the sort of rumor that would make sense a month after the game's release. Ater eight years, it's pretty much dead.

And Luigi became taller and thinner in SMB2. That was WAY before super Mario 64.

HEY THERE!!!
Well, I believe that the statue there says L is real 2041. And I believe that means that at the point of SM64's development, he was intended to be unlockable. And that was a hint to the cheat to get him. Now...
YOU DIE! Er, I mean... He's not in the game. I tried all the cheats on the internet I've come across and all are crap.
I've seen it all: the "121st star," and "door behind the waterfall," they're all crap. However, I suggest glitches such as "flying corpse," "instant roof death," and "trpped in a crazy room." I think all of them are on TMK.

Why do they give electric toothbrushes names like there are different models? They''re not cars!

The graveyard sign seems to say "L is Real 2001"

Which obviously meant that the mario team was planning to make a game about luigi in 2001.

We get another hint towards this in Paper Mario, when we read Luigi's diary and it says that Luigi wants to go on an adventure of his own. It also says that Luigi is afraid of ghosts.

If you have been to the Mario Fan Games Galaxy site, you'll see that has already been made.

Luigi is NOT in the game. Give it up people. It's dead. The Horse is dead. Let it Rest in peace.

Or go play Super Mario 64 DS.

I didn't know I had a reputation for busting people who started threads like this. That makes me feel so proud.

In the next Paper Mario game, it would be cool if Luigi ended up an optional partner like Ms. Mowz.

Yeah, and what if the game had tons of tons of choices for who could be your partners, but only a few could join at a time.  That would be a tough work for the makers but great for us.  I would take Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Geno, Vivian, and a Piranha Bot (a plant in a robot suit that fires bob-ombs and chain chomps).

I always feel bad when new people try to make a topic about an innocent question and then they're shoved down a warp pipe.  They probably don't know that the question has been repeated a marillion times and the answer to it isn't hard to find, but still.  I'm not saying everyone is rude though and maybe I'm just adding emotions to things that aren't  really drastic.  R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

Edit- I hate being the first post on the second page!  D'oh!

Miyamoto himself explained that Luigi wasn't in the game. Any pics are screen shots with Luigi in them are a 100%, load of.........fibbing. Okay, so he's not in SM64. He should have. Could have. But wasn't.

I''m-a Luigi! Number-a one!

The best solution is to play SSB (N64), unlock Luigi, and look at his profile in Data.

Luigi was never in Super Mario 64.  This is why it's called Super Mario 64 instead of Super Mario Bros. 64.  The "L is real 2041" is nothing more than programmer graffiti and has no meaning whatsoever to the game.  It's probably just an inside joke for the programmers who wrote the programming code.  Super Mario 64 has been out for seven years now.  If there were any real secrets hidden in the game, I think they would have been found by now.

You know what? Luigi is in SM64. I just don't know why he is shorter, fatter, and why he dresses like Mario. I also don't know why he changed the look of his moustache.

You'd go a bit loopy if you were stuck with a huge monster until some plumber collects eighty stars, I'm sure.

I''''ve noticed something amongst some people''''s signatures- they''''re not always perfektt.

That's enough time to develop him as a character with a meaningful role in the game.  Not just design his polygons.
