If the game is working normal again, I wouldn't worry about it.

That's happened to mine before. It just does that. It's neat.

something really cool but probably horribly dangerous to do is to slowly take out the left side of the cartridge when the game is on, and the sound with get glitchy, Mario will move around on the ground like a skateboard, and when he jumps, it looks like his dismembered parts are flailing about in some strange mass of Mario!

Doubt it. Sounds like the cart was just dirty or something.
