Welcome to the first-ever Fungi Forum Sportscenter! I need stats for sports, sports news, and anyone who is willing to help this place stay updated, so please help! Anyone is welcome to post sports news, so...THIS IS SPORTSCENTER: FUNGI FORUM EDITION.
-
You all used to spit on the Seahawks, but now they're showing they rest of the country what it means to lose. They have an excellent chance of making the Superbowl, and I wouldn't be surprised if they win. Go Seattle!
Okay. That's about as excited as I can get about football. Many of the guys in my house are really, really into it, and some of them will probably go to the Superbowl if the Hawks make it. Football is always on at my house in Seattle, but I watch only if I happen to be walking by. I still don't understand most of the stuff they say as they watch and shout at the TVs.
-
Why does the FF's barely have any football fans?!?! No sports fans too.
Go Steelers!!!!
-
Its-a time for an update!
-
I am an NBA or MLB fan. I'm not to big on football, mostly because the Browns are not very good.
-
You're a Browns fan? Sorry, but I'm a Steelers fan!!! Haha!
-
Come on Cowboys! They have to make the play-offs.
-
I was once a Cowboys fan. And a Bucs fan. But now, forever more, a Steelers fan!!!!
-
Time for another update! *SGC2C music enters and jams for a little bit*
-
Ya, see, the Bears have Rex Grossman at QB now, so they are OBVIOUSLY going to the Super Bowl. OBVIOUSLY </sarcasm>
I follow Chicago, and all I hear about them is that this quarterback change is going to be a massive world of amazingness. Everywhere.
-
Most of the good teams have been losing, such as the Colts, the Bengals, the Giants, etc. This just gives Pittsburgh an advantage!!! :D
-
Lets not forget the Cowboys! Almost there guys.....
-

Well, "Da Bears" have an improved offense with Grossman at QB. Unfortunately, I don't see them winning one playoff game, especially if they end up playing the Seahawks.
-
I'm a Dolphins fan, but I'm from the St. Louis Metro East Area. (not E. St. Louis) I still spit on the Seahawks. The dolphins were undefeated in 1972.
-
You're a Browns fan? Sorry, but I'm a Steelers fan!!! Haha!
The Steelers are from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
-
The Bears won't play Seattle until the NFC championship, seeing how Seattle clinched the #1 seed and Chicago clinched the #2 seed.
-
I know the Bears have a first-round bye, but will it be Seahawks vs. Bears for sure?
-
I hope the Bears make it to the champeenship... They deserve to go, for once.. whereas the Packers will get a pretty good draft pick next year, which is really all i'm concerned about... other than the fact that those stupid Vikings and Eagles didn't make it. Everyone says Brett Favre should retire, but I don't think he's done yet. It's going to be Indy and Seattle in the 'Bowl, and I hope Seattle wins it.
-
No. It will be the Steelers in the Bowl. :D
-
I've-a updated!
-
I bleed Purple and Gold. Unfortunately, my team's life force was shattered thanks to those blasted Baltimore Ravens! That's the second time in three years that losing to a team with a sub 500 record has cost them a playoff spot.
We should make this the Sportscenter of the forum.
-
Tell me how to change the titlle, and I will make this the Fungi Forum Sportscenter.
-
Edit your first post and change the title while you're doing it.
Go Vikings...uh, next year.
-
Ew... Vikings.
-
Exactly. The Steelers stopped them w/o blowing up from their cooach and the Steelers beat the Bears. 2 winning teams lost their win streaks, the Steelers ended their losing streak. Woohoo!
-
SO now this isn't only about NFL, we can use it for other fun sports too?
-
Well, I guess. Yes you may! :D
-
Ew... Steelers.
-
Ew, smells like Nirvana Kid, who's gone. Steelers are definitely in the playoffs!!! :D :D :D
-
Yay Vikings. No more annoying Randy Moss.
EDIT: Green Bay can go burn....burn....BURN!!! Cheese people.
-
you know who can burn?...
..uh, Vikings and Broncos supporters.
-
Okay, let's face it. The Cowboys are goin' to the Super Bowl and kickin' some serious booty. Say hello to the new 2006 NFL champs!
-
The Miami Dolphins were undefeated in '72.
-
Okay, PL. Hello, Steelers!!!!!! XD Yes, no more Randy Tree Moss. He better put a belt on while in Oakland, or my fav. defense guy, Warren Sapp, will masacre him.
-
The Steelers? Muwahahahahah! Let's watch the Cowboys beat 'em in the Bowl 42-0! Okay, let's face it. The 'Boys will be lucky if they even make the playoffs. But I hope they'll do it anyway.
-
Let's watch NFL in 1972. It would be better.
-
LD a Vikings fan...I never thought of that...Or is he being sarcastic? You never can tell with the Lizard.
-
I can tell you one thing... the Browns aren't going to win the Super Bowl. Gosh, I hate the Ravens. I hate Art Modell. The Browns could have been so good! But.. NOOOO... we have to MOVE them. Then they bring back this joke of a team. Psh.
-
Yep, I like the Vikes, but only because I was brainwashed as a small child.
-
I can tell you one thing... the Browns aren't going to win the Super Bowl. Gosh, I hate the Ravens. I hate Art Modell. The Browns could have been so good! But.. NOOOO... we have to MOVE them. Then they bring back this joke of a team. Psh.
Yeah, they weren't even that great with Kellen Winslow Jr. on their team. Don't worry, it'll just take some rebuilding to resurface the Browns. But not as much rebuilding as Detroit. When a guy running around the stadium with a sign saying "Fire Millen" gets louder cheers than on field performance, you know you have problems. Joey Harrington either needs to seriously step it up, or the Lions need a new QB. I personally think it's going to be Seattle vs Indy in the Super Bowl, but anything can happen.
Yep, I like the Vikes, but only because I was brainwashed as a small child.
Brainwashed? How was that? I have been a Vikings fan since about 1997, when I seriously started watching football.
Big games coming up in week 17. Can Kerry Collins and the Raiders play the spoiler to the Giants' postseason hopes? And can Washington shut the door on Dallas' postseason hopes with a victory against the Eagles? Find out
today, actually. yes, it is officially 2006. This has been Sportscenter, the Fungi Forum report, for now.
Boy, I never thought so many people on here liked the Vikings.
-
Well my dad really really likes them and I grew up in that environment and just kind of adopted the same views.
-
Wow! The Browns won, but we'll have to wait until next year. :(
-
An update on the NFL Sunday games:
Houston loses (but really wins) the Reggie Bush Bowl 17-20 to the San Fran 49ers. They will get the number one pick in the 2006 NFL draft.
The rout was on in KC as the Chiefs beat Cincy, who were resting many of their starters. 37-3 was the final in Dick Vermeil's final game as an NFL coach. he announced his retirement earlier in the week.
The same happened in Minnesota as the Vikings beat around the Bears' fourth and fifth teamers 34-10. Even though they missed the playoffs, the Vikings turned the corner with a 7-2 record over the last nine games. Perhaps a turnaround is in the Vikings' immediate future...
It was Pittsburgh holding off the Lions 35-21. Jerome bettis rushed for three TDs in what may be his last game as a Steeler, and maybe of his career. Boy, a lot of these guys that I've grown up watching are leaving. Favre, Bettis, Vermeil, maybe Brad Johnson too.
Jacksonville really hammered Tennesee. if anyone knows the final score on that one, tell me.
Washington trailed 17-7, but rallied back to beat Philly 31-20 to lock up their first playoff trip since 99.
And those are all the important games, so I'm done.
-
How about Dion Sander's last game, eh?
-
And how about how the Packers toppled the oh-so-overrated 'Hawks 23-17? Which, I suppose, is bad, because this means the Packers don't get quite as good a draft pick next year.
Breaking news: Mike Tice has been fired. Good riddance.
-
Oh wait, I thought I covered GB already. Being a Minnesotan, I'm not very fond of the packers, but I still felt good for Brett to go out and win possibly his last game 23-17 as the Pack had it under control for most of the game. They came out and played arguably their most consistent game since they beat the Falcons back in November.
Edit: Cleveland beat Baltimore 20-16. After trailing 16-6, the Browns made a second half surge to halt Baltimore's two game winning streak. Deion Sanders played possibly his last game for the Ravens.
-
I'm a Bears man. They used to stink, but they're on a roll this year. And the Packers are seriously over-glorified.
-
The Vikes beat Chicago yesterday, but that's because they were resting all their good players for the playoffs.
I am now taking predictions for the Rose Bowl. I won't see it, because I have commitments on that night. Who will win: Texas or USC?
-
Sometime next year...In the great tradition of college bowl games, there have been many great games that have been played. But you've never seen anything like this before! Airing only on FFSN (Fungi Forum Sports Network, the same network that airs SSB Live) next December 31st, join Mario and Luigi as they lead the Golden Mushroom University Toads against Bowser and the King Koopa State Spike Shelled Koopas! Featuring different Nintendo characters on both sides of the ball, don't miss kickoff at 6:00C/P next New Years Eve!
-
Crap! I killed another topic!
-
This is a FFSC special report:
The Penn State Nittany Lions have won the 2006 FedEx Orange Bowl over the Florida State Seminoles.
26-23 was the final. This game had it all. Missed opportunities, great defense, and a stretch in the third quarter where neither team could muster even a first down until Penn State did it with 1:14 left on a defensive penalty.
Both teams played their hearts out, with a few FSU players suffering cramps and dehydration late in the third overtime. That's right, third OT. Penn State scored first, FSU answered with 13 straight, PSU scored a TD and went up by one at the half. After a scoreless third, PSU got a safety early in the final quarter. This gave them a 3 point lead, but they turned the ball over on a fumble, and FSU went down for a tying field goal. PSU had a chance to win it, but their freshman kicker Kevin Kelly missed from 29 yards out, and we went to OT. In the first OT, both kickers missed field goals as Kelly blew another game winner. In the second OT, both teams scored TDs. And in the third, after a FSU miss, Kevin Kelly redeemed himself. To sound cliche, the third time was the charm as PSU won by the final score of 26-23. Easily the best BCS game I've seen in a long time.
And that's the Sportscenter report. Someone else post results from the Rose Bowl, because I won't be here.
-
What about the Fiesta Bowl?! THat was an amazing game, two of my favorite teams put face to face! Wow!
-
Yeah, that was a great game.
This is yet another FFSC special report!
The Texas Longhorns have pulled off the shocking upset over USC, the #1 team in the nation for the national championship! I will post the details of the game when I have time, but for now, Texas 41 USC 38. An instant classic for the most prestigous prize in college football.
-
Dudes, I can't cover every single game (partially because I don't have ESPN.) if any of you other guys saw a game and care to post it here, by all means go ahead. I'm not the only sports reporter around here.
-
I would, if I had the time. I will do it on the weekends.
-
Okay, I'm from Texas and I was rooting for the Longhorns. Say hello to the best team in the nation, fellas.
-
Hellooo, Fiesta Bowl champions, the Ohio State BUCKEYES!!!! And USC lost! XD.
-
I am so very happy that USC lost. I can not controll my excitement. What was it, a 40 some game winning streak? BROKEN?! YEAH!
-
I wanted USC to win. Texas is too... full of themselves. That said, Green Bay should draft Vince Young. Yes, I know, I just said i didn't like Texas, but that doesn't mean the quarterback isn't any good.
-
I saw just the first half of the Washington-Tampa Bay game. Who won that one?
-
The Washington Redskins.
-
Who's gonna win the game right now? STEELERS!!!! And whoever can give me NBA and NHL stats 1st can be my co-hosts. The first co-host will be the one who gives me the formula to striked-through text.
-
What a game. After a wonderfull opening half effort by the Bengals, the Steelers came back to win. There were a large ammount of injuries this game.
Probably the most impressive play was the good ol flea flicker- type play. The fake run- turn pass by the Steelers was a testiment to a great team. Unfortunately, it had to be the Steelers to pull off such a play. Next week the Colts will take care of the Steelers for sure.
-
Yeah right. We'll get Payton even worse. Muwahahahaha! The whole incident was still an accident. The guy fell on him, and Carson couldn't do anything. Henry was so scared that he automatically got injured. Carson, BTW, has a torn ACL and MCL.
-
Deezer's unscientific picks for NFL divisional playoffs:
Saturday
Washington at Seattle
New England at Denver
Sunday
Pittsburgh at Indianapolis
Carolina at Chicago
-
I strongly agree. While we're at it:
AFC Divisonal Title
Indianapolis and New England
NFC Divisional Title
Carolina and Seattle
Super Bowl
Seattle and Indianapolis
I put "and" instead of "at" because I don't know which fields they're going to play at. Besides the Super Bowl, which I believe is in Detroit.
-
I don't know, I kind of like Chicago ovr carolina, and I think that the Steelers will be out for revenge after getting their butts kicked on MNF earlier in the year.
-
Well, now that Cinn. is out, I have to root for the Colts. Come on, Colts! Let's go! WOOT! *takes off t-shirt.*
-
The Steelers are favored over the Colts!!!!!!! WWWOOOOOHHHOOOOooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *breathes heavily, coughs* Yeah. Go Steelers, woohoo.
My Picks-
The Panthers over the Bears, the Steelers over the Colts, the Broncos over the Patriots, and for my upset pick: the Redskins over the Seahawks.
-
While I don't care at all about football, nor do I understand I'll say "Go Redskins, Panthers, and Seahawks!"
Redskins because my dad's a major fan, I like Joe Gibbs, and considering the team's in my birth-city...yeah. Panthers because apparently I'm supposed to root for the team near me. Seahawks because they've been the underdog, Seattle is awesome, and my best friend's family are major fans. I'd also root for the Rams, my "mom's team," but they're not doing very well from the stats, so...meh.
I've been "raised" to hate the Cowboys. Even though I know almost nothing about them, they've seemed like poor winners. Their attitudes and cheerleaders really bug me for some reason, from what I've seen and heard. A lot of teams probably fit that, though. Or maybe just individuals. *Shrugs*
Um, yeah, anyway, I really don't care about football. The only time I've ever really paid any attention to it was during the Superbowl, and only during the commercials. I have an extremely short attention span when I see football on. It's even worse when I'm forced to go to any of my brother's games, since I can't leave and go do something else. XD
-
I don't know much of the details, but apparently, Carson Palmer's injury is more severe than originally thought. Which means he may be out for a lot longer than originally intended. Also, Daunte Culpepper is working on his rehab assignment, and it will take anywhere from 4-6 months or longer for him to come back. In other Vikings news, new head coach Brad Childress has replaced nearly all the assistant coaches that he fired last week. among the new signees are Darrel Beville, the former QB coach of the Packers. And a man named Tomlinson, the former DB coach of the Bucs.
Hey, this gives me an idea. We should all report on our specific favorite teams individually. I'll do sports updates on the Minnesota sports teams, and so on and so forth.
-
I've been "raised" to hate the Cowboys.
Good.
-
I need to update stats. Please help, as I need striked-through text! And the co-host jobs are still awaiting.
-
erm..
you mean this?
-
Yes! What's the formula, possible co-host?
-
¬_¬ (http://themushroomkingdom.net/board/Themes/ff/help/posting.english.html#bbcref)
[s]you mean this?[/s]
-
Thank you, Sapph! If you'd like, you can be my 1st co-host! ;D
-
Um...no thanks. I hate sports.
-
The only sport I like is baseball and track.
Football and basketball.
-
Why must all girls hate sports?!?! Well, there goes another one...*sigh* Who wants cookie cake?
-
Sorry for the dp, but here's a very special announcement from my desk: Ahem...
STEELERS WON! STEELERS WON! STEELERS WON! WOOOOHOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
That is all.
-
Grrr.
I'm in the middle of the OSU/MSU basketball game that is in OVERTIME.
I'm also trying to watch the Chicago/Carolina Football game. I feel bad for Chicago. It is the one time in my life I actually want a Chicago team to win. But then again, I need Seatle to win next week, because they are the only ones who can stop the Steelers.
-
STEELERS SMOKED PEYTON AND COLTS!!!!! Ohhh yeeaaaahhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I couldn't believe the end of that game. We had won, it was 1st and goal, and The Bus, THE BUS, fumbles?!?!?!?! I had jsut celebrated big time and then he fumbles?!?!?!?!?!?!?! But, Roethlisberger saves the day! Then, for a chance in OT, Mike Vanderjagt actually chokes and misses the GW field goal!!!!!! Could I be any more happy?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
-
I suppose this is why I don't bet on games... =/
-
I bet most thought the Steelers would get smoked, but wasn't it the opposite?!?!?!? HAhahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
-
So, ya, both of the NFL teams I follow lost today. At home. Both of them.
I have no reason to watch football anymore. I never DID have a reason to watch basketball, so... ya. I guess I'll be hitting the WSOP reruns on ESPN again.
*sigh*
-
I'm still celebrating today, as the Steelers beating the No. 1 Colts AT HOME IS THE BIGGEST NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the first time a No. 6 seed has went to the Championship Game, along with beating a No. 1 seed!!!!!!!!!!!
-
So the bracket for the playoffs is now, beyond most peoples' belief,
AFC: Broncos vs Steelers
NFC: Panthers vs Seahawks
I must admit, Pitt surprised me with their ability to absolutely dominate, and they should have had the game won when Polamalu picked off that last pass. But of course, it was overturned, Indy scored again, and we had ourselves a ballgame. Bettis fumbles, Peyton gets one last shot, but the most accurate kicker in the game today misses a 46 yard field goal. dramatic ballgame indeed.
-
I was going to faint when the Bus, who never fumbles, fumbled! That Indy guy was running, and I thought it was all over, but Roethlisberger, yes "Roethlisberger", tackled him! Then Vanderjagt misses! He has never missed at that field! WOOOHOOO!!!!!!!! :D :D :D ;D ;D ;D
BTW, I'm erasing all teams who are not in the playoffs right now! :P
-
Announcer: Stay tuned for the ever-popular Pummel GiftedGirl event!
Me: Owowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowow.... owowowowOWowowowOWOWOWowowow...
-
the most accurate kicker in the game today misses a 46 yard field goal.
I blame, 100%, the stat-keeper for the network that braodcasted the game for this missed field goal. Right before the kick, the network displayed a graphic boldly proclaiming that "MIKE VANDERJAGT HAS NOT MISSED A FIELD GOAL AT HOME ALL YEAR". As soon as I saw that, I KNEW the field goal wasn't going in. I knew it. Sure enough, he missed by the width of a goalpost.
EVERY SINGLE TIME someone points out some streak like this, no matter what sporting event it is placed on, the streak will end on the next occurence of the event in question. A great example is free throws in a basketball game -- note the alarming frequency that the next free throw attempt is missed when someone points out that "This team has yet to miss a free throw all game. They are 16/16 for th--- oh, wait, never mind."
Ya. General reaction at Purdue was a rather stunned silence. I was a bit more unnerved at how easily Steve Smith ran over "the best defense in the NFC" yesterday. Really. I grew up in northwest Indiana, closer to Chicago than Indianapolis.
On a note that is almost as bad, Denver beat New England, so now I have to listen to Woody Paige boast about how awesome Denver is for the next millenium. I really, really loathe Woody Paige.
Needless to say, not a good NFL weekend for myself.
-
Steve, that is pretty much how we all felt. Hopefully the Steelers won't go to the Super Bowl, but with my luck they will end up winning.
-
Yeah, I really hate that. It's something my dad calls "The Kiss of Death." The whole Vanderjagt thing reminds me of when Gary Anderson missed that field goal that would have won it for the Vikes in 1998. That was painful.
-
The Steelers WILL go to the Super Bowl. :D :D :D :D ;D
-
VANDERJAGT HAS NOT MISSED A FIELD GOAL AT HOME ALL YEAR".
My thoughts exactly, I couldn't agree with you more!
-
Well, Pittsburgh is too good, and they beat Indy and Peyton the whole game.
-
Alright so I was 50% last week with two right and two wrong.
Let's try my unscientific picks for the NFL Conference playoffs this Sunday:
Pittsburgh at Denver
Carolina at Seattle
-
Everyone must hate the Steelers. Well, I've always been the oddball, so I stick with the Steelers.
My picks:
The Steelers will have The Bus run over the Broncos' defense, and Polamalu will sack and intercept Jake Plummer, so the Steelers of course over the Broncos.
Seattle has truly been the underdog to become the king of the pack, and with Shaun Alexander returning, even though the Seahawks still won (another factor), the Seahawks will trample the Panthers.
I've decided to offer co-host spots to anyone willing, and please get me some stats too! Anyone is qualified, and anyone can do it! :D
-
This is the worst matchup ever.
Browns fans hate The Steelers and the Broncos. What am I supposed to do!? Seattle all the way!
-
Told you. But the Steelers have an awesome defense. If it wasn't for that rookie, McFadden, the Indy guy in the end zone would have caught that.
-
In just six days, the biggest NFL game of the year will take place. Yes, Super Bowl XL (40) is nearly upon us. It is something the football world has waited for since the beginning of the season, and two legions of fans from opposite sides of the nation have an extra special reason to watch it. The Pittsburgh Steelers, who have been to five SB games prior, and the Seattle Seahawks, who are making their first appearance, are the two teams that will duke it out for the NFL championship and the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Now, let's talk about how both teams made it to the grandest stage of NFL football. (I would say all football, but the Rose Bowl still lingers fresh in my mind.) The Steelers, entering the playoffs as the #6 seed, upset three teams on the road. They beat Cincinatti, the number three seed, Indianapolis, the number one seed, and Denver, the number two seed. All on the road, all by convincing margins. As we head into the big game, Pittsburgh appears to be a team on a mission to get Jerome Bettis, who will play in his final NFL game, a Super Bowl ring.
After hearing this, you are probably saying, "Give me one good reason why Pittsburgh won't accomplish this."
Okay, I will. The Seattle Seahawks got here just the opposite way that Pittsburgh did. They had home field advantage, and coming off a 13 win season in which they never lost at home, they continued their home winning ways with wins over Washington and Carolina. Just the fact that they stopped Steve Smith and Clinton Portis gives me reason to believe Pittsburgh won't run away with this one. If Matt Hasselbeck and Ben Roethlisberger both perform like the stars they are, and don't have to go to the air more than they choose to, this one could come down to the wire. But if either team makes mistakes early, expect the other team to pounce. It will be up to the defenses, if faced with short fields, to stop the offenses and make them kick field goals. Whoever's defense steps up to the plate and forces enough turnovers for the offense to turn into points will be the victor. Pittsburgh could be in trouble if they have to abandon the running game early, as against the Patriots in last year's AFC title game. Although it didn't hurt them against AFC playoff foes.
My prediction, if both teams play their best, expect a classic ballgame for the books.
-
Great speech, understanding of the game, spelling Roethlisberger right, wanna be my co-host, Jman? I mean, it has been a long time, since there wasn't a FFSC without me, but I still need the job!
-
I'm saying Steelers win 23 - 20.
-
Seattle wins 10-7.
-
I hate to say it, but the Steelers are solid. I really can't make a prediction though. Each team has played quite well. I would have taken the Bengals over the Steelers, but the in game injuries. You can never tell...
-
Great speech, understanding of the game, spelling Roethlisberger right, wanna be my co-host, Jman? I mean, it has been a long time, since there wasn't a FFSC without me, but I still need the job!
Yeah, I knew there was an extra "e" in there somewhere. I would like to co-host, but I've been really busy with school lately. I'm most likely to drop in on weekends.
I'm saying Steelers win 23 - 20.
It could happen.
Seattle wins 10-7.
Also a possibility. We'll have to see how Matt Hasselbeck and Ben Roethlisberger handle the pressure, as both of them make their first ever Super Bowl starts.
-
PIttsburgh, 24-13.
That said, I tend to be really good at blowing predictions for these kinds of games. Except for my joking prediction that "Rich Gannon will throw like 5 picks" in that one Tampa Bay/Oakland Super Bowl a few years ago. I can almost as easily see Seattle winning 24-13, though, it all depends on ... things. I don't think it will be as close as anyone here has said yet, and I think Pittsburgh is a bit more likely to be able to run away with this one. Even though Seattle's defense looked pretty good against Carolina...
-
My opinion? Both defenses are rock-solid. The only way Denver lost was a hard D from Pittsburgh, and in that case, I stand by my prediction. Feel free to laugh in my face when one of the teams has a blowout or however else wrongly my prediction will probably be.
-
I'm going to update the page, and the Steelers will win, but it will definitely be a great game. I will not guess a score, but the Steelers will pull off a victory at the Bus's house.
Jman, you can be co-co-host!
-
Well, this is the day we've waited all NFL season long for: Super Bowl Sunday. That's right. Today, Ben Roethlisberger leads the Pittsburgh Steelers against Matt Hasselbeck and the Seattle Seahawks. While the Steelers are appearing in their sixth Super Bowl, Big Ben is making his first career appearance. The Seahawks are playing in their first Super Bowl in Franchise history.
-
Mr.Melee: *< this is what to do* Right on, Jman! Today is Super Bowl Sunday, the greatest sport event one can imagine. Nothing compares to it! And today, that will be proven. The Pittsburgh Steelers, with Big Ben Roethlisberger, Jerome Bettis: The Bus, Troy Polamalu, Von Oelhoffen, Foote, arm, toe, we got it all! Then there's Matt Hasselbeck, MVP Shaun Alexander, the Tupalu guy, and all those ospreys are rarin' to go! The Steel Curtain will give them a run for their Starbuck's, and we're ready to go! The Terrible Towels, The Bus, Big Ben, and every other player with a big enough heart will prevail! 1.2.3. BREAK!
-
Even though I'm not a sports fan...at all... I thought it'd be cool to make a poll about who you want to win or think will win (if you don't have a preference). Um, yeah. It can be removed later, for other sports in the future.
It probably should've been made earlier, but...meh.
-
I don't care who wins, as long as it ends the game faster.
-
The Steelers are gonna win! I love watchin' the Super Bowl. I wait for it all season long.
-
Well, it won't be 10-7, bobman37. It's, oh man, Pittsburgh just picked off Hasselbeck and now there's a flag. It sounded like it was after the interception. I'm listening on the radio as I type. To get back to the score, it's 14-10. Pittsburgh has the lead. It's in the fourth quarter. Pittsburgh now has the ball after intercepting Matt Hasselbeck. This one could come down to the final minutes. Oh man, Mr.Melee, we should have done a live coverage thing, like an internet play by play.
Pittsburgh just scored! They ran a reverse option, and Antwaan( is that the correct spelling?) Randle El threw a long touchdown pass to Hines Ward, I believe. Pittsburgh is now up by 11, 21-10. Seattle could be in major trouble!
PIttsburgh, 24-13
Hey, they're up 21-10 right now.
-
That last sentence is meant to be mine.
-
PIttsburgh, 24-13.
CLOSE ENOUGH
-
Well, it'd be closer if thew refs didn't suck bigtime. They were honestly the worst refs ever.
-
Steelers are the Super Bowl Champions! But it was boring. I've seen better SB's.
-
It wasn't that boring. There were quite a few twists and turns. And some funny commercials, too.
"Magic fridge! Magic fridge! Magic Fridge!"
That one cracked me up.
Back to the game, it may not have been as exciting as past SBs, but I don't think my co-host Mr. Melee cares. His team (yes, he was admittedly biased) the Pittsburgh Steelers have triumphed here in Detroit, knocking the monkey off of Coach Bill Cowher's back. That's all she wrote. Coming up next, considering someone does it, a game recap of Super Bowl 40. For Mr. Melee, and anyone else involved in FFSC, this is Jman, leaving you with the final score from Super Bowl 40 in Detroit, Pittsburgh 21, Seattle 10.
-
I say Seatle should have NEVER had that touchdown. Roethlessburger NEVER crossed the plain. It was pretty plain and simple. Also, Seattle had a touchdown that was called back for "pass interference" That was not a penalty. Hasselback was called for an illegal block, which was absurd, since Pittsburgh did the same thing on the next series. All in all, I was displeased with the calling of the game, which could have made a large difference in the long run.
-
Hahaha, Insane Steve's prediction was +3. Good job, though. I won 10 betting on the Steelers.
-
I won 5, off of my dad.
-
Yeah, there were some bogus calls made in the game. It just disappoints me that the officiating was that bad in the Super Bowl. if it had been just a regular game, I could have cared less. (Unless the Vikings were getting screwed over by bad calls.)
-
But you see, when you are a Browns fan, you are used to it, so it dosen't matter.
-
THE STEELERS WON! Yeah, I know I'm a bit late.
-
I wanted the Seahawks to win. I was pretty sad about that, but I did go to an awesome Super Bowl party, that kind of made up for it.
-
I'm going to change Sapph's poll. Thanks for adding it, Sapph! :D
-
I'm going to change Sapph's poll. Thanks for adding it, Sapph! :D
EVVIVA IL MILAN !!!!!!!!!!! YUHUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!
Go go with the red-black guys!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Aren't the red-black guys the AFC? (I don't watch the Pro Bowl much, but I will this year).
-
Maybe this year my beloved blue shirts will win!
-
Oh, please. Note that the NFC had one team that anyone thought was any good going into the playoffs. A big part of the NFC's defense lies with Chicago starters, and we saw just how well they did against Carolina. The AFC has most of the good teams in the league. This isn't going to be a game.
AFC 31, NFC 7.
-
I know. I was quoting Homer Simpson. I thought the Pro Bowl was usually high-scoring. I saw a score from one game and it was something like 55-45.
Oh yeah, about those Bears, Steve. I have a friend who is an absolute Bears nut. When the Vikings had the Bears' number over the last several years, I was always ripping on him. Now, it's his turn. The Bears have owned the Vikings over the last couple of seasons, especially at home. 28-3 earlier last season.
-
I surely hope the Pro Bowl will be exciting. Come on, its the last game for 6 months! I didn't even open my Tostito's Hot salsa during the Super Bowl! '-_-'
-
I don't get ESPN. How did the Pro Bowl go?
-
I don't get ESPN. How did the Pro Bowl go?
I didn't watch, but it was significantly closer than I thought it would be, based on the score updates I saw.
-
Agh. Thought it was this week. Who won?
-
My beloved blue-shirts, baby!
-
Seriously? NFC won? WOO! Everyone's saying AFC has the better teams, but I guess the Bluecoats pulled through! Were there any Green Bay Packers starters?
-
So, haw about the olymic games anyone?
-
So, haw about the olymic games anyone?
They're in Torino! WAHOOOOOO!!!!
And you nothing! And you nothing!!!
Have you seen? Italian are the best in fast all the sport!!!!!!!!!
And then when I'll be 18 this year I'll begone doing SNOWBOARD!!!!!!!! I love it!!! I like it!!!
When I have been to Carnia mountains, I've learned skiing without rachets after only 3 days!!!! I have it in my blood!
It's a beutiful sensation have the power of the velocity in your body! I can control it very well!!!
I'm going to do snowboard instead of skiing because I ATE rachets!! I don't feel myself free!!!
But the sport of my life has always been Judo.I had done it since I was 5 years old! But now, I don't like it very much!
-
Don't hurt me! Ah!
The Olympics are going fine, I see. There must be controversy somewhere in this forum, as we have Super Caterina! from the Olympics home in Italy, Ultima Shadow from Australia, and a ton of other people from the U.S.
-
Don't hurt me! Ah!
We ar the best! we'll win all the medals! BWA,HA,HAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Olympics are going fine, I see. There must be controversy somewhere in this forum, as we have Super Caterina! from the Olympics home in Italy, Ultima Shadow from Australia, and a ton of other people from the U.S.
Why? Why tons from the US??? It's time to change the world!
I've been in Australia last summer, too! =o However, I can't speak english... =D
It's fantastic....
-
Well, Italy is easily one of my favourite countries in the world... but I like Australia better.
Heh, it doesn't matter, because we'll own in both the Commonwealth and Winter Olympic Games. :D
Seriously, I liked the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics... they were unique, definitely. I've just noticed, though, that, for some odd reason, there are giant metal fish in the Yarra River in Melbourne. It's like some kind of odd conspiracy. o_0
And, of course, I have to study the Olympics in two of my subjects... Italian, owing to the fact that it's being held in Torino, and Geography.
-
Sai parlare italiano? ;)
My plane landed in Melbourne when I arrive in Australia! But I've been in the Mount Gambier High School.
I've spent my holidays in a school....My summer holidays in a school...But it was funny! =)
I've study also japanese! ^__^
Ogenkidesuka? Onamaewanandesuka? There were also some japanese from Takarazuka high school! =)
I'm very proud of it because some japanese bought 60 paintings of my grandfather in the '70s! They were very rich! =o
They came with a personal interpreter who spoke italian and they had a personal plane!! And then they have bought ALL the paintings of a show of my grandfather...=) They were from Osaka, near Takarazuka and so I've gave a catalogue of the piantings of my grandfather to them(hoping they have links with the family of the two rich japanese guys). They are very nice people! =)
I hope to returne there this year, but i don't forget to go to the sea before, because I've forgot how it is...=(
MAMMAMIA!!!!
Do you come from Mount gambier????
Are there in your school some italians came with some school projects?
-
Hey SC!. Have you been to Turin, Turino, or whichever it is? *the media here can't decide*
-
Hey, any chance you could put "Wrestling" up there? Not the WWE stuff, but Olympic style wrestling.
-
I'll just change it to "Any Olympic Event." Is that good?
-
Sure, why not.
-
This place should get busy once the baseball season starts up again. I can't believe Sasha Cohen lost out on the gold medal. That's too bad. I blame it on the commentator. He was saying about how she was the favorite and just boasting, and then she fell. Twice. Well, my heart goes out to her, better luck next time.
-
Ohhh that's right, the Cubs' annual battle for mediocrity starts pretty soon.
-
Do you come from Mount gambier????
Are there in your school some italians came with some school projects?
Heh, bit too far north from my home... I live in Southern Victoria. I do study Italian, and intend to see it through to Year 12.
Hey SC!. Have you been to Turin, Turino, or whichever it is? *the media here can't decide*
It's because some people say the Italian variation, and some say the English. Some of the Italian region/city names are better- instead of Rome, Sicily and Piemonte, I say Roma, Sicilia and Piedmont.
BTW, does anyone here watch cricket?
-
No, but I've heard of cricket. Isn't it the thing that chirps, or is it a phone company?
-
You know what I hate? People in the media who make comments like "Our athlete settled for the silver medal..." Yes. Because being worse than one person out of over 3 billion of your sex at something makes you a horrible failure.
What I think may be interesting to have done is take all the people who say something to this effect, and force them to try and replicate the time/score of the athlete they commented about. They'd get beaten with a crowbar once every failed attempt. Repeat until the time/score is replicated, or the person dies, whichever comes first. I bet 100% of the time, it'll be the latter.
DISCLAIMER: I do not condone the action above. It is a representation of what I think of this practice. S'all.
-
Preach on, Steve! That's 100% correct. I'm getting sick of people saying that. 2nd place is great, no matter what someone says.
-
Absolutely, I.S. It's an honor to be in the Olympics at all, so winning a medal, whether it's bronze, silver, or gold, is truly an honor and privelage. Now, if we were talking about football commentators...
-

Ha, I'd love to see that. But not the crowbar/death part, just these people-who think-olympic-athletes-are-horrible-because-they-didn't-win-gold being forced to see if they could even amount to the athlete they based.
-
How I would love to see every commentator for CBS face the Steel Curtain. I would pop popcorn for that event.

Depressing news in the world of baseball. Especially if you're a Twins fan like me.
44 year old baseball Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett suffered a stroke on Sunday morning at his home in Scotsdale, Arizona. He was rushed to the hospital where they performed Neuro surgery. He was then airlifted to the hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. He is currently listed in critical condition. On Sunday, Twins outfielder Torii Hunter, who now plays the spot Kirby once filled, took himself out of the lineup upon hearing of the news. And Twins broadcaster Dan Gladden, who played with Kirby on the 1987 World championship team, took his leave and went to Arizona to be with his former teammate.
The Twins released a statement requesting that fans keep Kirby and his family in their prayers. No further information has been released, but it is my theory that the stroke occurred from complications of Glaucoma, which ended Kirby's career in 1996. This is a depressing note for all of baseball, as Kirby was one of the greats.
-
And now, a follow-up on the Kirby Puckett story.
It appears that Kirby Puckett will be taken off life support tonight, and could be dead by tomorrow. This coming after he had a stroke, which I mentioned earlier. Apparently, his chances went from considerably decent to slim to none. Now, it's only a matter of time.
EDIT: We have breaking news: Kirby Puckett is dead at the age of 44 from a stroke. Apparently, he hadn't been in good health after his baseball career. He was a bit overweight and he had glaucoma, which may have induced complications.
Kirby played 12 years with the Minnesota Twins. He first broke into the big leagues in 1984, and rose to stardom quickly, helping the Twins to their first ever World Championship in 1987, and another in 1991. His career was brought to an early end in 1996, when he contracted glaucoma and lost sight in one of his eyes. One of the most enduring Puckett moments was in the 1991 World Series when he hit a game winning homerun that forced game 7 against the Atlanta Braves. Other highlights include his many over the fence catches that robbed many opposing players of homeruns.
This is a real blow to the Twins organization as the baseball regular season draws near. He will be missed by all who knew him, and the millions of fans who watched him bring this team national glory. Kirby Puckett 1961-2006. Rest in Peace, Kirby.
-
I'm suprised I didn't come to this earlier... I chose skateboarding, because it pwns! Yeah, the best deck brand is The Bloodsucking ToyMachine Skateboard Company. All hale the underground masters!
-
Jman, sorry that Kirby Puckett is dead. Play on, Kirby.
-
Hey Jman (and everyone else who's going to post stories), I don't want you to take this the wrong way. I just wanted to make sure that if you're using a story from a different site or source, and taking it word for word, it would probably be a good idea to put the source in your post. I'm not saying you did take it from somewhere else, you're in all probability a very good writer and that was all created from your mind. Just saying, if you ever use a verbatim report, put the URL or name of the website from whence you got it.

-
Errr.....a tripod image?
-
Oh no, I just made that report myself, following the news around the area.
But the report is my own.
-
wow, yeah, it worked before, must be some tripod act or something...
-
*takes cap off in respect* RIP, Kirby.
Well, baseball almost here! Can't wait to go to a home game again...and spend $3 on pop! -_-' Hey, has anyone tried Cool Dogs, while we're on ballpark food discussion?
-
I went to one of the Twins' playoff games and was seen on national television. My dad got really good seats from a friend. We were right by the foul pole down the left field line. During the game, Lew Ford threw a ball into the stands just below us. It was awesome.
Now, on a different note, it's almost time for the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament!
In the only game which I know of today, Duke pulled out an 80-76 win over Miami.
-
Yes, this is March Madness, and it sure is mad everywhere. Somone's mad at me for sporting a Super Bowl XL Steelers shirt! :P
-
Did anyone watch the Big 12 Wrestling championships on FSN yesterday? They were pretty awesome.
-
It's because some people say the Italian variation, and some say the English. Some of the Italian region/city names are better- instead of Rome, Sicily and Piemonte, I say Roma, Sicilia and Piedmont.
No, no, no: Torino, Roma, Sicilia e Piemonte!
You were near: pied(e)-piede=foot, mont-monte=mountain
HEY! Super Caterina's returned!
..But I think you're not interested in it... -.-
Do you see the Paraholimpics now?
They're so amazing...!!!!!!!!
PS: hey! Lots of changes have been here!
-
I'm getting cable TV next Monay, so then I should be able to keep up with sports easier. Is anyone keeping up with the World Baseball Classic?
-
Not me. To me, all pro wrestling leagues are just TV businesses. Also, ever have a Big Ben Burger? Show your respect to Ben Roethlisberger! :)
-
It was a tourney, so I don't think it had anything to do with buisness.
-
Um, anyone fill out a bracket? I got Duke winning. But with my luck my bracket won't be good.
Oh, and the WBC. Yes, I watched some of it. Best game: Cuba v. Puerto Rico. Cba almost came back in the top of the 9th. It seems that the last stricke was a ball on a 3-2 count.
-
I made some long-needed changes, so enjoy!
-
Koop, didn't Duke lose to Texas or LSU or something?
I'm not a huge fan of college sports, but March Madness is always exciting. I really wanted Washington to beat UCONN yesterday, they were really close! =(
-
Ya, Duke lost to LSU.
One of the more bracket-shaking games this year. I got Connecticut, if it matters.
-
Youk now what I'm mad at? The Steelers weren't able to resign Antwaan Randle El, so know he's at the Redskins! Ahhhhhhhh! Also, von Oelhoffen went to the Jets *shivers* and Edgerrin James went to the Cardinals *shrieks*
-
Well, my bracket just, um... died.
And what the heck is with George Mason???
-
Woah, what?? Since when was Edgerrin James on the Steelers?
-
He wasn't. Mr. Melee just forgot to put down that he went from the Colts to the Cardinals.
-
That's what I thought. Seems like Arizona gets the good running backs.
-
Yet they still suck.........XD. (I'm a Cardinals fan, next to the Cowboys.)
-
Why is that? People get the best players yet their team can lose every game.
-
I know this is a big bump, but there is an even bigger reason to do so: the World Cup of Soccer/ Football! I thought it would be necessary to resurrect this topic for the biggest sports' biggest event! Please vote on the updated poll and feel free to discuss about who will win the World Cup.
-
I don't really like soccer.
-
Brazil. I would like USA to win...but Brazil is the most favored to win.
-
I don't like to watch soccer, but it's so much different when you're actually out there playing it. It's fun.
-
For Boo_penguin, I vote Argentina.
-
Being an ignorant-about-soccer American, I'm also going with Brazil because they are the #1 seed.
Although I did watch the Czechs give team USA a pretty nice beatdown today.
-
That's because they're second in the world. Trust me, I have a friend that knows all about soccer.
-
We (the USA) were pwned yesterday. But, one of the announcers said we were the best team out there. ?_? Didn't seem like it. Hope it's true, though.
-
I'd like either England or Australia to win, but I think Brazil will.
-
At least support your own teams for your countries people! Just because someone was favored to win doesn't mean they will win! Just look at the Pittsburgh Steelers. How many times were they unfavored to win their games? I know they are two different sports, but comebacks are always possible (like the Australians beating the Japanese in less than 10 minutes left).
-
Brazil. I would like USA to win...but Brazil is the most favored to win.
I WOULD like USA to win. I just don't think it's going to happen.
-
IN OTHER NEWS
You guys have probably heard this already, but Ben Roethlisberger, 2-year quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers NFL football team, was in a severe motorcycle accident two days ago. He was hit by a car and was thrown from his motorcycle. He was in surgery for seven hours, which fixed a broken jaw and broken nose. Brain, spine, chest and abdomen were not severely injured, doctors said, and Roethlisberger is in severe but stable condition.
-
Thank you for reminding me, bobman. Mr. Roethlisberger was not wearing a helmet when his head hit the windshield, and then the pavement. During those seven hours of surgery, doctors also repaired a 9-inch laceration in the back of his head. Luckily, his knees, which have had many surgeries performed on them, were not seriously hurt, so Roethlisberger will play later in the season. The best news is that Roethlisberger was released from the hospital today. Get well soon, Big Ben!
-
Finally, this thread has come back from the ashes!
-
Finnally it's not the Browns that catch the bad break! The rival games this season will be INTENSE!
-
You know what's great about America?
They're terrible at the sport that all the world plays, so they make up their own sports, become the best in the world at THOSE, and then completely discredit the sport that everyone else in the world plays.
-
America the beautiful...
-
Well, we do great at the Olympics...........
I'd say we are far from being the worst at sports. We just suck at soccer.
-
That's because a lot of the sports were invented by us, as IS stated.
-
I dunno. I just like watching sports.
-
Sports are fun to watch, especially when you see the players crunch each other into the dirt, or a fight breaks out, a REAL fight.
As long as the USA beats Ghana, and Italy beats the Czech Republic, we will advance to the Round of Sixteen. There are others ways to advance, but this is the simplest one to put in words. Also, we have to beat Ghana, no matter what situation it is.
-
Has anyone heard about Joe Mauer and his .380 batting average? He's getting 2-3 hits a game, playing every freakin day, and the superpowers of the league want to snuff him from the All Star Game? He's leading the whole freakin Major leagues in average. He's hitting the ball better than Ichiro! If they snuff him just because he doesn't have 25 home runs and 95 RBI at this point of the season, that would be a great tragedy. At least he's helped the Twins back to .500 after being 27-34 last week.
-
Errr.......Barry Bonds is taking steroids!
An update on Roethlisberger:
Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger and the woman he crashed into in a motorcycle crash last week are both receiving citations. Roethlisberger's troubles were "failure to wear a helmet" and "failure to drive according to his license class."
-
Hey, do any other Twins fans roam the forum? We're on an 8 game winning streak right now.
-
Graghhhhhh!! No, no no! The Mavericks lost the NBA championship! I can't..........well, anyway. I still feel sore about them losing.
-
Desagana Diop. WTD.
-
How the heck did they lose!!! Last I saw they were winning like 30-10. I know that was just the first quarter, but come on!
-
And what hurts worse for me is that I live in the DFW area. The Mavs were THE team to root for, and they got whupped by the Heat. The refs were terrible, needless to say. Call me a sore loser, but it really was poorly run by the officals.
-
Ok, so I'm watching the US/Ghana game and the officiating is very blatantly swayed against the US, like it's been in every match so far.
You know, if I didn't know better, I'd think that the rest of the world hates the United States.
-
Not everyone hates us.
Well, I stopped watching the Fifa Cup, just because the games last quite a long time, and most of the time, the players are moving up the field instead of making shots.
-
The games are less than half as long as a football game, including halftime. *that's the only sport I can relate to*
-
When you're watching nothing but the ball being kicked around, it seems longer. XD
-
You know, if I didn't know better, I'd think that the rest of the world hates the United States.
It's because everyone hates our president, since he's Christian and everything.
Well see there goes my Brazil theory in the slaughter of Japan 4-1. Say hello to the World Cup champions!
-
It's because everyone hates our president, since he's Christian and everything.
If I didn't know better, I thought you were being sarcastic. Correct me if I am wrong.
-
Ya
I mean
I was thinking more along the lines of "Everyone hates our President because he makes disasterous, costly decisions with little or no positive results without thinking about them or showing any regret when they inevitably backfire."
-
I can see your "Don't blame me, I voted for Kerry" sticker on the back of your head, I.S.
President Bush has made many good decisions, but this isn't the topic to discuss that in, and with politics, I can get a little "Flamy."
Well, the USA hasn't proved anything this year. We're out of the World Cup. So...
*puts on an Australia t-shirt* Go Australia!
-
I agree with you, Mr. Meele. George Bush is a great President.
-
How? (Answer that in another topic, please.)
-
If I didn't know better, I thought you were being sarcastic. Correct me if I am wrong.
Well if I sounded like it, I didn't mean to. My dad informs me that muslims in different countries HATE Christians. Like they execute people that convert.
Anyway, when does Portugal play?
-
Well if I sounded like it, I didn't mean to. My dad informs me that muslims in different countries HATE Christians. Like they execute people that convert.
Anyway, when does Portugal play?
It's true. I learned all about the most popular worldviews at Worldview Academy.
Boy, the Twins are smacking up the Cubbies right now. 7-1 I think. Justin Morneau won't be an all star because of the biased "East Coast Popularity contest," but he's still going to have 20-25 homers before the break. 19 HR, 61 RBI so far this year (including tonight.)
-
Cubs lol. Who let this team into the major leagues?
:(
-
Hahaha, yea. I mean, seriously, this team doesn't win the World Series for about 100 years, then they come close one year, and blame blowing a 3-1 series lead in the NLCS on a FAN. After the Cubs mess up twice in that inning on their own merits, and lose game 7. Again, on their own merits. The fan reaction to the Bartman incident was THE reason I stopped following the Cubs. Ya, let's throw beer at him and provoke the governor to consider him a bigger menace to society than a triple murderer*.
*After the series, the goveror of Illinois said that "he wouldn't pardon Bartman if he was ever on death row for whatever reason."
-
Ah yes, I remember that adventure. Did they seriously think that blowing up the baseball that the guy caught would erase the memory? Boy, some people take the sport of baseball too seriously. I get frustrated easily, but I would never blame a fan for a loss.
-
YAY!!! Portugal made it through the first round!! WAHOO!!
-
Darn. I need to catch up on the action. I'll get a stats tracker up tomorrow. Round of 16, here I come!
-
I bet that Bartman guy has been banned from Wrigley Field from here on out, eh Steve?
-
I'm surprised he hasn't been hunted down and killed by some spiteful unemplyed alcoholic.
-
And once again the Cubs snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
-
Alright. The promised update has arrived.
(I was really behind in the action).
-
A couple of day games going right now.
In Minnesota, the Twins lead the Dodgers 4-0 on a grand slam by Torii Hunter.
Joe Mauer is also 1-1, his tenth hit of the series, putting his average ever closer to .400.
And the other game features the Yankees and Braves scoreless so far. 3 hits in that game.
-
I can't believe Brazil lost to France! But Portugal beat England, hooray!!!
-
Germany better beat Italy! My Great Great Grandmother and Father came from from Germany, so I picked them to win.
-
All right, guys, let's have a discussion. Who got snubbed from the All Star game that deserved to go?
-
Noooooooo! Germany lost.................oh well, Italy was my second pick.
The way I see it, both teams can win first and second place now. Still..........
Aghh, I'm not havin' a good sports year. Besides the Steelers winning the Super Bowl, everyone has lost.
-
Oh man! The World Cup has gone into overtime! OT has started just now, with Italy and France tied 1 all.
-
And Italy wins 5-3 in a penalty kick shootout.
-
So, ya, how 'bout that epic stunt Zidane pulled in extra time? Header of a different sort, if you will.
-
To answer the poll I'd say "yes", but not "Yes!"
-
I enjoyed the world cup game. It was a fun time. I had a bunch of people over my home, and we partied after the Italian victory!
-
2006 World Cup Final played by Legos: http://video.yahoo.com/video/play?vid=2fc3873368fb593469ec47e91255e695.578077
-
Crap, I missed the rest of the Home Run Derby. Who got the victory?
-
I checked the MLB site, and Ryan Howard won the 2006 MLB Home Run Derby. I couldn't belive David Ortiz lost! He even knocked six balls into the Allegheny; one went in on the fly (he's only the third person to hit a home run into the Allegheny River on the fly). Andy Marte won the Triple-A Home Run Derby.
Also, I don't want to make another poll for this, but who do you think will win the Triple A and the MLB All-Star games?
-
It's too bad Travis Hafner wasn't in the Home Run derby. He'd have pwn'd all.
-
Well, the final results of the 2006 MLB All-Star game are: American League: 3 National League: 2. And the NL had a chance to win it, too, with Ryan Howard up to bat and a man on base.
-
That was great. There the AL was with 2 out and nobody on. Then, they get a single, a ground rule double, and a 2 run triple, and then Mariano Rivera closes it out for the save. Too bad Francisco Liriano never pitched. Oh well, now I can go see him at the Dome on Thursday.
-
How come Zambrano didn't pitch? Well, now I don't feel so bad for missing it.
-

/me sets down the pop, popcorn, chips, dip, nachos, tacos, pizza, and other snacks needed for the NFL Season
Who's ready for some football?
-
I am! Vikings vs. Redskins in the first MNF game for ESPN! Should be a good one. But there is one thing...our #1 receiver Koren Robinson was arrested for drunk driving last night. He faces suspension for an entire season.
-
I'm ready for some football too. I'm a Steelers fan so I'm hoping for a repeat of last year, but Big Ben hurt his thumb yesterday at camp. I'm also worried about our WRs since we lost Antwaan Randle El and now have two rookies (Willie Reid and Santonio Holmes, who has been arrested twice since we signed him) plus Cedrick Wilson, who I prefer as a #3 guy.
I did hear Willie Parker is having a good camp. Hopefully Duce Staley can run the ball in the endzone to replace The Bus.
Not worried about the defense as long as Troy Polamalu is around. This guy covers so much ground.
-
What do you think? I am a Browns fan. Ha.
-
Cowboys are the best. Well, not in skill, but they are my favorite team.
-
Ooh, the football speculation is flying about as much as the actual football out of a quarterback's hand. The start of a new sports season is like Christmas, being that you hope you've been a good enough fan to able to see your team win the Super Bowl. You also have trouble sleeping at night because you're wondering how your team will pan out in their next game.
-
Koopaslaya--nothing against you. But I do wish you the best of luck with Lee Suggs. Heard he failed a physical to void a trade.
Of course, we've got an injured Hines Ward right now. And Big Ben is questionable for the game with that thumb injury.
-
Heh, two Steelers fans that I now know. We've got our own problem up here in Minnesota, which I addressed a couple of posts ago.
-
/me high-fives AbercrombieBaseball
Great choice of team. I just wish we weren't starting so rocky this year. I did not even know that Ben has gotten another injury after his horrific motorcycle accident. Now I hear Hines Ward is injured, and I am very displeased at knowing a former Buckeye (yes, my team:) has gotten arrested not just once, but twice. I am, however, confident in our rookies, as Cowher knows who to pick for a great team.
I wish I could get a picture of my Troy Polamalu shirt. I can, however, provide a link (http://news.steelers.com/catalog/product/62882/) to a picture of the shirt on the Steelers' page. It is very similar to what ACB said.
I see my co-host is ready for the football season to begin! And, uh, Jman, Lizard Dude, and TBT, you do know that the Vikings' first game is against the Steelers, right? And you all know you are going to lose, right? Also, whenever I do a preview of my post, it says "null" at the top. Why is that?
-
Second game, and no, I don't think we're going to lose. Then again, it's also preseason and thus, doesn't count.
-
Well, it's finally here! The start of football season is tonight at 8:00 P.M. Eastern! Watch as the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Miami Dolphins. It is immenent, however, that the victory will go to the Steelers. Watch anyways with a cold Barq's root beer and a full bowl of hot salsa and tortilla chips! If you listen closely, you can probably hear my Terrible Towel being waved...
-
Dude, I'll laugh at you if the Dolphins win. My dad and I have made another bet this season. It should be fun.
-
Well, after the first big controversy of the football season, Pittsburgh wins 28-17 over the 0-1 Miami Dolphins. I couldn't really tell if the foot counted as out of bounds or the dive counted as a touchdown. Even without it we would have won. Meh. We did win, though :D.
-
I just hope the Cowboys win big this season. They're my all time favorite team.
-
Hate to change the subject, but there are 6 people left in the tennis U.S. Open. Who do you want to win it? I'm rooting for Roddick and Sharapova.
Men
Andy Roddick (USA)
Roger Federer (Switzerland)
Nikolay Davydenko (Russia)
Mikhail Youzhny (Russia)
Women
Maria Sharapova (Russia)
Justine Henin-Hardenne (Belgium)
-
Well, I'm satisfied. The Steelers won, Ohio State University won, great week so far.
I'm watching the not totally satisfying football games right now. Man, Trent Green got nailed! That was a hard hit, worse than the Panther's QB last year. Well, he's off the field. Probably suffered a severe concussion. Hope he's alright. In the mean time, I'm surprised that the Seahawks aren't up 52-0 right now. I guess the Lions are actually improving. However, that will not earn them a record of something better than 7-9.
-
Yeah, they'll lose every game like that because they can't score, at least not against the NFC champs, but the defense is there. At least for one week. I wouldn't be surprised if the Lions wind up with one of the better defenses in the NFL when it's all said and done.
Vikes are 1-0 after a grinder of a game on Monday. Up next is Carolina, the same team that ended Daunte's career as a Viking. But I have faith in Brad. He looked sharp all preseason and again against Washington.
-
The Cowboys are 0-1 after losing to the Jags last week. It's hard to believe they could lose another opener, but they did, and the only place to go is up. The Cowboys had the game, but like so many other games, they died in the 2nd half, and lost....................
And we had a chance to win it back, until Bledsoe tossed up two interceptions on the same drive (the first one was called back, but the next play, he tossed another)
This should be in the Angst thread too, I'm so p***ed.
-
Week 1 BROWNS summary. First play: Charlie Frye connects with Braylon Edwards who makes a TD catch for 75 yards. It was called back because of holding away from the play. That my friends i shte summary of the whole season. I promise you. A step too slow and an inch too short.
-
Probably suffered a severe concussion.
Hah! I was right! Well, he seems to be doing fine. After a hit like that, I bet he might miss a game.
Great. Now Troy Polamalu has a shoulder injury. There goes our best defensive player...however he is questionable for Monday's game.
-

Why in the world would they keep throwing the ball if they had a late lead? Run the ball, burn the clock, and trust your defense.
-
They didn't have the late lead. They had the lead into the 3rd and just shut down after that. He was throwing because running would have made things worse. (Actually, they did run the ball with :28 seconds left..........on their own 30! How stupid is that?) Oh well, if I think I could do it better, I should be out there, right? They did their best, I guess.
-
Sorry. the way you put it, it sounded like they had the game nailed down when he threw the pick.
-
Well, football fans, it's week 2 of the 2006 NFL season. I'll definitely be watching when the Vikings play the Panthers today at noon.
-
Finally, the Cowboys beat the Redskins. Last year, we lost both games.
-
Well I wish I had a favorite football team, but I guess I really don't. I don't care who wins as long as it's not the Raiders...
-
Well I wish I had a favorite football team, but I guess I really don't. I don't care who wins as long as it's not the Raiders...
ESPN was talking about the reasons why Oakland might NOT win...a game this season.
-
Actually, I think the Bucs won't win a single game this year. And it's not suprising, since they were the first team to do it anyway.
-
Well, my Steelers aren't acting like Super Bowl Champions this year :/. They better improve soon to 2-2, or else they're in a deep heap.
-
The Browns have won. I cannot believe it. What a fantastic game.
-
Cowboys whupped the Titians 45-14. Awesome (yet boring, and one-sided) game.
-
Boring and one-sided? Didn't you see Haynesworth stomp that guy? Haynesworth should have been taken to jail right then. He stomped on a guy's head with cleats when his helmet was already off. That is assault. I'm glad he's getting fined and suspended without pay.
Also, for anyone that missed the Sunday and Monday Night games, the outcomes were:
Sunday: Seahawks 6, Bears 37
Monday: Packers 9, Eagles 31
-
Yes, we're hearing about it a bunch here. He got suspended for five games. But considering the way the Titans are going now, I doubt Haynesworth's absence will have much effect on the team...
(I live in Nashville, if you didn't know)

I don't think he should go to jail. Everyone does stupid things that they live to regret. "Let he who is without sin step forth and be known."
-
It is still against the law, and anyone who breaks the law should be punished fairly (I am aware of that Bible passage, by the way, but it doesn't affect this situation very well).
-
Let's switch the topic to hockey. It's opening night, isn't it?
-
Hockey? Meh. I used to watch it with my dad, but the both of us have lost interest in it.
-
Opening night being last night? Hmmm, by looking at Sportscenter's Top Ten Plays, I would think hockey's been going on already.
-
Meh, this could probably go in the ANGST thread.
I have watched the Minnesota Twins fall apart in the playoffs after an amazing run.
-

Shut up, you. I like the White Sox. It takes skill have the second best record in the majors at the All-Star break and then miss the playoffs by 5 games.
-
Oh...sorry, forgot about that.
-
Hooray, the Tigers beat the Yankees! One big step closer to the World Series, where we'll win.
-
The Padres lost...

New York Yankees Pitcher Dies in Plane Crash
Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle died earlier today in a plane crash in Manhattan, New York. Two people were confirmed dead. It is unsure whether or not Lidle was at the controls of the plane when it crashed.
-
I heard about that. He first signed with the Twins, and went on to play with 7 teams in 9 years. Tragic loss.
-
I actually thought it was suicide at first (which would seem like an extremely childish decision to kill yourself over a game that is supposed to be a pasttime and a fun time), but I've also heard that he wasn't piloting. So, terrorist plot? Privae pilot heart attack? Who knows...
-
I like to think it was just a stroke of terrible luck for an inexperienced pilot.
Wow, this shocks me...the Cardinals are leading the Bears 20-3 in the 3rd quarter.
-
You're kidding? The Bears should be winning!
EDIT: Bears scored as soon as I turned it on. 23-10 now.
-
It was no joke. By the end of the first half, the Cardinals, a team usually overlooked, were pwning Da Bears 20-0. However, it would change. Mistakes led to touchdowns, and soon, the score flip-flopped to 24-23. Da Bears had scored three touchdowns by using their defense (a punt return, a fumble return, and a blocked punt return, all for touchdowns). Rackers, who had already missed two field goals that night, stepped up to the turf once more, this time for a 40-yarder. He missed. So, in a triumphant comeback, da Bears are still undeafeated, 6-0. This has been Sportscenter. Good night, everybody.
-
"Good Night, everybody!"
I could just imagine Yakko Warner giving that entire report for some reason.
-
Well, in a mostly slow game, tha St. Louis Cardnials have just beaten the New York Mets 3-1 to win the series 4-3. It was a tied game of 1-1 until a home run in the top of the ninth put the Cardinals into the lead. The Mets tried, but one last strikeout ended their season. So, it will be the St. Louis Cardinals vs. the Detroit Tigers in the 2006 MLB World Series. From the Fungi Forum news desk, this has been Sportscenter. Good night, everybody.

Fungi Forum Sportscenter NFL report: Dateline Seattle!
The Minnesota Vikings defeated the Seattle Seahawks 31-13 at Qwest Field in Seattle, Washington earlier today. Also, the Seahawks lost quarterback Matt Hasselbeck late in the 3rd quarterback. Chester Taylor set a new Vikings record with a 95 yard touchdown run, and the offense looked the best that it has all season. Marcus Robinson caught a touchdown pass, runningback Mewelde Moore threw a touchdown pass, and the defense scored another touchdown with an endzone fumble recovery. It's obvious that the Vikings made good use of the bye. This has been the Vikings report! Look forward to more action this next week!
-
Boy, a lot of good games happened today (unfortunately, our viewing area let us see the Lie-downs game...big woop compared to every other game). Well, there were a lot of great games and upsets today. For example, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Philadelphia Eagles with a record-setting 62-yard field goal with about two seconds remaining. The Atlanta Falcons also caused an upset against my team, the Steelers, 41-38 after a FG in OT. The Texans overwhelmed the favored Jacksonville Jaguars 27-7. The Raiders also received their first win of the season by beating the Cardinals (who just last week almost beat da Bears) 22-9.
Lastly, for those of you who aren't watching the World Serious, the score is 0-3 Detroit. This has been Sportscenter. We now hope you continue/ start to watch the game.
-
62 yard field goal? Man, I'll have to watch the real SC to see that tonight!
-
Excuse me, that field goal was not record-breaking. The record is still tied by Jason Elam and Tom Dempsey, each completeing a 63-yard field goal.
Well, the World Series is tied up 1-1. The next game is scheduled tomorrow night @ 8:33 on FOX. Hope you all will be watching. Go Tigers!
-
And in a much needed update, the Cardinals win the World Series 4-1, the NFL is in week 9-10 I believe, and the biggest College football game of the year save the national championship, Michigan vs Ohio State, takes place today at 2:30. Another game with bowl implications, the Gophers and the Hawkeyes is taking place right now with the Gophers leading 6-0. Minnesota needs to win to go to a bowl game.
EDIT: Dateline Columbus! The Ohio State Buckeyes have defeated the Michigan Wolverines 42-39. This is exactly how every 1 vs 2 game should go.
-
Yes! The Buckeyes have prevailed! Being a Buckeye fan, and being able to watch the game in a divided room of OSU fans and Michigan fans, I am very happy to see them win. National Championship, here we come...
In other news, the biggest (or so I say) rivalry in NFL, the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Cleveland Browns, takes place tomorrow I believe at 1:00 P.M. Eastern Time. Watch for Pittsburgh to win!
-
42-39 I believe. It was an awesome game.
-
21/20 UPDATE
------------
The Pittsburgh Steelers have overcome a difficult game against rival Cleveland Browns 24-20 after an amazing game and finish. Congratulations to the now 4-6 Steelers and the 3-7 Browns.
-
Boo.
-
As for the new poll, I think Chicago will beat Indianapolis in the Super Bowl. Indy can, after all, be beaten... We were shown that today. I believe both teams are now 9-1?
-
Well, in another disappointing game put forth by the Cowboys, the Colts managed to..............oh wait, the Cowboys won!? Heck yeah!!!! Mr. Meele, you should put the 'boys on the poll for that one! (Yeah, I know it says other)
Cowboys: 21
Colts: 14
*dances all over the dinner table*
-
The way they were winning, you just can't win 16 superclose games all in a row. They were bound to get tripped up sooner or later.
-
Yeah, but the Cowboys did it!
-
*chokes on dust in air*
Welcome back *cough cough* to the Fungi Forum Sportscenter! Well, after a rather long break, the Sportscenter is back in action. And just in time for the middle of the NFL Divisional Playoffs. Currently, the upcoming matches are:
Bears vs. Saints - NFC Championship Game
Colts vs. Patriots/Chargers - AFC Championship Game
An update will come at the end of the Patriots/Chargers game.
-
Boo.
-
I have returned with a Sportscenter update!
The Chicago Bears and the Indianapolis Colts will play in Super Bowl XLI. Mr Melee will fill you in on just how this matchup came to be a little later on in the show.
-
First off... Who called the Super Bowl? :)
As for the new poll, I think Chicago will beat Indianapolis in the Super Bowl. Indy can, after all, be beaten... We were shown that today. I believe both teams are now 9-1?
...Now, only one last thing needs to happen for me to be absolutely correct.
Also:
BRETT FAVRE IS COMING BACK !celebrate
-
In a much needed update, The Indianapolis Colts are Super Bowl Champions! They defeated Chicago 29-17 in Super Bowl 41. Meanwhile, fast forward about a month, and it is NCAA Tournament Time! March Madness is officially upon us.
-
Go Mean Green!
-
Yeah! Mean Joe...wait. Anyway, the NCAAs start Thursday.
-
Mean Green be the name of North Texas, who actually managed to make it this year.
-
Yeah, they stuck with Memphis for awhile.
-
............so I guess they lost. :(
-
Uh huh. Anyway, tonight, the Final Four teams play for the right to go to the national Championship.
-
Who are they? I haven't been watching.
-
Ohio State, Florida, UCLA, Georgetown
-
God, my brother and I have done it again. We both predicted that it'd be Florida and Ohio St. fighting for the championship during football season, and now both Florida and O.S.U have made it to the Final Four.
-
I've got Florida winning the championship.
And on a sad note, legendary broadcaster Herb Carneal passed away this morning at the age of 83. He was the voice of the Twins for 45 years.
-
And the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago White Sox, 12-5. Take that!
-
Ha. The Twins beat the Orioles 7-4. So both of us are 1-0.
-
Now, we're 2-0. Hopefully the Tigers will cool off this year.
-
Whoo, the Twins swept the Orioles, now bring on the Sox. Or...once we get there. Road series, I forgot.
-
Stupid Gators. Again. Beaten in two different sports by the same college. Ugh.
I swear the OSU game was rigged. We could not have lost to the once-8 Gators.
-
My brother has beaten me thrice. Once for the Super Bowl beat, and two for the Gators.
-
The Indians Series against Seattle was SNOWED out. I have had a White Easter. Wow.
-
Thought it might be a good time to revive this with the MLB playoffs approaching, and the first Sunday of the NFL regular season.
-
Vikings are up 7-0 at the half!
-
My Pittsburgh Steelers looked good today, destroying the Browns 34-7. All the better for my Fantasy Football team :D.
-
Cowboys lead the Giants 17-16! And they're movin' the sticks!
-
Curse the Vikings. Green Bay all the way!
The Pack beat Philly. The Eagles' special teams was a joke.
-
The Cowboys beat the Giants by 10. The final score was 45-35.
We actually won the first game. Amazing.
