Title: Subliminal Messages?
Post by: Glorb on December 25, 2005, 10:41:07 AM
I've noticed quite a few wierd occurances in some of the Mario games, subliminal messages, it would seem. Many seem like harmless coincidences, while others are almost certainly deliberate. Let's see...

Wario Ware: Touched! - Go into the "Ashley's Theme Song" track in the music box thingy. Play it at twice the speed. Notice anything? It seems as if, halfway through, she says either "I grab the kids to kill" or "I grant the kids to Hell". I first noticed this eerie phenomenon at my friend Andy's house.

Luigi's Mansion - I haven't noticed this, but some people say that if you take the Luigi's Mansion theme song and play it backwards at a certain speed, you'll hear "gravy gravy gravy" or something similar. Even wierder (if it's true).

Super Mario 64 - If you swim near the statue in Boo's Haunt, you can see a blurry texture that appears to say "L is real 2041" or a few other things.

Super Smash Bros. Melee - If you rotate Daisy's head just the right way, you'll notice...she has a third eye!

We know about those.

The most noticable would have to be in Wario World when you press pause and Wario says "nah nah nah nah nah!"

And all those sexual refrences about the Goomba chick in PM2.

How do you figure that when you distort sound and make it sound like something else, that makes it a subliminal message?

XD

Part of me thinks that Nintendo may put subarbysliminal messquiznossubsages in some games, but the other half wonders if people aren't just getting a little paranoid.  No offense because I think this too sometimes.  I look at things differently and think about them too much and soon everything appears like garbage.  There's one downside to thinking too much for me.

I downloaded the song Pipe Pop from DDR:MM and thought that the scambled voice talked about killing their dad or something.  But you'd think they wouldn't make it that easy to understand.  On a better note, I also noticed that in Here We Go, the letters M-A-R-I-O are spelled (before I thought it was E-I-E-I-O or A-E-I-O-U).

Okay, we all know that these happen to be true (Mabey not the gravy one.) But I don't think this is supposed to be evil. Some of them are honest mistakes, or weird glitches. Some jerk might have even put these in as a joke. Who knows, really.

Does this count as a subliminal message?

Title: Re: Subliminal Messages?
Post by: Glorb on December 31, 2005, 06:27:52 PM
No, it's vanishing. And, as it turns out, Nintendo is known for putting subliminal messages in their games. Why, just the other day, I was playing Mario 64 for the 453rd time, and by golly, I was subliminally persuaded to kill someone! Well, just to clear it up, here's a chart to expplain what all this means, with an example:

Subliminal: If, during a song, you hear someone say "A'dlanodcm tisiv", then that's a subliminal message.

Liminal: If, during a song, they say "visit McDonald's".

Superliminal: If they say "Hey you maggot, visit McDonalds!"

Ultraliminal: If someone pops out of the song, kicks you in the stomach, steals your wallet, and then drives you to McDonalds in your car. And then takes your car.
Title: Re: Subliminal Messages?

In a mall they use air conditioning as an sublimnal message (sort of)

if they want to sell summer clothes, they turn up the heat

winter clothes, turn on freezing temps
Title: Re: Subliminal Messages?

So? It's not like I buy clothes at the mall.

I heard a sound clip in MKDS that made me want to kill! It was... Daisy's voice, it made me want to kill Daisy.

I swear, I never notice any of these subliminal messages and hidden whatnots. The only time I noticed something almost like it was during Phantasy Star Online: Episodes I & II. Right before battling the last boss of Ep. II Olga Flow, he says something that almost sounds like "You killed my Goddess". I didn't even hear that until after reading about it on a message board. I was probably influenced by that though.

Dude, don't even say Luigi's Mansion. As much as I love the game, I don't need to hear about subliminal messages in it.

(Also how many posts do I need to start my own topics?)
Title: Re: Subliminal Messages?
Post by: CrzyFlmngMnkyHead on January 03, 2006, 04:49:14 PM
I've never heard of most of them. However, that 'L is real 2041' acutally reads 'The Eternal Star'. Also, why would Nintendo want to 'grant the kids to hell' or 'kill the kids'? That's something Disney would do.
Title: Re: Subliminal Messages?
Post by: BP on January 03, 2006, 05:46:31 PM
It is blurry, some people think it says either message. I personally think it says "L is real 2401." I think that, in the development stages when Luigi was intended to be in the game, but before all of his data was removed, this was a hint on how you would have unlocked him.
Title: Re: Subliminal Messages?
Post by: CrzyFlmngMnkyHead on January 03, 2006, 07:21:13 PM
OMG! The WW:T thing works. What creeps me out is, is this just coincedense? It would be amazing if the game programmers knew exactly where to place the words in the song and knew that if the song played at that speed it would say that disturbing phrase. Also, that 'third eye' that Daisy has, that's just a programming glitch.
Update: The last word of the phrase is 'help', not Hell (I grant the kids to help). Makes that much of a difference.
Title: Re: Subliminal Messages?
Post by: Chupperson Weird on January 03, 2006, 08:34:12 PM
Thinking people put backwards words in songs is stupid.
The plaque under the star doesn't say anything. If it said anything, it would be in Japanese. They don't bother to localize textures, especially ones that are too blurry to be read in any language.
Title: Re: Subliminal Messages?
Post by: BP on January 04, 2006, 02:47:49 AM
You know, that's true! I never thought of that before. But they didn't make much of an effort to remove it. If you move behind it, you can see text relatively the same as that in the 64 version. This could mean it's intentional, or the programmers want it to drive us insane.

Also, while on the topic of L not being real, did you see that black box on the castle wall on the file select screen that you don't see in-game?

My manager (when I worked at a supermarket) told me that they play songs by Kenny G and Yanni or whatever because supposedly they make you think of your family, therefore causing you to buy more food in order to feed more people.

Whenever I see the Shroobs speak Shroob in PiT, it creeps me out every time I stop because I get visions in my head that the Shroobs are telling me to kill loved ones. To me Shroobs speaking Shroob is a sublimianal message. (Well, they are cruel with the world domination thing and everything else.) Thank you for changing it BACK. And yes, that message was spooky.

This reminds me of the "Subliminal Messages" flash video. I won't spoil the ending, but as a result of it I lost all my urine for a while. If that makes sense.

God in Heaven........yikes, that scared me. I knew it was something like that, but I just had to see it. I've seen about a thousand of these, but the fact that a creepy dude was saying the Lord's prayer made it worse. I yelled "graggghhh," then knocked over a chair and tackeled my brother as if I was crazy.

EDIT: If anyone read this post before it was edited, could you tell that I was nervous? All those spelling errors and grammer mistakes........

It scared me so bad!!!! I was home alone too! I have been fearing it for the past three hours or so. I think I will be afraid to listen to music fast forwarded or backwards for a long time.

I remember watching The Thing, which I still find pretty chilling, as a little kid. The first few minutes, despite the presence of the actual Thing, scared the everliving crap outta me. Then I went to the kitchen during a commercial break (actually, when I was a kid, they had way fewer commercial breaks) and started eating some pizza. I was still scared to death when the Thing first appeared, but at least all the half-chewn-up pizza and assorted popcorn bits went on my sister and dad.

Title: Re: Subliminal Messages?
Post by: Glorb on May 27, 2006, 10:24:19 AM
In actuality, the pictures at the end aren't that scary when viewed up-close, but the sudden quick flash and scream are what make it frightening. I caught a freeze-frame of a few of the images:

A screenshot from Fatal Frame
A picture of a "Harlequin baby" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/harlequin_fetus) (a malformed baby with a skin disorder)
A skull

Among other things. The scream is so frightening because of two factors: 1 - Because the alleged "backwards Lord's Prayer" is so quiet, you turn the volume up to here the spooky noises in the background; 2 - It's very sudden - assuming you fell for the volume trick, the scream will be very loud and jarring, along with the freaky images.
Title: Re: Subliminal Messages?
Post by: PaperLuigi on May 27, 2006, 10:27:40 AM
I did not fall for the volume trick, but it was still scary, as the voice saying the Lord's Prayer was dark and.......well, scary!

By the way, the thread starter was right.  If you speed up Ashley's Theme on Warioware, she does say it.  She says "I grant all these kids to hell."  Try it; play the record player in the toy room and spin the record really fast with your stylus.  It is no glitch, mind you; she says it crystal clear.  If you do it fast enough, the music stops and she yells it out.

No creepy images or sudden screams, just strange coincidences (and stuff that was planned to be played backwards by curious listeners anyway).

There is this strange phenomenon dubbed "Dark Side of The Rainbow" by nerds where, if you play it right, The Wizard of Oz and Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon synch up in certain parts if you set the CD on loop and mute the movie. Pink Floyd didn't even intend it, but it happens.

In Earthbound snes the brickroad song is the drum sample from the Beatles "Sargent pepper's lonely hearts" song.
if you lower the pitch and remove vocals or listen closely you can hear them saying Sargent pepper's lonely hearts.
and in jackies cafe you can hear the national anthem.theres more I found like the wierd sonds when you enter your name.
also in paper mario the thousand year door when you battle a normal enemy open the gamecube lid (you can hear it better)
you hear kids saying i think "my guess is probably 189" or somthing like that.

The text is probably even more blurry. I remember seeing on another forum that someone ripped the texture from the ROM and discovered it really said 'landXYplayer'. Odd.

I think the "L is real 2041" thing has been done to death. It's not a subliminal message, nor does it really have anything to do with Luigi. Nintendo just did some blurry scribbles to make it look like a plaque of some sort. It means nothing. Whenever I look at it, I need to squint really hard, other wise it looks like just scribbles. Which is what it is.

I hate to bring this back up, but the supposed L is Real texture was also in Ocarina of Time.  That texture is the reason I first came to TMK and joined the forums.  I wonder if Deezer still has the email, or was it a post on the forums?  Hmmm.  Also, if the texture said something I would expect it would be in Japanese anyway.
