Title: Which SMB2?
Post by: DarthTedd64 on January 30, 2006, 07:22:39 AM
I'm wondering which game is more popular...
- The real Super Mario Bros. 2 (aka SMB2J), a game that is very similar to the original game, but is much harder and has poison mushrooms.
Or...
- A version of Doki Doki Panic that had Mario graphics substituted for the original graphics (SMB2US).

I like SMB2J better. I just think it's a better game, and it's a real Mario game. The other SMB2 just doesn't feel like Mario, it feels like another game with Mario graphics (which it is). Also, I was quite angry when I first learned that Nintendo only released the real game in Japan.

me too. i prefered the japan one cuz the smb2 here (called super mario USA) in japan, doesnt seem like a mario game. plus they basically "stole" the game from doki doki panic, cuz most of the enemy sprites were untouched, and the levels were the same. It wasnt really creative and seemed cheep for nintendo to hack and "steal" a game

Jap's better, but heaps harder. Mind you, SMB2 did give us Shy Guys, which are really fun... but I still say Japanese version rocks.

Oi...
It's not as though Nintendo mugged some guy on the streets, stole his game, and put Mario characters in it.  Doki Doki Panic WAS a Nintendo game, and Miyamoto had a larger involvement in it than the actual Japanese SMB2.

I'll vote for the US SMB2; it was always one of my favorites as a li'l-un.

SMB2US.

The other really is just a harder version of SMB and that's it.

The level designs for Doki Doki are incredible. Plus the screen moves up and down instead of just left and right.

US. Japan's is good, but way too hard. Not to mention the things we have today, like Shy Guys and Bob-Ombs thanks to it. SMB2USA is pretty funny, too--pull a vegetable out of the ground and throw it at a little animal. Then feed a giant toad vegetables until he dies.

I always wondered why the main enemy in Yoshi games were Shy Guys.

Anyway, I voted for the US version (without even reading the first post - at first I thought J was Doki Doki Panic and not "The Lost Levels", which is how I knew the real SMB2. Nintendo sure had a cool contest about who could reach World 9). And I do like SMB2 better than The Lost Levels. SMB2 did indeed give us Shy Guys and... um... those ninja star guys... and Birdo, can't forget him/her/it. I forget what gender I thought Birdo was when without the hairbowtie thing in the original NES game, probably female because of that pink color.

Mouser was annoying. The masks of vengeance (don't know what else to call them - they chase you as you make away with the key) were creepy. The slithering snake things in the desert world were cool. I didn't understand why back then the SMB2 Player's Guide had to be split into two books.

Are you sure Bob-ombs came from SMB2? If so... cool...

I remember the SMB2 NES box art. Looked a bit strange with a fat Mario carrying a turnip. SMB3 looked great with the simple yellow background and Raccoon Mario. I forget my reaction to SMB2, but I couldn't wait to play SMB3. Those were also the days when I was young enough for my parents to go buy random NES games they came across during the day. Their choices for games were no better than they are today. At least to Dino Riki's credit, it had a cool manual.

Shy Guys, Birdos, Bob ombs, Snifits, Pokeys, pow blocks, all originated from SMB2.

I liked both equally.

As you can see I'm not a big fan of playing favorites.

Japan version. It's WAY better. Plus it's not released in the US, because some people thinks it's hard (including big jumps, Bowser's clone in the middle of the castle, etc.).

Tho I think this is a silly topic I still chose SMB2(US) because I liked it better and you have no time limit which makes it easier.

Haven't played either, but I like SMB2(US) cause it's different from the traditional Mario game

Japan. No question. SMB2US is probably my least favorite mainstream Mario game up until, well, N64. SMB2J is what I was hoping SMB could be, difficulty-wise, and a few of the level designs are absolutely brilliant. (I'm talking about you, 8-2.)

I mean, ya, SMB2US had a few good levels (3-3 comes to mind), but it just seems... I don't know ... not Mario-esque? I mean, ya, Nintendo could've picked a MUCH worse game to sprite-swap than Doki Doki Panic, but still...

I personally like the difference SMB2US was from SMB. But whatever. I've never gotten as far as 8-2. Actually I'm not very good at either SMB2. XD

Super Mario Bros USA was my favourite game and I always prefered it to SMB 3 when I was little.

Now I started to play SMB USA and SMB3 again and I think that they are the best games ever made.

Phantos were scary!  Now they just increase adrenaline... not even, once you learn that throwing the key on the ground will make them disappear until you pick the key up again.  I guess I like SMB2US better, because it introduced new things, like all those new enemies that still appear, like shy guys and birdos.  SMB2J was alright, but it didn't offer much more than SMB.  It was more challenging, but as far as fun goes... it's a little less fun to me than SMB2US.  I also love both underground themes.

US. Without it, Yoshi wouldn't have a partner, There would be no Shy Guy, and many other things like that. It was also a change of pace.

Shy Guys, Birdos, Bob ombs, Snifits, Pokeys, pow blocks, all originated from SMB2.

POW Blocks originated in Mario Bros. arcade.

Oh wait yeah. Everything else was from SMB2 right?

I played SMB2 on Allstars and until TMK I never knew it wasn't a "real" Mario game. It made no differnce though since it has been remade better than the NES counterpart.

Plus SMB2 varies more than SMBJ, or Lost Levels.

US because it is easer.

I always liked SMB2US a lot even though it's really Doki Doki Panic. SMB2J (or Lost Levels) didn't really feel like a new game after SMB1 but more like an expansion. It sure is a great game though. If I had to destroy one of these games I'm afraid it'd be SMB2J so I pick SMB2US.

Um, coolkid, don't bump topics. Anyways, I like SMB2J a lot better because it feels more like a real Mario game, and it's also a lot more challenging and fun.

I never thought Nintendo "stole" anything when they made US-SMB2.  They didn't take anything from Doki-Doki Panic; it IS Doki-Doki Panic.  It's not like we're forced to think that DDP and US-SMB2 are entirely different games and that Nintendo made a cheap move by changing some sprites; think of them as the same game, but with different sprites in different countries.

If I'm not mistaken, Miyamoto worked more on DDP than SMB2J, correct?

Yes.....I think.

US version all the way.  I'm not influenced by nostalgia becuase I was introduced to both games at the same time (Super Mario All Stars) and SMB2J was good but SMB2US was better.
