Title: Why did you start liking Mario/Luigi games
Post by: neotev on May 04, 2006, 09:03:37 AM
I first started to like Mario when I was about 5 mainly the only reason I chose him was because he was the Red guy (Red's my favorite color). I continue to like him to this day is because he gives me confidence in myself. I am pretty much an outcast, and Mario isn't like any other hero. Hes a plumber a normal guy who ends up saving the Mushroom Kingdom and the girl.

Im just curious

A while ago I was first introduced, about 4 years old, I hadn't played it too much because my relatives in Chicago were the only ones I knew that had that game and at the time I lived in Texas, after a while I had my 10th birthday and got my first GameBoy Advance, and after my party I haggled a copy of Super Mario Advance for 15 bucks :), but even before that I was introduced to Wario in Wario Land 3 when all I had was a couple of GameBoy Colors, and I actually thought he was the villain of the game because of the way he looked.;).

Well, that's my story.

Because my brother introduced me to his NES when I was 2. Let's see, that was about... 15 years ago.

The first time I played a video game was when I was four-years-old. My brother had just got an SNES for his sixth birthday with a Super Mario World game. When I played it, I just loved it. My brother and I would take turns playing it with Mario & Luigi. It's funny because we never got passed the first level until four days later. We both kept running into the first koopa and dying. We were both like "...WTD? A turtle killed me!" After twenty tries, we tried jumping over him, and a whole new world opened to us... The world of The Mushroom Kingdom.

I started to like and play mario games at 5. Whe a relative of mine gaveus his SNES it had only one game (well 4 actualy) it had Super Mario All Stars. At the time i though it was boring, but when i played SMB 3. I really liked it! Whenever i got the tannoki sui i tought mario was a cat! lol, At age 6 I could beat all the levels ( exept level 8 airships). I try to teach my young cousings how to play. But they act more lik idiots with thier mouths open all the time watching a guy get hit by turtles or falling down pits. How come i learned and they don't?

Yoshi <3  Well, when I was little, back when I was intrigued with dinosaurs, one of my sister's boyfriends let me play SMW on his SNES, and I saw Yoshi, and instantly adored him.  I almost always play as Yoshi on the Mario Kart games.

The first game I ever REMEMBER playing was Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt.  It was pretty fun.
The second game I ever REMEMBER playing was Super Mario Brothers 3.  It was AWESOME!  I consider it to be the first masterpiece I have ever played, and it was the game that made me like Mario.

Let me see... I was either 4 or 5 when I was at the babysitter's place. They had a SNES. At first I never thought I'd be very good but I tried SMW anyway and beat the Donut Ghost House. I was instantly attached and asked my parents for a SNES of my own. Couldn't find SMW in stores (o_O, it was 1996 or 1997) so I got the closest thing: Super Mario All-Stars. Lucky me! When I first played it, my eye was caught by The Lost Levels and I played it. I got the Poison Mushroom.
And since then, I found TMK, aand a few years after I joined the Fungi Forums.

Huh. I think it was when I was 7 or so, and my best friend had SMB3 on SMA (Allstars). We played the game all night. I couldn't get enough of Luigi, so naturally, he became my favorite character.

To me, it's very simple.

Charm, challenge, and just plain fun.

The charming visuals won't be as charming as the games are challenging and fun at the same time.

Ah yes the first time I played a Mario game, how I rember it so well despite it being so many years ago. I was at a friends house with him and several other friends of ours. After we had come in from a game of soccer my friend showed us his SNES and two of his games, Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario World. We played them both to death, and the main reasons I lvoed them were that one, they were packed to the brim with action and explortion (something I know many young kids, teens and even adults crave) and two the chraming cast of colorful and crazy characters.  After that I begain to play all sorts of video games (including those featuring everyone's favorite black moustached plumber).

This are all very similar to how I got started too, I think my babysitter when I was like 3 or 4 brought her SNES over I distinctly remember Tetris and I think one of the Mario games. I have been hooked ever since.

Two words.

Mario Kart.

One of my favourite all-time games, and also one of my first. I never really got into video games at a younger age, and Mario Kart really stood out. :)

My uncle had a snes and Super Mario RPG, and I think that was the first game I ever played. I never was very good and didn't get even close to beating it. Then for my 6th or 7th birthday my parents rented a N64 and Super Smash Bros. I beat that in like 2 hours. That's when I became a fan.

When I was a wee lad I would watch my oldest sister, my parents and my relatives play Dr. Mario on the NES. They would also occasionally play Super Mario Bros. Then my sister convinced my parents to buy her an SNES and both Super Mario World and Super Mario All Stars. It wasn't that combo pack with both in one cartridge though but that's beyond the point. So basically I just watched them play as a tyke then gave it a try when I was like 4 or so. I seriously sucked in SMAS but I absolutely ruled in SMW. So it was at that moment that I became a life long Nintendo fan, though I wouldn't really realize this until sometime in 2001.

The world of video games was never opened to me until I went over to my neighbor's house.  At the time I was around five or six.  My neighbor was a couple of years older than I (though it seemed like a lot older at the time) and I always loved to watch him play Super Mario 64.  I would just stare into the screen in amazement, and was greatly entertained.  I think my favorite part was when you'd jump into a painting and hear that catchy little melody, and then click which star you'd look for in that level only to hear Mario say "Lets-a go!"  But it wasn't only that, but most of all the characters!  They were all so creative, and extremely different.  At the time, my favorite characters were Bowser (being so huge and awesome) and Toad (being so small and friendly).
And then my cousin got that Mario Paint game, and I became helplessly in love with the theme song. :-)
So, overall, I like the Mario games for the characters, the music, and the overall innocence.

My first exposure to Mario: SMW as mentioned on one of my preveous posts.  I was still very little, and it was just a casual experience (although when I was brainstorming a cartoon about a family of foxes living on an abandoned farm, I had the Forest of Illusion theme in my head).  The exposure that led me to become a diehard Nintendo fan was Mario Kart 64.  The young man who would later on become my brother-in-law had an N64, and he'd let me play Mario Kart.  Due to my past Mario experience with SMW, I'd always play as Yoshi.  In fact, MK64 was one of the first games I bought when I finally got an N64.

It all started waaay back when I was only two(I am NOT kidding) years old. My family had an NES with quite a few games on it. Each of my family members had a liking for one game in particular. For my mother, it was Tetris and Dr.Mario. For my grandfather, it was Donkey Kong Classics and Wrecking Crew. For my aunt, it was Super Mario Bros. 3. Whenever some one played, I sat next to them and watched. No matter who was playing, or what game thay were playing, I was mesmerized. I fell in love with it, yet somehow, I felt as though I was not ready to take the controller in my own hands......

...Then we got a Super NES.By then, I was 3.6 and I could no longer stand it. I grabbed that controller and preceeded to own all at Super Mario World. Ever since then, I became immersed in a world of wonderous gaming pleasure. From SM64 to SMS, and everthing in between, I was a true blue fan of The Super Plumber. Oh, and let's not forget about all those other franchise I was led into, shall we?

*rambles on about how he became a fan of all those other franchises that he's currently a fan of*

Nothing.  I started liking MArio games because I grew up playing it, and often when you're stuck with something for a long time, you like it, kind of like your family, even though they can shock and horrify you(like a surpisingly hard level of Super Mario 64!).

It was back when Best Buy had a lot of The Full Versions of many games that you could play there. I had just gotten a GameCube for Christmas and all I had were sports and some strategy games, and I was looking around for a good game to play and the GameCube game they had there was Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. I was just hooked on the game and I begged my dad to buy it for me. And he did, and that was the first Mario game I ever played, since then I've become a Mario Maniac, even so far as to do Super Wario Bros Sprites

When I was around 4 or 5 years old, my parents got my sister and I a Super NES to share, along with a few TV show/ movie games, and two Mario games (Yoshi's Island and Super Mario All-Stars) to grow on. I eventually received an N64 for my birthday and continued to grow on that. Once I grew older and more aware of the video games offered, I looked around at my choices.  There were either fun games that anyone can enjoy or violent games that are mostly about violence (which is the main reason I stuck with Nintendo/ Mario & Luigi games). I decided to stay close to what I knew best. And here I am today, a Mario/ Nintendo fanatic and loving it.

I remember when my dad bought my brother amd I a Nintendo 64 on one of the first days it came out. We bought Mario 64 along with it, and I'd guess that's where my gaming hobby started.

It was pretty funny, because I wasn't that old then, and I had to get my dad to beat the boss battles with Bowser or maybe even a whole level if my brother or I couldn't accomplish it.

I even remember being frightened by a few enemies. XD

I actually didn't get an NES until some number of years later. We payed one dollar for it, and it works fine.

Well, I guess the first occurence was when I was about twelve.  I was surfing the internet until I found a site with various Mario fan art and game info(not this site).  At the time I had no idea it was Mario.  By the time I found out, I panicked.  It couldn't be Mario, it just seemed so wrong.  But I continued to look on, against my better judgement, and realized that it just felt so right.  I can recall countless nights I spent crying in bed, thinking, "I can't be a Mario fan, I just can't!"  I was horrified that my parents or friends would find out, and I tried to hide my feelings of delight when I'd shoot down multiple goombas in succession with fireballs.

Finally, the next year I told one of my friends.  She and I were just walking until it burst right out of me.  I started to run away, but I heard her call after me.  I just ran around a corner and sat on the ground, crying.  She found me right away and just held me.  I tried to tell her everything, but I don't think she even understood half of what I was saying, she just kept hugging me and telling me that it was alright.  I felt like a giant weight was lifted off my shoulders, being there with her.  After what must have been an hour, she confessed that she was a Mario fan too.  She explained that there was nothing wrong, as far as she could tell, with jumping a few goombas and ducking through warp pipes.

Finally, I had a friend to talk to about our offbeat enjoyment.  But it wouldn't last long, as she told me that she was going to a different high school than I'd be going to the next year.  I felt alone again.  Before she left, on the last day of elementary school, I stood up and came out to everybody.  I had witnessed my friend being jostled by some meaner kids as she tried to play her Game Boy, and I couldn't take it anymore.  I stood atop the lunch table, and shouted out my true video game-based orientation.  There was a shocked silence..  My friend stood up and took my hand.  I pulled her up onto the table, and for second we gazed into each other's eyes.  Then, briefly, we kissed.  Everyone applauded.  It was the best day of my life.

After that, I decided that I wouldn't care what others felt about my enjoying a good Mario game from time to time.  If they didn't like how I lived my life, then they could just mind their own business.  I made lots of friends in high school who accepted me for who I am, and judging by the letters my old friend sends me, she's making true friends too.  I know that God loves me, no matter what game system I use, and I am happy.

It was destiny that is my reason, but my favorite and all ways will be my favorite character of the Mario World is....none other than Luigi. Luigi has allways been my favorite and will continue being my favorite character.

For me, it all starts when my father got Yoshi's Island: Super Mario World 2 for the SNES. I was about three or so and when he played a Mario game (he also had a few others including SMW, SMAS and SMK), I was in love with all the colorful scenery and all the cute charcters (Yoshi being my favorite at the time). I (by mistake) actually crawled up to the SNES and pressed the eject button. Now keep in mind that I was about three-ish and I didn't have a lot of knowlege about electronic devices. Now lets go forward in time to the N64 release and SM64. That was when I fell truly in love with the Mario Universe. When I was looking at it, it felt like that it was almost excatly like our world (only pixelated and more colorful). We got an N64, but my father got some Star Wars Pod-Racing game, but fear not, we also got Mario Kart 64 a few months later. My mother played as Mario and my father played as Luigi (this tradition still continues to this day) and I usually played (during the late 90's time period) as Yoshi or Princess Peach (I also had a thing for the color pink), but I mostly played as the princess, Yoshi came later. It was then I got my first Mario bean bag doll (Luigi) at a dollar store (later on I'd get Yoshi, Mario and Bowser). Later on, we also got Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Mario Party (1,2 and 3), Paper Mario and Super Mario 64. It was getting SM64 and Paper Mario that really brought me into the Mario World because playing them gave me so much enjoyment. Also we (at times) connected the SNES to the television set and when my friends were over, we'd sometimes play the SNES; taking turns on playing SMW and Yoshi's Island (sadly at this time, we lost SMK for some reason, but we still had that Mario spirit). Into the 21st century, I was becoming more and more into Mario and the world he lived in. When I got my Gamecube, I got Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Mario Sunshine. I got Mario Party (4, 5, 6 and 7), Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Super Mario Strikers, Mario Superstar Baseball, Mario Power Tennis, Luigi's Mansion and Wario World. Also at this time, I got my GBA (I actually begged to my parents for it) and Super Mario Advance. I've aslo collected the other Mario games for it. Into the years of the Nintendo DS, when I got it on Christmas, I enjoyed playing SM64DS to the brink and every Mario game that I hear about now, I make sure that I get my money and get it.

...And that's my story, but Mario also got me into playing Animal Crossing and my tradition of playing as Peach or Yoshi has been changed into playing as any of the other charcters. It's true, you fall deeper in love as you go along in life.
