Title: X3: Love it or Leaf It? *Spoiler Klaxon
Post by: TEM on May 29, 2006, 10:28:10 AM
SPOILERS!!!! TURN BACK NOW PETTY HUMAN

<Chup|inert> so TEM
<Chup|inert> hast thou seen the X3
<Chup|inert> ?
<TEM> Yeah
<TEM> I was pretty dissappointed
<TEM> Let me tell you why
<TEM> 1. The movie was almost completely action and event oriented
<Chup|inert> that was its main detractor for me too
<Chup|inert> however I still liked it
<TEM> I felt like the writers had characters appearing and dieing or losing powers just to keep it interesting
<TEM> Character development and/or interest was pretty much zero for me
<TEM> reason number 22222
<Chup|inert> hopefully they'll get a better director for the next one
<TEM> The main character was no longer
Wolverine
<TEM> He's always been the most interesting character, and shifting the silver screen focus away from him was dangerous
<Chup|inert> hmm
<TEM> Although from the ending of X2 they could hardly help that, so I don't blame that on the movie makers
<TEM> It was still a problem, though
<TEM> REASON thr33
<TEM> Although this wasn't really a big problem, I didn't like
<TEM> it
<TEM> major design incontinuity for the Phoenix
<TEM> In X2, whenever Jean had a super telekinetic flash, her eyes burned
<TEM> When the lake overtook her, she burst into flames
<Chup|inert> yeah
<TEM> At the very end, you saw the large, fiery phoenix under the lake
<TEM> But, in X3, they made her look like what I imagine the Blair Witch did
<Chup|inert> hooheh

As you can plainly see, I will be voting "Didn't Like It". It would be very interesting to know everyone else's opinion on this movie; please give detailed reasons for why you voted either way.

It didn't start out with a Patrick Stewart monologue. -- BAD
Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen make it good no matter what. -- GOOD
Too much Storm -- BAD
Beast -- GOOD
Angel had no point -- BAD
TEM is wrong. Wolverine was the main character. -- NEUTRAL
All original X-Men in the movie -- GOOD
Pheonix not firey -- BAD
Iceman vs. Pyro -- GOOD, but short
New Brotherhood members all being punk -- BAD
"I'm the Juggernaut, b#$%^!" -- AWESOME, if in reference to the internet video, not the other way around. I don't know the cause/effect here.
Ending -- GOOD

I am easy to please in games and movies and can appreciate most things. I overall enjoyed the film and voted Yes.

According to a friend of mine at work, Juggernaut's line was indeed a reference to the Internet video.

The main thing I didn't like about the movie was everyone's incredibly overblown powers. It just seemed like they didn't know where to stop.
The story was pretty decently done. Although, Magneto went a little nuts in this one. I agree with TEM that there was too much action.

I think all the "punk" mutants were supposed to be the Morlocks, so that was good in my book.
I also really liked how far developed the situation was. Mutants everywhere, government agency to "deal" with mutants, and angry mobs of mutants protesting things. These were good.
Overall I enjoyed it.

"TEM is wrong. Wolverine was the main character. -- NEUTRAL"

He was one of the main characters, but I don't think he was THE main character.

What's the difference from how it was in 1 and 2, in regards to Wolverine?

Who sets off Phoenix? Who watches Xavier die? Who stops Phoenix?

That kind of points out my "all action" argument right there.

Anyway his own personal story has nothing to do with the movie. He does stuff, sure, but nothing has to do with him besides his powers. I'm not considering his "emotional struggle" with trying to help/killing Jean because that was so poorly done I almost couldn't watch it. His feelings toward Jean in this movie are completely unconvincing.

Next there's going to be a movie all about Wolverine, so stop whining. It's called "Wolverine".

Yawn. Bring on "Magneto"!

Yes, I believe I am awaiting "Magneto" with much more anticipation.

...You know, this will surely lead to "Wolverine vs. Magneto" in which Maggie holds Wolverine in various contorted midair positions for 90 minutes.

The movies starts with TWO flashbacks, one of which deals with a major storyline and the other of which deals with a ridiculously minor storyline - BAD
The Beast fights with the X-Men even though they never explain what actual powers, if any, he has other than lookin' all blue - BAD
Ugly sets - BAD
No story - BAD
Cheap (1st) ending that is an obvious set-up for a sequel - BAD
Cool (2nd) ending that would be an obvious set-up for a sequel except many people didn't even see it - GOOD
Rogue chooses to no longer be a mutant - GOOD

Final verdict: BAD

Beast is smart, tough, and agile. What more do you need to know?

I thought the way Beast fought at the end of the movie was one of the most well done things in the picture, they captured his unique swinging/jumping/tossing style perfectly.

Edit: Also, they do show Beast sitting on the ceiling of his office briefly; so the audience is aware that there is something else going on besides blue fur.

Maybe they did capture the essence of Beast perfectly, but I've never read the comics or seen the cartoons so I wouldn't know.  To me he just seemed very agile and dexterous.  These are sort of boring powers, since many of the mutants showed ridiculous dexterity and agility in addition to their genuinely superhuman powers.  I think the character would have been more interesting (though possibly less canonical) if his mutation was purely aesthetic.

If his mutation was just blue fur, then it would be completely non-canonical, because in the comics he was just an unusually large, agile human until he drank a potion to reduce his increasing animalistic appeartance, but instead became blue and furry.

He apparently drank the potion between X2 and X3, judging by the not furry Hank McCoy on the news in X2. Or else that was someone else named Hank McCoy.

I was having a debate. In the first flashback, who lifts up the cars, Xavier, Eric, or Jean?

Phoenix

EDIT: Did Kelsey Grammer play furless Beast in X2?

No.

I think you mean Jean lifted the cars; the Phoenix personality hadn't been created yet.

Probably the Hank McCoy from X2 was just a cameo type deal to make hardcore fans go, "Hey, Beast!". Maybe they weren't planning to include him as a major character as of then.

Yeah, Jean lifts the cars.
