Donkey Kong Jr. was one of the 10 free NES Virtual Console games released early only to Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors. The 3DS Ambassador game lineup also included appearances by Mario in NES Open Tournament Golf, Super Mario Bros., Wrecking Crew, and Yoshi.

Though the 10 NES VC games for 3DS Ambassadors were scheduled to be released worldwide on September 1, 2011, they were available for download in North America and Japan a day earlier.

The standard release of Donkey Kong Jr. on the eShop was April 18, 2012 in Japan and June 14, 2012 in North America.

Club Nintendo offered Donkey Kong Jr. as a reward from February 10, 2014 through March 9, 2014. Members could exchange 150 Coins for a download ticket, which was only redeemable on the Nintendo 3DS from the Nintendo eShop.
