Overview

All Night Nippon, a popular radio station in Japan, raffled off a few thousand copies of this interesting version of Super Mario Bros. sometime in 1986. The first thing you'll likely notice is that some graphics were taken from Japan's Super Mario Bros. 2, but a few things were changed to go along with the All Night Nippon theme. The Goombas and Piranha Plants have been replaced by bespectacled, big-headed creatures. Microphones replaced the mushrooms in the background, and the Fujisankei logo adorns the flag raised from the castle when Mario reaches a flagpole. (Fujisankei owns Nippon Broadcasting, which runs All Night Nippon.) A slighty bigger version of said logo also is in place of the axe that sits behind each Bowser. By far, the most interesting change is that the seven Mushroom Retainers and Princess Toadstool were replaced by people who are supposedly Japanese celebrities.

In addition to borrowing some graphics from Japan's SMB2, its game mechanics also came with; for the most part, the tricks that worked in SMB2(J) work in ANNSMB. And just like in Japan's SMB2, you can choose to start the game with either Mario or Luigi (Luigi jumps higher, but his shoes have less traction). The other interesting thing about ANNSMB is the level setup. The majority of the levels are reminiscent of Vs. Super Mario Bros. (the arcade version of SMB), but six levels were imported from Japan's SMB2 -- 5-3, 5-4, 6-4, 7-2, 7-3, and 8-4, plus Worlds A - D on top of all that. Unfortunately, the game doesn't have a World 9; beating 8-4 without warping takes you back to the title screen.
