As far as I and Google are aware, CCR never recorded a version of "American Woman". Most likely you downloaded an incorrectly-labelled version, methinks.

This website tells me the version that I knew has infact been the CCR version.

Lyric sites are notorious for misattributing songs. Searching for CCR's supposed version of "American Woman" only turns up results from file-sharing sites which also think AC/DC sang "Born To Be Wild" and Bob Marley recorded "Don't Worry, Be Happy".
