Not sure if anyone remembers me, but I was super active wayyy back in the day, under the name of Meowrik/Meowrio before changing over to this username. Spent a good chunk of my junior high years on this message board. That was like ten years ago...
My fiance and I spent last night looking up old Livejournal/Myspace/etc posts to show one another how dorky we used to be, and part of my showing was looking up my earliest posts on this site. I figured I'd drop in and say hello again, see who's around. But it appears to be a ghost town. I guess specific message boards can't survive in the year 2014 :(

For anyone who cares, I'm 25 now, engaged, and am working as a medical lieutenant/EMT at the fire department. I DO have a 3DS as well as a Wii U, and SM3DW and DK:TF were fantastic. That's about it.

I remember when you came back the first time!

I don't typically post here without someone else prompting a response, though I remember when I used to trying really hard to come up with good topics to start on; that didn't happen a lot... or at all? But I mean, you've been gone for a while, so naturally you already understand why people would take breaks from it. I stopped being a frequent poster because I realized that if I said literally everything on my mind here, it would led to me driving people insane (I know, I used to do it), and I don't really care to get kicked out of the first memorable message board I ever joined. I can't really speak for everyone here, but "real life" kind of takes priority for me now, and I've lost the close relationships I've had with the people I like especially here. It's easier to be friends with people you can talk to everyday, which is basically where I'm at in my life to not be as active here anymore. I am in the leader boards for "most time spent online" here (I think? It's been a while since I checked), which at this point I'm leaning more toward that being sad than cool.
I'm a horrible person.

Hey I remember you! Kind of.. I've been here for almost 10 years, but I did lurk a bit before that. I thought message boards were stupid before that point.

Anyway, yeah, the forums are definitely not as active as they used to be. But there are still a few good topics and users about.

Glad to hear you're doing well. :)

I think that has to do with the fact that we don't really have any newbies anymore for two reasons.

The first reason has to do with the state of the internet. Back in the last decade (Yes, I mean the early to mid '00s in specific), the internet wasn't as widespread yet as it is now, so people made the best of their privilege, going on tons of forums to talk about vidya games with their fellow dudes and dudettes. Nowadays, most people (that live in places where internet isn't a rare commodity) have internet, so it's not really special anymore. (That's a bad way of conveying my point, sorry.) You can just talk about video games with some people on Facebook, or YouTube, or Tumblr or whatever you kids use. It seems like actual discussions on the internet nowadays mostly only take place now in comment sections. Forums just aren't popular anymore.

The second has to do with the state of Nintendo now. Back in the early-to-mid '00s, video game journalists largely ignored Nintendo (except for a couple games, and maybe when it came to handhelds) to focus on the Xbox and especially the PS2. I remember being particularly alienated in elementary school by G4 (X-Play in particular), which didn't show much for the GameCube at all. Nintendo fans sorta had to "stick together" during rough times, and congregate to talk about Mario and stuff. Now, Nintendo and Mario are popular again (though the former seems to be wading thanks to lackluster sales performance of the Wii U, the latter doesn't only because of increasing reliance on "retro 8 bit nostalgia" these days), so who needs to use some old forums on "themushroomkingdom.net"?

I realize that some of this stuff about the sixth gen is perhaps a bit before my time, but remembering how disappointed I was watching X-Play and seeing yet another episode entirely with PS2 and Xbox stuff even though I only had a GameCube helps me learn and understand. Basically, I think that because of the changes that vidya culture and internet culture have undergone, Fungi Forums are perhaps..."dated", you could say. Not that that's a bad thing; I may be in high school during the age of twitgram and youbook, but I'll take message boards focused on a central topic any day.

G4 was a joke. Their constant jabs at Nintendo made it a pain to watch. I could barely stand the one part of.. I think X-Play I watched. They were "reviewing" one of the Metroid Prime games. Review in quotes because they loosely did reviews. Instead they would pick up on some little thing in the game and run with trying to make a joke out of it.

I did attempt to watch G4 one more time when the Wii was launched, but it too was a disaster. I don't care to remember his name, but one of the guys kept wondering where the "Nintendo Revolution" was, and why Nintendo kept trying to introduce a system known as Wii (which he annoyingly kept pronouncing as "Wheeeeeeeee").

I started to wonder if the network was sponsored by Sony or Microsoft, because of all the jabs at Nintendo..

Aw, dude, that reminds me of this video parodying the Nintendo Revolution's name change. It had the Wii with a mouth superimposed over it while it did a stupid laugh.

That's a good point. The internet was more pick and choose back in the good old days. Specific, specialized sites were the norm, whereas now everyone goes to big aggregate sites like IGN, Kotaku, GameFAQs, etc... And definitely social networking has sorta put a damper on forums especially.

If anyone remembers Trainman, I still keep in touch with him as well. Good to see a few familiar faces around here though!

I think the older Mario fans (and users of this board) are getting to a point in life where they're too busy to poke around on a Mario message board and younger fans aren't coming in at a replacement rate. Then there's what TheMightyThor brought up: Kids today have so much forms of entertainment to choose from . Besides videog ames and iOS games and what not, there's skype, and Twitch, and Youtube. Probably other things I'm not hip enough to know about, even. If Mario is still bringing in the kiddies at a high rate, then they seem to be congregating somewhere else. If Mario isn't bringing in the kiddies, then the truth is far too horrible to contemplate. : (

Yeah, what is it with the Pizza Hut out here? The Pizza Hut franchise in WAGA-NIPPON (Japan) is also a sad affair, largely thanks to having bowed to the irrational demand for mayonnaise on pizza.

Also, hello again Forest Guy, sorry I'm late to the party.

....? Who thought that that was a good idea? Just thinking about it makes my stomach turn.

Speaking of failed pizza experiments, I recently had "hamburger pizza." Featuring mustard and catsup as sauce and small pieces of ground beef and American cheese as toppings, Hamburger pizza wins the blue ribbon of disgusting food mashups. My guess is that mayo pizza is not much better.

The Pizza Hut pizza isn't disgusting, just not great. No unusual ingredients. I hate the small fake bakeries they have (I call them fakeries). They will make mini-pizzas with ketchup instead of proper pizza sauce. My girlfriend doesn't understand the difference between Italian tomato-based sauces and ketchup. I'm actually going to show her tonight with some homemade spaghetti and a jar of pasta sauce.

With Forest Guy's personal update I kind of wonder what everyone is doing in life now?

I'm a Chemistry student in my second year of university. I don't play video games as often anymore, but in the gaming world I'm still a Nintendo fan first and foremost. (I'm also learning Japanese because of my love of Japanese stuff, which started with Nintendo!)

I wasn't around for as long or as much as the rest of you were, but this still feels like my internet home and I get twinges of nostalgia every time I check back here.

Ahh, I always pop in late to these little reunion parties.

I imagine, or at least hope, most people who were here back during the FF's gilded age have somewhat calmed down and lost their "oh lulz you're pretty much stupid" attitudes by now, myself included.

Anyway, that's neither here, nor there. I've been alive, and doing quite well. If you were keeping track back then, things in my own life weren't too great when I left. I needed to fix quite a bit, and I did!

Back during the start of my leaving the forum, I did check in from time to time, because it was still habit for me. Eventually it left my mind to come here. I do recall seeing one post mentioning that I was actually banned from the forum, and another one saying I literally asked to be banned to make my exit more permanent. That was pretty far from the truth, as I was pretty apathetic. I left, and stopped posting. Then a ban was added, and later removed. Plain and simple.

So...yup. I returned to college not long after leaving. Then I transferred to another college, majored in music, and got my degree. I left New York not long after...actually, I left the country.

You could probably take a good stab at where I live now, since I claimed I'd want to move there one day. And I did. I live in one of the southern areas of Japan now.

Actually, this is the second time I'm living in Japan. Back in 2011 I did a study abroad in Shizuoka, similar to what our old friend Watoad did back when he was in college. On top of that I got to visit both Tokyo and Kyoto. I wanted to make an unexpected appearance on the FF with a photo of me standing in front of Nintendo Co. Ltd., but since NCL's just an office and not much else, I ended up not going there.

So, living on my own now, working a salaried job, doing the adult life thing.

Welcome back!
Thanks. I'd say my personal situation is miles ahead of what it was when I was here last, figuratively and literally.

Watoad, Suffix and now Vid all live in Japan. And TEM lives in China.
Watoad DID live in Japan, on at least two occasions. I don't know if he currently lives here now, though. I remember asking him for some tips back before my trip to Shizuoka.

I couldn't afford those. :(

I'll be totally honest, my original interest in moving to Japan was fueled by video games and anime, and seeing Watoad be able to travel there only made me want to go even more.

During my little dark period, the interest waned to almost nothing, because I saw my life wasn't really going anywhere. And seeing other people in the same boat as me didn't help matters. Not until I transferred to my second college was my interest re-invigorated. I was able to take Japanese classes, and the opportunity to study abroad also came up. The little barrier that prevented me from going very far from home was finally broken. In Shizuoka I learned more about the culture and got to experience so many different things that had nothing to do with my original interests.

When I returned to New York I felt that moving here for a longer period was a very good idea. So, I did just that. Finished my degree, found employment and moved here. The interest in moving to Japan was no longer based on video games and anime, but the culture and customs of the people, as well as the experiences I simply can't have anywhere in the States for one reason or another.

It's been just about half a year since I set up shop here. I originally planned on buying a Japanese Wii U and 3DS, but...why. Especially when downloading from the eShop and buying games online from Amazon are things.

Jeez.

Advice Dog's influence extends beyond other Advice Animals. If you do a Google Image Search for "memes",* practically every single image is one that wouldn't exist were it not for TEM's creation.

*Doing this will also kill your soul

I wonder if this was inspired by TEM's picture:

I name-drop TEM even when the conversation isn't on Advice Dog.

Hi Trainman! Hope all is well -- Great post there. I still check the Forums daily but I don't often post. It's pretty cool to see all of the old users coming back every so often just to check up on the place.

Thanks for reminding me of the secret page! That place changes about as much as the forums these days.

Let's crowdfund a statue.

A statue wouldn't be bad, but a pizza trophy would be way better. TEM has mentioned "pizza" in ten separate posts, after all.*

Don't be too jelly, but I've touched the actual dog.

I'm also credited as the first "spread" on the Know Your Meme page although they got the name of the YTMND wrong. It also repeatedly calls Markio "Mariko".

I'm glad that I either wasn't around or decided I had nothing to contribute to that thread... because it would have been a post by 14-year-old me, nobody wants one of those to be located that close to the source of the mother of all the memes where everybody would want to go and see

Oh man, I remember being... I think in the chatroom, when that "Happy Pup" TYMND was made.

I'm kind of in the same boat as you, there, BP. 2006-me was not a wise child.

Sure it can. It will. Everyone will die. The earth will burn in the sun. TMK isn't gonna survive that. If you think we're going to pack up and move to another planet when things are at their worst, forget it--space travel is never gonna be that feasible and even if we had all the resources to make that work and sustain people for however long it'd take to find another habitable planet, the republicans will never let it happen. And even if they did,

It'd be interesting (and too time-consuming, probably) to put together a graph comparing the frequency of posts in that thread with the overall post frequency of some of the forum members who remain active.  Or with the top ten or twenty posters by number of posts.

Back when I would cruise the forums, Lizard Dude would Rick-roll people, and it was funny as heck.  Also, I had no idea about Advice Dog making history before my very eyes.  That was just another fun thread in a sea of many.
Today's actually... nobody's birthday!  Quick, hurry up and make a baby!
