I hope this poll isn't too polarizing.

Video Game Chat / War Games
« on: September 07, 2008, 03:07:42 PM »
Is it just me, or does anyone else find some war-based FPSes...disconcerting? I speak of the ones that claim to be realistic and such, and yet still have stuff like regenerating health, respawns, and the ability to turn friendly fire off. Real-life soldiers don't just wait for their vision to stop turning red after being shot; they get to a medic, and probably die. If a WWII or Iraq-based game were truly realistic, you'd never be able to save or load, or play the game at all after you die. A truly realistic war game would be more akin to survival horror than an FPS.

I made this topic because I recently re-saw Saving Private Ryan and thought how completely sanitized Call of Duty and Medal of Honor are in comparison. It's disturbing to me how an actual war can be made into a game. I realize this sounds hypocritical coming from someone who plays FPSes with some regularity, but that's how I feel.

General Chat / Rickpoll

So, yeah. How many times have you been Rickrolled, if you've been keeping track? I'm slightly gullible, so I'm estimating I'm in the 10-19 range.

General Chat / Fanfiction
« on: July 13, 2008, 11:33:22 PM »
I've never liked fanfiction, for several reasons.

1) It's basically a crutch for writers who can't take five minutes to think up a plot, story, or characters themselves, and so they rip off better writers of TV shows, games, etc. It's a step away from plaigarism, which is just lazy.

2) When new characters ARE created, they're almost always always combinations of two or more characters, the offspring of two or more characters, or glorified versions of the author.

3) 90% of it seems to be of the erotic and Sonic the Hedgehog variety.

Of course, that's just my biased, skewed view of the matter. I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts.

Video Game Chat / Miles Edgeworth: Perfect Prosecuter
« on: July 09, 2008, 11:05:06 PM »
That's not the confirmed title, but it needs to be.

So, I'm sure a few people have heard of the new Ace Attorney game starring Edgeworth (I forget the working title), since it was announced like forever ago. And it looks pimp. I'm not in the habit of getting games as soon as possible (I like to wait for them to get cheaper), but I'm preordering this as soon as I get the chance. While I doubt playing prosecuter will be vastly different from being a defense attorney (as a D.A. in the main series, you almost always end up proving a witness's guilt anyway), the new third-person King's Quest-style investigation gameplay looks awesome, and rather Law & Order-like. Edgeworth is the secnd-coolest video game character of all time (behind Master Chief), so I can't wait to get my hands on this.

Video Game Chat / Rock Band 2
« on: July 08, 2008, 05:32:39 PM »
I was informed today of the existance of RB2. As much as I love Harmonix, it looks like they're taking the Neversoft approach, which consists of taking features from the competing game and making them bigger (the only exception being the lack of create-a-song mode). This puts the average buyer (i.e., one without millions of dollars to spend on music games and peripherals) in quite a tough spot. Do you buy Rock Band 1 or 2? Or do you buy GH:WT? Each one is likely to cost exorbitant amounts of money, and the peripheral sets are quite different (especially the drums), so you can't simply buy four peripherals and a copy of each game (well, the RB instruments will be compatible with each other, at least).

But there's the issue of: is a sequel really necessary? I consider Rock Band a perfect game in that it sets out to do a certain thing and succeeds in every field imaginable, so why not just keep releasing songs? The only way I can find this acceptable is if Harmonix makes the downloadable songs compatible with both games (it would suck to be forced to play one song on one game only), and I'm not sure that's feasible.

I'm sure info has changed by now, so feel free to correct me on whatever.

Video Game Chat / Portal Awesomeness
« on: June 29, 2008, 08:38:27 AM »
I recently got off my lazy butt and finally did the Portal/HL2 trick (wherein you can use the Portal gun in Half-Life 2 to sneak up on Combine and such), and it really got me thinking. How awesome would it be to have the ASHPD fully integrated into HL2:E3 - where ragdolls, bullets, grenades, enemies, everything can pass through? Hardly an original thought, but still. Then I really started thinking:

What if the Portal gun were integrated into other, completely different styles of play?

Think of stealth games, and body management. Instead of stuffing bodies into lockers, you could just place a portal above a dumpster fifty feet away, and another one below the body, and let gravity do the rest without the need to drag it everywhere. Then, maybe, transport the dumpster to an entirely different location. What about sneaking up on a guard in a highly guarded area, grabbing him, and then taking him to a deserted area in a completely different building to interrogate? The possibilities are endless.

Or maybe an open-world, GTA-style game? Imagine being chased by cops, and then driving your car through a portal and into the other side of the city? Bank-robbery, racing, and escort missions would become a breeze. Of course, seeing as how those are the three most common mission types in GTA, that's probably why this'd never happen.

I realize these aren't original ideas, and this is pretty old news (Portal came out in '07), and I'm sure far awesomer possibilities exists if you stretch your brain enough (what about having three portals, and the ability to fire portals through other portals?), but I felt the need to start a topic for this.

General Chat / Friday the 13th

That's today, in case anyone's wondering. I also just learned Tim Russert (the news guy) died today; while I don't think there's a connection, it is a little eerie with all the people who've died on this day.

Video Game Chat / Phase
« on: June 01, 2008, 07:28:50 PM »
Anyone here have the game Phase on their iPod (assuming you have an iPod)? I just got it, and it's seriously cool. It's made by Harmonix, and in case you're wondering, it's more Frequency/Amplitude than Guitar Hero/Rock Band. The controls are a little touchy on the cramped scroll wheel, but otherwise gameplay is smooth. Some songs I found way harder than I expected when played. I expected Aerodynamic by Daft Punk, Cochise by Audioslave, and Colossal by Wolfmother to be quite easy, but they both handed me my butt, at least on Expert. A few songs I expected to be brutally difficult ended up being rather easy; Sleep Now In The Fire by Rage Against the Machine is an example.  Anyway, it's great fun, and I recommend it to anyone with a compatible iPod.

Game Help / Half-Life 2 - All-Knowing Vortigaunt
« on: May 30, 2008, 07:44:46 PM »
This is my first Game Help topic, and I'd like to figure out how to do something that's been nagging at me for a very long time. How do you get at the "All-Knowing Vortigaunt" in the airboat segment in HL2? I've seen videos that make it look easy, but I can't get the technique down. Any specific advice?

A disturbing thought has occured to me: there aren't nearly enough toilet threads on this board. So here you go.

General Chat / The Andromeda Strain

Anyone else interested in this remake? I've been a sucker for ARGs lately (specifically the more passive ones), what with Cloverfield and all, so I become intrigued after seeing this in a commercial on A&E. My first thought was "A Birds remake?" because of the shots of birds eating a dude's body, but I digress.

General Chat / An Unsettling Discovery

A while ago, I was eating a bowl of SpaghettiOs, when I noticed a small amount of the sauce that had been on the table a minute before. Not one to waste delicious food, I scooped it up with my finger and tasted it. Much to my chagrin, it tasted of blood. Now, the table's surface had been clean beforehand, and I quickly checked to see if I had been tasting a cut on my finger or a mouth injury. I tasted it again, and, yes, blood. So I preformed an experiment. I took a small amount of SpaghettiOs sauce, put it in a bowl, and let it turn cold. When I tasted it, it tasted like blood. SO, SpaghettiOs sauce, when chilled and in small quantities, tastes like blood.

This has led me to conclude that the secret ingredient in SpaghettiOs is people.

Forum Games / Guess That (Movie) Poster!
« on: February 11, 2008, 03:50:23 PM »
Well, it had to happen. Basically, one person posts a picture of a movie poster with the title obscured, and another person tries and guesses it. This first one should be pretty easy.
