Video Game Chat / Re: Games you hope to find on Virtual Console
« on: April 01, 2008, 12:52:11 AM »
I hated the Test of Strength because I'm not a fast button tapper. It takes me a few tries to get into the zone where my finger twitches rapidly enough (and I nearly kill my finger in the process) in order to do it. Had to do that focusing to unlock the secret battle stages in Bomberman 64 without getting all the gold cards. Had to unfortunately repeat that trick here. Someone suggested some tape and something else to rapidly tap the button for you, a way of cheating, but at face value that technique looked ridiculous. Never tried it.
Yeah, everybody proposes these crazy methods involving waving your thumb joints or spoons or sticks or rubber bands over the button a certain way, but they never helped me beat the third Canary Mary race in Banjo-Tooie.  At least the fourth race has some strategy to it, but my brother only beat the third race once on some sort of fluke.  That'll probably be our only 100% file for that game.  There should be a law or something against button-mashing challenges.

Yeah, why IS Nintendo dragging its feet on online features for its console games, anyway?  Maybe that deserves its own topic.

Mario Chat / Re: BEST IN SERIES? Week 9: Intro
« on: April 01, 2008, 12:18:39 AM »
I know all Mario 64 did was show us a cryptic letter about the Princess inviting Mario to the castle for some cake
That's actually what I liked about it: It gives you a little story and builds up your anticipation, but it doesn't drag on for too long like most games that came after it.  When I press "Start Game", I expect to be actually playing the game pretty soon, not watching a stupid 5-minute movie!  So that's why I'm picking Super Mario 64 for now.  (By the way, I still disagree that Mario was his full Super size in that game, but I'll save it for later...)

I also liked Super Mario Bros. 2 USA's intro for its colorful title screen (a shame they got rid of the blue background later), its happy music inspired by the water level theme, and actually giving you the story in-game for once rather than forcing you to find the manual to learn it, despite leaving out the other three characters.  Super Mario Bros. 3 was also great for doing some funny stuff with its game characters on the title screen.

Honorable mention goes to the demo when doing Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels from Super Mario All-Stars. The music seemed sad, so unlike the Mario series. Probably fits since Mario got killed by a poison mushroom in the intro. That demo made me think I'd be dodging poison mushrooms through the entire game, or that even if I save the Princess I will still die from a poison mushroom at the end. I just never expect demos to show the player losing.
I dunno, I think dying is a neat way to wrap up a demo that can't show the entire level.  After all, Mario also died in the Super Mario Bros. 1 demo, except when the controls desynched and he just walked against a pipe at the end without ever getting hurt...

Fan Creations / Re: Post your YouTube info here!

Here's my account...  And here's my latest "Youtube Poop" I made based on a Mario cartoon that I submitted to some contest where I was supposed to advertise it a lot.  But I guess I didn't do a very good job.

Yes, the game will involve loads of nudging and butt-racing.  Not for the faint of heart.

Or is there?  Maybe we should stop liking EarthBound because popibros1 doesn't like it.  Makes sense to me.

Mario Chat / Re: WarioWare characters in Mario games?

I liked Wario Land 3 well enough, but it seemed like a game that should have come out before Wario Land 2.

Mario Chat / Re: BEST IN SERIES? Week 8: Yoshi's Role

And I see this is why Nintendo has started to go back and mine the Yoshi's Island concept some more with games like Yoshi's Touch And Go and Yoshi's Island DS.  GEE, WHAT A COINCIDENCE THAT MARIO, PRINCESS PEACH, DONKEY KONG, WARIO, AND BOWSER ARE ALL THE SAME AGE

So it's a bad bump. He should've waited to make his own thread.
Waited until when?  What's so bad about posting on the same topic as the topic?

Yeah... I always thought it was strange how you attack with your spikes in those games, but the bad guys have spikes that are stronger than yours, so you can't spike their spikes or you'll get spiked.

Sonic has always had six spikes on the back on his head like that.  It was the first two cartoon series that got it wrong by flattening them all into a single column.  I guess whoever came up with the character designs for the cartoons never played the bonus game in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Now I do think that his spikes have gotten very long and droopy in recent years.  I imagine it was part of the attempt to make Sonic look older by making him taller and leaner, but to me they look too limp to cut anything and so heavy that Sonic shouldn't be able to stand up anymore.

I guess some of Mario's grunts were a little deeper in Super Mario 64.  But to me, Luigi's voice isn't higher or lower than Mario's so much as it has a more "pinched" quality to it, like his throat's tensed up and his mouth is stretched thin and he tries not to flip into falsetto.

And I'm still waiting for them to fix the back of Sonic's head.
What's wrong with the back of Sonic's head?
