Anyway, now that people have dragged this up off the bottom of the lake again, (hmm, I just made up a new expression!) in regards to "the" Mario, it's as he says it in the game. That's all there is to it. You can't argue with the imperical data found in Mario's pronunciation of his own name.
Anata ni chigaini nekkyo naraba anata dekinai shochi suru. (Above phrase may have incorrect grammar.)
Anyway, sure, it doesn't really matter how people pronounce it... yeah, there are people named Mario who say it differently than Charles Martinet, and that's fine...
But what really gets me is why they call Mario Lemieux "Super Mario" when he pronounces it "Mare-ee-oh".
What it all comes down to: Obviously, people pronounce it differently, but still, if you mean Mr. Nintendo, it's Mah-ree-oh. End of story.
