Seeing that ad almost makes it embarrassing that I bought the game.

I hadn't seen it before I got like halfway into the game, but it's just almost embarrassing... like if your friends were to catch you camping outside Gamestop for Wii Fit Plus.
Formerly quite reasonable.

With any Nintendo game today, once I've gotten the bare minimum information to decide if I want it or not, the most I'll look at is the back of the box when I buy--not press releases, not TV ads, not the instruction booklet, not anything that'll superficially drag it down to the casual level.

Let's not derail the topic, please.

Oh, and about the commercial:
*gruff voice*: I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT IS BUT I'M EATIN' IT

Why do you hate Final Fantasy VII?

Not the game itself very much (well, THAT MUCH, it's still nowhere near one of my favorites, though I'll admit the soundtrack is very good) so much as the fan base.

My cousin made me play that game like two years ago after I was dissing it. The sensation was like watching Citizen Kane and finding out it's about a boy trying to convince his parents his dog can talk and then he talks and he's voiced by Kat Williams.

Like Paris Hilton, that game is apparently famous for being famous.

I've never played, actually. Just wondering why people hate it so much around here.

It's famous for setting the standard of how JRPGs would work in the 3D era. (the Super Mario 64 of JRPGs)

It's famous for being the precise moment when JRPGs hit the big leagues in American popularity. (the Guitar Hero of JRPGs)

Well, makes sense to me. Of course, the "big leagues in American popularity" thing seems like it would be somewhat irrelevant--would anyone who wasn't already a Final Fantasy fan really have bought it? Of course, I suppose people could get into the series with FFVII and then work their way backwards...

Not nearly as many people played RPGs prior to FFVII. My speculation is that it was the first game of its kind (or first "serious game") that nubile young gamers encountered when they got a PlayStation, and it being their first console they were like THIS GAME IS THE BEST EVER with really no precedent. It's not that it's not a good game, it's just that by today's standards for 3D it seems even more primitive than its polished 2D predecessors.
That was a joke.

Yes, yes, yes to the max. It had ultro-marketing to the extreme. We're talking trailers at the movie theater levels. The beautiful FMV really attracted all sorts of people, too. Everyone knew Final Fantasy VII. Everyone needed Final Fantasy VII.

Not owning a PlayStation, I sadly had to wait for the PC release.

Yeah, I suppose... I heard the ad had some major bullshot.

I don't hate Final Fantasy VII, but I hate the fact it's somewhat pricier than typical retro game prices.
