Mario Chat / Why Yoshi's Island DS makes no sense
« on: January 08, 2013, 10:33:27 PM »
From Supper Mario Broth, a blog run by a former editor of Waluigious:

Quote
Yoshi's Island had a basic story: The Stork is delivering Baby Mario and Baby Luigi to their parents, but gets intercepted by evil forces who hold him and Baby Luigi captive while Baby Mario lands safely on Yoshi's Island. With the Yoshis' help, Baby Mario needs to reunite with Baby Luigi and free the Stork so he can finish his job, all the while overcoming adversity by the bad guys looking for him, avoiding being captured himself. So far so good.

In the sequel on the Nintendo DS, however, the formula is shaken up... but doesn't make any sense as a result. Instead of the Stork getting captured, now it's just a bunch of babies being kidnapped. The Yoshis and the Stork need to team up with some of the babies that escaped and rescue the others. Sounds good, right? Let's examine the logic:

The Yoshis can move freely around the map on their own, when unencumbered by babies. At the end of each stage, another Yoshi is there to take over the carrying, and he got there without any issues all by himself. In Yoshi's Island, this isn't an issue since the mission is to get Baby Mario to the end, not the Yoshis. They just divide the work of carrying and protecting him.

In Yoshi's Island DS, however, the Stork can reach any place on the map as well. He's there immediately at every Stork Sign, and they're in every level. And he's carrying every baby but one. Now, do you see it? If the Yoshis can get everywhere without problems, and the babies can (using the stork), what's the point of the Yoshis carrying the babies? All they need to do is get to Bowser's Castle anyway - so why not just have the Yoshis waiting there and get the babies delivered to the final chamber?

If you have two parts that have no problem moving by themselves, why do you put them together to get somewhere even if that only means difficulties?

General Chat / Winter 2012 ADVANCED Poster Awards!
« on: January 01, 2013, 07:04:18 PM »
Time of that it's again year!

Rules:
  • No voting for yourself. Lots of voting for me.
  • There will be two rounds of voting, sort of a primary and general. The first one, starting now, will be in an approval format. The top vote-getters from this round will be voted on in the second and final round as necessary.
  • This means you may vote for as many people/things in each category as you like in this round. Voting for more will not diminish the weight of your vote, so go all out!
  • Abstaining is totes an option, too. Vote in as many or as few categories as you want (but more would be good).
  • Edit your post freely to change your votes until the voting round closes.
  • You may also send your ballot to me in a PM if you want it to be secret.
  • When voting for a post or topic, please include a link. You can link to an individual post by clicking on its .
  • Votes should be for stuff that happened in 2012, or on or after December 10th of 2011 (when the last awards started). There's some flexibility here -- for example, you can vote for a Best Newbie who registered in 2011, but didn't become active until 2012.
  • This round of voting will close at 12:01 AM EST, February 24th, 2013.

Categories are as follows:

Poster of the Year: (Insert something grandiose-sounding here.)
Post of the Year: (More unnecessary padding here.)
Topic of the Year: (Remember to replace these with actual descriptions before posting!)
Image of the Year: Original images are generally preferred, though this category can also apply to excellent contextual use of a pre-existing image.
Signature of the Year: Some previous sigs were recorded over here, for reference.
Song of the Year: Hey whoa what's this?! It's the Song of the Year category! Enough original music has come out of these forums that it's about time we recognized it. Remember, you can vote for as many as you want!
Deezer Award: It's the Deezer Award.

Funniest Poster: Who's the funniest posters?
Most Creative Poster: Who's the most creative posters?
Smartest Poster: Who's the smertest posters?
Most Amiable Poster: Who's the most amiable posters? (Hint: It's Markio.)

Best Newbie: Who was the most appetizing fresh meat?
Blast from the Past: Dang we had a lot of these this year.
Most Missed: Who needs to blast back here in 2013?
Most Improved: Who doesn't need to be blasted in the face as much as before?

Most Mario-Wise Poster: NEEEEEERDS!!
Meowiest Poster: I don't even know why this is still here.
Queen of Posters: I really shouldn't have used all my Queen puns last year.
King of Posters: Equal opportunity now! Also the Queen and King have to kiss.
WTD Award: bazpringles

Mario Chat / Download Paper Mario, get the Pie Factory
« on: October 01, 2012, 07:18:14 PM »
To promote the eShop, Nintendo of America is offering a free download of Donkey Kong: Original Edition to Club Nintendo members who download Paper Mario™: Sticker Star, Style Savvy™: Trendsetters, Crosswords Plus, Art Academy™: Lessons for Everyone!, or Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask™ before January 6th 2013. This special edition of Donkey Kong, which seems to be the same as the one that was preinstalled on special edition Mario 25th Anniversary Wiis in Europe in 2010, includes the "Pie Factory" level from the arcade version that was removed from the NES port due to space limitations, but does not include most of the other elements that were left out or modified in the NES port -- so if you're looking for an arcade-perfect port, Donkey Kong 64 is still the only one.

Paper Mario comes out 11/11. If you can't wait until then, Art Academy and Crosswords Plus are available right now in the eShop for $29.99 each. Professor Layton comes out 10/28, in case you were wondering.

Video Game Chat / I just had the best idea ever

LINKCEPTION

Materials you will need:
  • 1 big TV
  • 1 Wii or Gamecube
  • 4 more Gamecubes
  • 4 Game Boy Players
  • 4 medium TVs
  • 4 GBA-GCN Link Cables
  • 4 Gamecube controllers with everything except the analog stick removed
  • 4 Gamecube controllers with everything except the A button removed
  • 4 Gamecube controllers with everything except the B button removed
  • 4 Gamecube controllers with everything except the L and R buttons removed
  • 16 people
  • 1 copy of Four Swords Adventures

Each of the four Links is controlled by a Game Boy Advance, but in this case, each Game Boy Advance is a Game Boy Player on a Gamecube that is itself controlled simultaneously by four controllers. In each of the four four-player teams, one person controls that Link's movement, one controls the sword, one controls the item, and one controls picking things up. All sixteen of them must work together to save Zelda.

If you wanted to go even stupider, I think you could replace the sixteen Gamecube controllers with sixteen Game Boy Advances, requiring a total of twenty Link Cables.

I so want to do this now, even though I know I'd suck at it.

Not at the Dinner Table / Pat Robertson: Legalize it, mon.

Quote
“I really believe we should treat marijuana the way we treat beverage alcohol,” Mr. Robertson was quoted by the newspaper as saying. “If people can go into a liquor store and buy a bottle of alcohol and drink it at home legally, then why do we say that the use of this other substance is somehow criminal?”

Mr. Robertson said he “absolutely” supports ballot measures in Colorado and Washington state that would allow people older than 21 to possess a small amount of marijuana and allow for commercial pot sales. Both measures, if passed by voters, would place the states at odds with federal law, which bans marijuana use of all kinds.

Well now.

If you ever did anything wrong in the past, this local GOP, which apparently has higher standards than God, has no use for you. This is stupid and wrong on many levels.

The only reason to have a rule like this would be to appease social conservative evangelical Christians -- the ones who claim to follow a religion based entirely on forgiveness. Having moral standards for the present is one thing. Applying them to the past like this, with no hope of forgiveness, is the exact polar opposite of Christianity.

Let me say that again: You have gotten the entire point of Christianity 100% backwards, Laurens County GOP. Christianity is not meant to be even slightly about being a way better person morally than everyone else around you and rubbing it in their faces, and pushing away anyone imperfect. The entire point of Christianity is that we are all hopelessly imperfect, and God forgives all of us, so we should be loving and forgiving everyone else. Christianity is having your favorite pen stolen by that dickweed co-worker of yours and then stopping and saying to yourself "Hold on. The creator of the universe gave up his life to save that dickweed, and I can't give up a pen? Who the hell do I think I am?"

This kind of self-righteous attitude is at least 78% of what is wrong with modern American Christianity (and at least 59% of what is wrong with the modern Republican party).

Also, you gave your state's delegates to Newt Gingrich, you idiots.

General Chat / a scary story
« on: February 27, 2012, 12:40:55 PM »
i had a lot of dirty clothes this morning

i decided i would go do some laundry

the washing machine broke a few days ago

my dad fixed it

then my mom decided to bleach the whole thing
because it had been smelling kinda moldy for a while anyway

so then now it's today

i take my laundry basket to the washing machine

my colored clothes are on top, so i start loading them

then i open the detergent drawer

there is something in the fabric softener compartment

and i cannot tell
whether it is vinegar
or bleach

we have been using baking soda to wash and vinegar as softener for a while now

i sniff it
it doesn't smell like anything

i pull up the bottle of vinegar
and sniff it
it smells like vinegar

i pull up the bottle of bleach
and sniff it
it smells a little like bleach

i sniff the fabric softener compartment's liquid again
it smells like neither
but neither does it smell like water

i stick my finger in the liquid
i sniff my wet finger

i consider licking my finger

but i don't

i decide, to be safe, i will wash my whites first
but the floor is dirty
and there is no extra basket
or surface

so i pile my colored clothing on top of the washer
hoping none of them fall irretrievably behind
the washer
and then
i load in
the whites

i open up the detergent drawer again

i put bleach into the bleach compartment

i put the baking soda solution into the detergent compartment

and i decide i will fill up the softener compartment to the max fill line
with vinegar

but when i do

the fabric softener compartment

is now
