Video Game Chat / Re: Tournament/Competitive Play
« on: April 16, 2011, 10:44:47 AM »
I actually attended a MKW tournament a couple of months ago at my college, but it was the first time they'd ever done one, so they weren't able to find enough people that actually had everything unlocked to allow all courses to be played, thus eliminiating some of my stronger courses (notably Bowser Castle 3) as options.  Furthermore, they only let us use Wii Wheels, thereby softening the competition in general (if I had to guess, 90% of us normally used Gamecube controllers).  I did get to the final round, but I came in second every race (we raced four courses, four players at a time).  Just as well, as I think all they were giving away were T-shirts with the LAN party logo on them.

Before that though, I may have attempted to play Donkey Kong at the local bowling alley (not by myself of course. I was like, 5 and my parents bowled a lot back then).

Oh, I didn't even think of arcade games.  Pretty sure I was playing Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man (technically, their freeware/shareware PC counterparts Pac-PC and Ms. Pac-PC, but same difference) from about age 4.

Pretty neat that they do these deals, but I gotta wonder, why Domino's?

First one I remember playing was Duck Hunt (sadly, Mario didn't interest me at the time), when I was around 5.  I remember playing various Mario games with friends over the next few years, though, including SMB, SMAS, MK64, SMBDX, and the first Mario Party.

Except NSMB didn't have 3D in the majority of its levels.  I think the SMGs (particularly the first) are great games in their own regard, but I really hope this does end up more in the SM64 vibe.  And unfortunately, those four screenshots were just ambiguous enough to let it go either way.

Ahh, I remember seeing that happen with BP once; I didn't think of that.  Although, wouldn't it be 1004 (998+6)?  At any rate, that'd only increase the damage dealt by about 5 or 6 per fireball; a comparatively small amount, to say the least.  Still a ways short of 32,767, at any rate.  I oughta try out those other combinations some time...

Oh, and random fun fact I initially came here to post: "Supersonic" and "Percussion" are anagrams.  That's probably the longest pair of one-word anagrams I've seen in quite a while, if not ever.

Mario Chat / Re: Most Underrated Mario Game

Personally, I think that both SMB2s are a bit underrated.  I feel like the Japanese one is unknown to a good portion of the Mario fanbase, in spite of its recent ports and such; although it's not as original as SMB3 or SMW, it has unadulterated difficulty that at least rivals that of every Mario platformer since (save for the Perfect Run and such), and I love it for that.  On the flip side, the stateside SMB2 catches a lot of flak for being a rip-off and such, but then, you guys have pretty much said all that should be said in favor of it already, and I'm in full accord with it (Heck, I'd never even considered the fact that the POW Block was around before DDP).

And I have to agree with jmd as well; although I didn't particularly care for FLUDD's gimmicks and the controls and such, Sunshine did manage a seriously great sense of aesthetics, a fair amount of variety despite the constant overarching "tropical island theme", and above all, more exploration potential than either of the SMG games.

I don't believe it's possible to do better unless setting the A button to auto-fire was sub-optimal.  In any case, eighteen fireballs is definitely impossible in real-time; ten is about the most I've ever gotten.  An easier way to quintuple-digit damage (IIRC) is to use Spiny Badges AA, Great Force and Red Peppers, then use Splash or Swing Bros on a Sharpea or the like.  Then again, it might be even better to do do Splash Bros. Advance and use Mush Badges AA; not sure, though, as the Advanced version is only about 6/7 of the attack power of the non-Advanced one.

I cause over 19,000 damage in one hit in Superstar Saga.  Apparently, the max is 32,767, but I don't see any way to get better than this, even with TAS.  On a random note, the beginning of this video looks really sweet with that "1911" feature YouTube's got for April Fools'.

-Not Mario & Luigi. One of the greatest things about the series' charm is its superbly animated sprites. 2-D, one-frame-at-a-time, raw animation. I say M&L and Paper Mario should actually trade their seats on console/handheld this time and M&L4 needs to sport high-res, 100% 2-D graphics as a Wii (or whatever) game.

In full agreement with this statement.  Having a Paper Mario and a Mario & Luigi on the same system would seem to me a bit redundant anyhow.  Plus, at least judging from the ages-old alpha screenshots, it would appear that the battle system could easily end up being more similar to Mario & Luigi games' than the past Paper Marios'.

Drat, I forgot about that crazy trick that the fourth root of (22/2143) = 3.14159265, or pi to eight places.  Oh well, 2148.

Well, after seeing the launch title list, I feel much less obligated to get the 3DS as close to release as possible.  I'm still interested as to how that Paper Mario'll pan out, probably more so than I am about "Super Mario 3DS", but I guess I'll have to wait a while to find out anyway.

This looks pretty promising; plus, the logo has what is presumably a raccoon tail (which I noticed long before Iwata so blatantly pointed that out).
