Mario Chat / Is Super Mario RPG overrated?
« on: July 09, 2008, 04:56:59 PM »
For a while, I've honestly been wondering why Super Mario RPG has gotten so much praise. I know it has a special place in many people's hearts - especially because of the storyline and memorable characters- but I really don't see the reason for its immense popularity. I've played it - and it's really quite boring, IMO. Basically all you do is fight a ton of enemies that are all the same, and then fight a boss. Rinse, repeat - all the way to the end of the game (note - I haven't actually played the whole game - it got too boring too quickly).

So, I'm wondering if anyone else shares my opinion. Does anyone else out there think that SMRPG is not all its cracked up to be?

SMB3. Granted, I'm not very good at it at all, but I still love it.

And honestly, I've always thought that SMW (which seems to be cited by a lot of people as their favorite game) is a bit overrated. Now, I'm not saying that it's no good - it's awesome - but I don't like it nearly as much as SMB3. Mainly, it's because I personally think that the level design is a bit uninspired compared to SMB3, and because I don't like the level themes as much. I think I even read once that the creators felt that the design was a bit rushed compared to previous Mario sidescrollers. Dunno where though.

Easy - it will be like Super Mario Galaxy, only with even more crazy stuff and more references to old mario games. Yeah, real original, aren't I?

Okay... I thought this was pretty obvious? Although, Luigi himself wouldn't think that, most likely. :/

Oh great - another problem with the video formats. Darn it, why can't the whole world use the same format for video games? That would have gotten rid of all these hassles. :X

Happy 4th of July! Now, if only our congress would stop monkeying around and make me feel like this country deserves independence...

Note: The above was just a joke. Please don't  respond - I really don't want to have a political discussion right now. :P

I agree with Meowrik (!). Killing a cow is much "meaner" than killing a fetus. With that said, I don't care if someone kills a cow and I don't care if someone kills a fetus.

And why is that? Cows are not on the same level as people, and neither are sheep, pigs, or any other kind of animal. Yes, that includes even animals that we love like cats and dogs. HOWEVER, this does not mean that I support killing animals whenever people feel like it. No matter what the animal, killing it inhumanely or for no reason is wrong, end of story.

On the other hand, killing animals like cows for food is necessary, because most humans depend on meat to survive. It would be absolutely impossible to turn the world into a vegetarian planet, and it would have devastating effects on the third world countries. Does this mean that we can kill them however we want? No - once again, killing animals for meat is only appropriate if it is done mercifully. I myself am not happy with how cows are fed into slaughter engines like pieces of wood these days - there's got to be a better way than that. :X

The fact that you don't shoot solid projectiles isn't what makes it better than most first person shooters-- I think it's the portal system and GLaDOS that make it better than most first person shooters. Frankly, I like Half Life 2 and Half Life 2: Episode 2 more than Portal. Not Episode 1, though.

True, but the simple fact that they even made a first person game without focusing on killing guys by directly shooting them with weapons probably makes it a lot more interesting. I've really gotten tired of FPS shooters that all seem to be the same game made by different companies. Sure, there's some good ones out there (Bioshock and Half Life, for example), but a lot of them are very similar, and thus are also very repetitive :X

Dear Zarkan,

Portal has never cost $50. It has always cost $20. Do some research.

You misread me. I know that it cost twenty - I just saw it in my store a little while ago! What I was refering to was the possibility that they might mark it up for the Wii if they make it on there. Thank you. :)

Portal's not actually a shooter. You get shot at, but don't shoot

Yes, which is what makes it so much better than most first person games.

I've never played it, since I basically never play first person shooters, but I must admit that Portal is a lot better than the average shoot em up, mindless style of a lot of first person shooters these days. I'll have to try it eventually, and may even get it if I like it (I heard it's really funny too.).

I also think that Portal should be ported to Wii eventually. If they do that however, it MUST be a budget title. Paying 50 dollars for a game that aparrently is fairly short is a terrible value, IMO.

Another thing: I remember watching on NBC nightly news a story about an interagator that interviewed Saddam Hussein before his trial. Saddam actually revealed that he had faked possesion of WMD's to impress Islamic nations like Iran (I may be hazy on the details a bit, but I think that was the general gist).

Basically, this means that George Bush had a good reason to invade Iraq, and that it wasn't his fault that he found now WMDs.

No, but some people think it's a viable idea, and it makes me angry.

I agree with that. It's stupid to bomb anywhere with a weapon of that power unless it will have a major affect on the world and will bring peace. That is why - terrible as it was - bombing Japan in WWII was necessary, IMO.

I will never understand for the life of me why they refuse to put that guy in any games. Besides a questionable cameo in Link's Awakening, he never shows up. I forget... was he even a trophy in Melee? A trophy and/or sticker in Brawl? He's 100% owned by Nintendo, for goodness sake.

Well, I don't think Miyamoto likes him that much, so forget about him showing up in a major mario platformer. However, I don't see why Camelot  has looked over him - they've put all kinds of crazy characters in their games, so why not Wart?

Can you at least use the quote () button when quoting a post? Doing a quote by copying and pasting text into quote tags makes it harder to tell who said what.

Sorry about that - on other forums I'm used to using the quote tags, as they don't have a quote button. Thanks for pointing that out.

Forest Guy, while I don't necessarily agree with your opinion, I do consider that very logical. It is getting very tiring that the federal goverment now seems to have all the power in the United States - leaving the state goverments without any final say in any issue. Although, sometimes I also think that the Federal Goverment needs to take control of a situation - especially when battling it out in the states is too time consuming and wasteful.

"Accidental" really weakened my point there, but imagine what would occur if somebody struck somebody else, out of aggravated rage or self defense, in a manner that, accidentally, was more than crippling. Believing that every person who somehow takes the life on another deserves to lose their own life is simply misguided and prejudicial.

Well, then that wouldn't be intentional. I think what goodie is saying is that anyone who kills someone on purpose, intending to end their life, deserves to die. People who kill people out of self defense or agravation are usually not trying to kill the person, just to stop them from beating up on them. The two situations are different cases.

War is sometimes necessary, and is also a fact of life. It's not pretty, but sometimes it's the only way.

Quote
I don't think war is ever necessary. If two countries have a disagreement, they should just negotiate in a mature way.
I especially think the war in Iraq is really dumb. The US has no right to tell other countries what to do.

If we tried that on Hitler and the Japanese instead of fighting and defeating them, the world might be completely under a single dictatorial rule, and commanded by Germany, Italy and Japan. You can't negotiate with some people - because some people believe they are beyond normal rules and have the right to rule other other countries. Just look at people like Robert Mugabe, Hugo Chavez, and Kim Jong II. Do you honestly think that negotiation with these scum is going to stop them from killing their own people and destroying their countries for the pursuit of military strength and domination?

Quote
In fact, I think this whole "war on terror" is just an excuse to take away our rights (and to take the Arabs' oil). I believe that the government either planned or allowed the events of 9/11 to happen just so they'd have an excuse to start wars and do stupid stuff like the Patriot Act.

Oh no, don't get started on conspiracy theories. There is almost no evidence whatsoever that the US themselves did this, and many Muslim prisoners of war have already testified to planning these attacks for the purpose of Jihad. Personally, I think people usually believe this junk just because they want to blame everything on their leaders, as always. It's always the President's fault - the US has no enemies but the ones that are only trying to defend themselves from the insidious rule of Bush the Tyrant. I can't stand stuff like that.

Note: Please realize that the above is my opion as well, and I am not trying to insult anyone in this topic. Thank you.
