I recently got off my lazy butt and finally did the Portal/HL2 trick (wherein you can use the Portal gun in Half-Life 2 to sneak up on Combine and such), and it really got me thinking. How awesome would it be to have the ASHPD fully integrated into HL2:E3 - where ragdolls, bullets, grenades, enemies, everything can pass through? Hardly an original thought, but still. Then I really started thinking:

What if the Portal gun were integrated into other, completely different styles of play?

Think of stealth games, and body management. Instead of stuffing bodies into lockers, you could just place a portal above a dumpster fifty feet away, and another one below the body, and let gravity do the rest without the need to drag it everywhere. Then, maybe, transport the dumpster to an entirely different location. What about sneaking up on a guard in a highly guarded area, grabbing him, and then taking him to a deserted area in a completely different building to interrogate? The possibilities are endless.

Or maybe an open-world, GTA-style game? Imagine being chased by cops, and then driving your car through a portal and into the other side of the city? Bank-robbery, racing, and escort missions would become a breeze. Of course, seeing as how those are the three most common mission types in GTA, that's probably why this'd never happen.

I realize these aren't original ideas, and this is pretty old news (Portal came out in '07), and I'm sure far awesomer possibilities exists if you stretch your brain enough (what about having three portals, and the ability to fire portals through other portals?), but I felt the need to start a topic for this.

Good thinking.  Nintendo could even get in on the action and put portals in Mario games.  To avoid looking like they copied Portal they could make them all green Warp Pipes.  But seriously, what if you could aim your Portal gun with a Wiimote?

Portal is awesome in my opinion.  I haven't played HL2 yet, but I have Portal for PC and Orange Box for PS3.  My dad's a big fan of Quake and Tomb Raider so I may get Orange Box for him this Christmas.  I think he'll like it.

I've never played it, since I basically never play first person shooters, but I must admit that Portal is a lot better than the average shoot em up, mindless style of a lot of first person shooters these days. I'll have to try it eventually, and may even get it if I like it (I heard it's really funny too.).

I also think that Portal should be ported to Wii eventually. If they do that however, it MUST be a budget title. Paying 50 dollars for a game that aparrently is fairly short is a terrible value, IMO.
What is a mystery? Just go inside my head, and you'll find out.

Portal's not actually a shooter. You get shot at, but don't shoot.

Portal is basically a puzzle game with an FPS interface. Seling it on the Wii would be difficult due to how short it is, but porting the entire Orange Box would also be difficult due to the logistics of making Team Fortress 2 work on the Wii. (I'm not even going to go into whether the Wii would be able to run any of the games in The Orange Box at their current specifications.)
Remember that your first Goomba boldly you walk? When Mario touched that mushroom being brought up more largely remember that you are surprised? Miscalculate your jump that pit remember that it falls?

Dear Zarkan,

Portal has never cost $50. It has always cost $20. Do some research.
That was a joke.

Speaking of which, each Sam & Max episode is short, but each episode is $9, and you can get a whole "season" for $30. I've heard Sam & Max Season One is coming to Wii.

Seeing the Portal games in other HL2 games would be cool. But other games (aside from Narbacular Drop)? Nah, then you're just getting into copy-catting. For stealth games, I think it'd be more intensifying to actually sneak right past a guard, right under its nose, instead of using a portal and throwing a box through it so the box hits the guard on the head.
You didn't say wot wot.

I haven't seen a single person who doesn't like Portal. I must get my hands on a copy, it just looks like so much fun.

Also, can anyone else here imagine Smash Brothers with portals? Uppercut someone upwards, jump through a portal, re-emerge above them, and Meteor Smash to oblivion. Heck yes.
If my son could decimate Lego cities with his genitals, I'd be [darn] proud.

Heck no way, there's no way to use anywhere near the Portal mechanics in Smash Bros. It's too fast paced and 2D.
That was a joke.

You misread me. I know that it cost twenty - I just saw it in my store a little while ago! What I was refering to was the possibility that they might mark it up for the Wii if they make it on there. Thank you. :)

Yes, which is what makes it so much better than most first person games.

The fact that you don't shoot solid projectiles isn't what makes it better than most first person shooters-- I think it's the portal system and GLaDOS that make it better than most first person shooters. Frankly, I like Half Life 2 and Half Life 2: Episode 2 more than Portal. Not Episode 1, though.

True, but the simple fact that they even made a first person game without focusing on killing guys by directly shooting them with weapons probably makes it a lot more interesting. I've really gotten tired of FPS shooters that all seem to be the same game made by different companies. Sure, there's some good ones out there (Bioshock and Half Life, for example), but a lot of them are very similar, and thus are also very repetitive :X

Don't forget System Shock, Rainbow Six Vegas, and F.E.A.R.

EDIT: As for classifying Portal, why not just take the Metroid Prime route and call it a "first-person adventure game"? I'd say it's more deserving of that title than MP, actually.

You absolutely HAVE to throw the word "Action" in there some place.
