Mario Chat / Re: What sport should Mario try next?

Oh, I saw your initial post.  I just think it'd be a mistake to make a Mario sports game but not include core Mario characters.  If you're going to make a Mario wrestling game, it'd practically be criminal not to roll out (E-rated of course) WWE diva versions of Peach and Daisy (and Birdo... HA!).  Mario and the less brutish cast members deserve a shot at stardom in the ring, and their wrestling make-overs would be too fun to pass up.

I'm glad they gave this series a break.  Hopefully they come back to it fresh and fix the problems that got worse as the series got rushed out every year.  If I were Nintendo, I'd save this for WiiU, though.  That touch screen, and it's interactivity with remotes will make for some killer minigames.  Flicking the dice across the screen to roll would be super cool.

Mostly related:

Nintendo dropped a pretty big Kart info bomb on us today:

ALL-TERRAIN KARTS!

Looks like airborne karts sprout hang glider wings and sprout propellers to hit the waves.  Very fun.  Reminds me of Diddy Kong Racing, and that's a good thing.  Hopefully bikes are coming back too though.

Also just off the top of my head screenshots show Mario and Luigi, Bowser, Peach, DK and Yoshi.  No surprises there, but it's nice to get more of the cast confirmed.

Baby Dry Bones would like... an egg right?  A dead egg?  Ha, like a fried egg?  That might be kind of adorable.

Dodgeball seems like an obvious choice, but a big, ridiculous pro-wrestling game would be tons of fun.  I say there's plenty of room for Mario!  He can be the Rey Mysterio to Bowser's Andre the Giant or DK's Hulk Hogan!

Mario Chat / Re: New Mario Power-Ups
« on: June 06, 2011, 03:30:24 PM »
There've been lots of variations on flight, and different ways for Mario to fire off projectiles or become invulnerable.  I think new Mario power-ups should focus on new things for Mario to do.  Galaxy 2 was great for this with Cloud Mario (which has become one of my all-time favorites, right up there with Raccoon Mario), Drill Mario and Rock Mario, and even new power-ups for Yoshi too.

I'd like to see Sticky Mario.  Mario covers himself in goo and can stick to any surface.  Sort of like the Spider-Ball from the Metroid games.  Maybe he could throw globs of slime to attack... or shoot webbing and make the power-up Spider-Mario?  If you wanted to make it completely broken he could also lay down web-platforms like Squitter in DKC2-3 or like Cloud Mario's clouds.

Glad I'm not the only one that thinks the babies su-su-su-suuuuuuuuck.

I really like how the Mario Kartniverse has reached into the DKniverse for Diddy and Funky.  Funky adds a lot of personality to the roster.  I wouldn't mind seeing K. Rool or Dixie join in too.

In that same vein, I'd LOOOOOVE to see Wario Ware characters break in too.  I agree that Mona is probably the best choice if we can only pick one WW character, but that whole cast is ripe with fun weirdos.  If Mona makes the cut and bikes are coming back, her trademark scooter should definitely be available.

They're so obscure, but I do think it'd be super fun to see Wart or Tatanga join up too.  A big royal frog and a space invader would definitely add some flavor to the line-up.  Mouser is good choice too, for sure.

If we had to lose King Boo as a playable character in order to get the Boo item back, I'd be okay with that.  Especially since then King Boo could make a big splashy appearance in the Ghost House/Luigi's Mansion track.

I would be pretty happy to see Bowser Jr. go.  Other than the babies he's my least favorite Mario character.  I have a feeling we're stuck with him for a while though.

And even though Diddy Kong makes him redundant, I'd love to see DK Jr. come back.  He was there for the very first Mario Kart, but we haven't seen him since!  It was nice to see him again in Mario Tennis on the N64, but he's definitely another long shot (though probably more likely than Tatanga or Wart).

E. Gadd would make a lot of sense, but I feel like since he wasn't in Double Dash or MKDS, his chances of showing up now are pretty slim.  His window may have closed, sadly.  Unless he makes another appearance in a major Mario game...

Mario Chat / Mario Kart 3DS Casting Call!
« on: June 03, 2011, 02:24:45 PM »
So I've had Mario Kart on the brain for the last week or so.  Maybe it's because E3 is coming up, where we'll (hopefully) get some more info on MK3DS.  Maybe it's because I had a blast playing with MKWii with my bro-in-law over Memorial Day.  Whatever it is, I want to talk Mario Kart, so I've come back to a board I haven't touched in years.

In this thread, let's talk about which characters you'd like to see come back, which new characters you'd like to see behind the wheel, and which characters you want left in the dust.

I love how much the character roster has grown over the years.  I've been playing Mario Kart games since the first one came out waaaay back in 1992, and I've been in love since.  The first few games stuck with 8 characters, but that roster has blossomed a TON, and it's always exciting to see new faces and returning favorites.

Let's use MKWii's cast as a base.  From there I'd...

Subtract the babies.  All the babies  God I hate the babies.  Babies can't drive cars.  What are they doing here?  Did Mario and Luigi start families?  Did the babies time travel?  Who changes their [dukar]ty diapers?

Add Kamek Kamek rules, and came thiiiiis close to being in MK64.  It bummed me out when I heard about this, just because HOW many MK games have come and gone since 64, and he STILL hasn't been in one?  Come on Nintendo!

Maybe add Hammer Bro There's beta data in MKWii that suggests the Hammer Bro may have been considered as a playable character.  I say bring 'im on!  They are one of my favorite baddies, and I feel like they're getting kind of rare over the years.  Though with Koopa Troopa and Kamek already (hopefully) in the mix, he may be kind of redundant.  Koopa Troopa gets a free pass because he's a classic (and was MIA for SO long)

Add The Koopa Kids Love these little brats.  Maybe not all 7, but maybe four of them, to fill the void left by the stupid, stupid babies.  OR  maybe there can be two or three "clusters" of Koopa Kids... a bunch of the little monsters pile onto one kart, refusing to wear seatbelts or follow any kind of safety regulations, jeering at other karts as they pass.  Yeah, I like that.

I'll have more on this later, but what about you?  Who do YOU want?

Mario Chat / Happy Mario Day everyone!
« on: March 10, 2009, 10:10:28 PM »
I know it's a little late, but yesterday, March 10th, was Mario Day!  Why?  Because it's March 10th!  You know, Mar. 10th!  You know, Mar.10!  You know, Mar10!  You know, Mario!

Sorry, that's just the best way I know (through text) to explain where Mario Day comes from.  Did you do anything special to celebrate?

I re-discovered Mario Kart Wii, and the fact that I think it's my favorite entry in the series.  Later tonight, I'm going to spend some quality time with Mario Galaxy, though somewhat ironically, I'll be playing as Luigi... but hey, his last name is Mario!

This little shindig has certainly rekindled my love of the Mario universe, all the wacky characters and fun adventures I've grown up loving.  It just creates such a warm fuzzy feeling in my soul.  Sure, I might spend more of my gaming time on my 360 nowadays, but nothing can replace that Nintendo magic, of which Mario is the master wizard.

Mario Chat / Is R.O.B. officially part of the Mario gang?
« on: March 16, 2007, 12:05:32 AM »
So now that everyone's favorite Robotic Operating Buddy is a driver in Mario Kart DS, does anyone think we'll see him in future Mario titles?  Do you want him in future Mario titles?

I hope so... I love R.O.B. and I'd love to see him stick his adorable robotic head into the next Mario Party or Kart or Sports.  He's a helluva lot cooler than Daisy, Waluigi or Bowser Jr., that's for sure, and since I doubt Nintendo will make R.O.B. 2.0 for the Wii, I want him to live on in gaming somehow.  I'm very curious as to what kind of roles the little robot will have in the future (in Mario and non-Mario games).

On the flip side though, I can see how some would see him as not "really" a Mario character.  He started as a peripheral for the NES, he's made cameos in F-Zero GX and the box art of Viewtiful Joe.  Anybody not want to see him in more Mario games?

Mario Chat / Re: Favorite Mario Pictures
« on: March 15, 2007, 11:55:09 PM »
I've been around, I just take long breaks from this board because it's a little slower than I'd like, especially when new Mario news is sparse (which it generally is, sadly).  I have a lot of love for that "abstract" Mario tribute too... I really love how creative some of our fellow Mario fans can be.

One of my favorite images ever... I love the chaos, even if Bowser looks completely wrong.  Like the official art I posted last time, it perfectly captures the mood of the game, and just bursts with fun.

A weird angle for one of Mario's weirdest experiences.  Tweeters still kind of creep me out.

One of my favorite game series meets one of my favorite movie series!  I'm surprised there hasn't been a double-jawed piranha plant in one of the games yet...

This might be my favorite piece of fan-art.  Piranha plants are some of my favorite baddies, and I especially like fan-art that depict the Mario Bros. as regular guys.

There's some really great stuff on Deviantart... I'd post "Super Bang Bros." but I might get banned... there's no nudity, just some raunchy humor.

Anyhow, I want to start with some of my favorite official art:

I love the setting, music and look of Mario Galaxy.  I haven't been this pumped for a Mario game in a looong time.

I prefer the version on the cover for the Super Nintendo version, but this will do.  The art style for Yoshi's Island is positively gorgeous, but I think this is my favorite piece.

Just like the Mario Galaxy and Yoshi's Island pics I posted, the official art for Mario 3 really does an awesome job of capturing the mood and spirit of the game it represents.

Mario, having such a huge fan base, has gotten some very interesting, strange and hilarious fan art.  Here are a few of my favorites:

Get it, PAPER Mario!

I like how this picture sums up Mario's determined personality.

Ridiculously adorable.  I love the Bros. together.

Mario and Luigi, Ren and Stimpified.  The look on Luigi's face is amazing.

I might post more later... there's a lot of Mario art out there to love. :)

If Viewtiful Joe is in the game, he needs to just stay Viewtiful, with regular Joe as maybe an alternate costume or something.  I'd love to see VJ, but I don't know HOW Slow, Mach and Zoom could be used without screwing everybody else up...

Unless maybe slow is a charge-up punch, like the Falcon Punch, Mach could be a rapid-fire barrage of attacks, and Zoom could just make Joe huge... Hmmm thoughts?

But yeah, Sakurai said to expect 2-3 more third party characters at the absolute most.  If we got Sonic and Mega Man, that's all I'd need.

It's not really fair to compare these two, I think.  They're wildly different types of sidescrollers.

But, if I have to choose it'd be Yoshi's Island.  So beautiful.  It's one of those games I have a really deep emotional connection too.  I have it with SMW, of course, jut not nearly as much.

I liked how they stuck with the tropical theme throughout.  It really gave the game a fresh, new flavor, and we got some really cool, original levels out of it, too.

Of course, sticking to the theme limited the level selection too, so it's kind of a mixed blessing.  Still, I had a blast on Isle Delfino with FLUDD.
