Ever wonder what would happen if Mario got a Portal gun?  Wonder no more! http://shigeruslist.com/2012/03/08/now-marios-thinking-with-portals/

Looks pretty cool...

...But I can't help but wish they'd picked a different game. This and that crossover one, they're really cool! But SMB1 is so tired... Why not make Portal SMW or Portal SMB3? Too much work?

I think there are a lot of different factors that lead these indie developers to zero in on SMB1 instead of a different Mario title.  One of them funnily enough, I think is how familiar the game is.  Everybody knows SMB1, its tricks and how it works.  That way, when the game is tweaked, the differences are all the more dramatic.  I'm betting simplicity is a big factor too.

Perhaps it's because this was their first go around and SMB was just easier to test out Portal mechanics?

I still enjoyed it. My brother and I got into it and the level editor is pretty cool.

The thing about having more than one person playing is that you tend to throw portals everywhere and it gets extremely frustrating until you work out some kind of game-plan.
I'm a horrible person.

Hopefully anyone at Nintendo that ever watches that will have it muted.
