Like, they were developing a 2.5D Mario RPG when someone mentioned it looked like paper.

That seems pretty likely. It looks like they were dropping sprites into 3D environments because they already had sprites and they were on a 3D console now, and that's how it turned out.

So yeah, I am still kinda concerned about how this seems to indicate that Nintendo still thinks all the Paper Mario series has to offer anymore is "Mario, except there's visual gags about how he's made out of paper." Paper Bowser apparently having dialogue is a good sign, though.

So Next Level was going to make a volleyball game that was as gritty and violent as Strikers, but Nintendo didn't like it. Supposedly it was because Waluigi kicking Mario in the stomach while he was on the ground was too dishonorable, but I think we all know the real reason was the Mario sideboob.

If Little Mac is in play, Doc would stand close to the ring, eating obscene amounts of chocolate, and Mac could do a Smash Taunt like Snake can in Shadow Moses Island and the Star Fox characters can in their stages. When he does, Doc would quip about one of Mac's opponents, like

On Mario: Hey Mac... bet you never thought you'd see Mario in the ring with you... again! Hahahaha!
On Bowser: Listen here Mac Baby, if Bowser kidnaps my chocolate bars, I'm countin' on you to get 'em back for me, okay?
On Wario: Hoo-wee, Mac! That's one nice bike! Think that when Wario ain't lookin', you can grab it for me?
On Zelda: It ain't nice to hit a girl, son. But maybe Princess Zelda will do somethin' about that for ya, ahahahaha!
On Pikachu: Hey Mac Baby, why you punchin' Pikachu? You don't know what it's like bein' picked on by somebody twice yo' size! Oh wait a second, maybe ya do! Hahahahahaha!

I'm still upset that this didn't happen.

Look, we know that the fans want a straight Samus Aran game. We also know that the best way to launch a game like that is to surprise and delight them, to give them a launch date, in an environment like this let them play it vs. what other companies do which is to announce a project that you may not see for five, six years. It’s just not the way we do things. We know the community wants to see a straight-up Metroid game. We know it.

I mean, at least Reggie didn't murder a Metroid fan with his laser eyes, so there's that.

Also, "we don't want to announce games until we know they're going to release within a year" he says as Nintendo announces the Zelda game for every console years in advance and then delays it.
