I've always been under the impression that Boom-Booms were more of a species than a single character. Otherwise, he must be one resilient bugger to withstand exploding into a question-marked orb umpteen times.

Would "Mace Penguins" be their Japanese translation? In that case, one would assume that Spikes would bear a closer resemblance to  those despicably adorable flightless fowl found on Yoshi's Island... but, of course, anything goes with Mario. Well, Nintendo is a corporation, and just like any other corporation, it has to shoot for the highest possible profit margins in order to keep its head honchos with their multi-million dollar paychecks. A bit harsh, but it be the truth. They'd still undoubtedly be making Yen out the wazoo in Japan by selling new Mario titles for ten dollars apiece. Similarly, Nintendo would consider releasing Super Mario All-Stars on Virtual Console to be financial crazy-talk -- why give the buyer five games for eight bucks when we can milk 'em for nearly thirty dollars through individual sales?

Given the vast disparity in appearance amongst Bowser's children, Boom-Boom could easily be a fellow member of Bowser's particularly bristly denomination of bipedal turtle-beasts, right? The entire Koopa Troop is seemingly composed of turtles morphed to various degrees, even up to the point of those poor, disfigured Spikes...

Quick question which ties into Toad's initial post -- What would happen if you were to import a character wearing items no longer existant in AC:CF? The only discontinued commodity that comes to mind is the Mini Moustache (AKA the WWII 'stache), but there may be a few others.

...Not that I was planning on creating any individuals with said facial hair, of course...

But yeah.
