I'm a little confused about what the Japanese version of SMB2 was.  I've heard of Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic, and I've heard of Super Mario Bros: Lost Levels.  Both games were only released in Japan (although DDP was going to be released to the US but the NOA rejected it) but I can't figure out which one is the Japanese version of SMB2.  DDP seemed to be the Japanese version of the game but all the characters  were different and they had an arabian theme to them (wasn't mario and luigi or any of the characters from their games).  Where as SMB:LL is considered just a hack of the original "American" version to make it harder for the Japanese public!  So Confusing!!  I really need to know what the official Japanese version of SMB2 because it's really nagging me!

Doki Doki Panic: Wasn't really Mario-related at first.
Japan's SMB2: A really hard game that resembles the original.
The rest of the world's SMB2: Doki Doki Panic, Marioed up.
Our SMB2 in Japan: Called Super Mario U.S.A.
Their SMB2 elsewhere: The Lost Levels, For Super Players, SMB2J on Virtual Console. Still really hard.
All your dreeeeeeams begiiin to shatterrrrrr~
It's YOUR problem!

Bird Person's explanation is quite satisfactory.  I'm just wondering where you got this idea from.

I got it from gamespot.com from their review for the game on the VC.

I see now.  I guess saying "basically just a level hack" is just a bit of an oversimplification.  While it's definitely built on the SMB engine, and a lot of things look the same, there's still the new graphics, the new objects (poison mushroom, wind), the original World 9, and a new ending theme.  It's very similar, yes, but at the time you wouldn't have really expected too much more from a sequel.

So basically Bird Person is saying that SMB2 for Japan came out in 1986 and before Doki Doki Panic which came out in 1987 (which would make DDP NOT the JP verison of SMB2) and then the american verison came out in 1988 of the original SMB2 in JP from 1986.  And then SMB22:LL is just SMB2 Japanese version put on the Virtual console.  Very confusing but I think I got it.

No, you don't.

SMB2 (Japan) 1986 -> SMBLL (US) 1993
Doki Doki Panic (Japan) 1987 -> SMB2 (US) 1988 -> SMUSA (Japan) 1992

You don't got it.  Or maybe you made an error when you typed.  To reiterate...blah, let me color code it.  Red is SMB2J based, purply blue is YK:DDP based.  Flags are also provided to show what was released where (Japan and US only).

1987 — Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic
1988 — Super Mario Bros. 2
1992 — Super Mario USA
1993 — Super Mario Collection (contains Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario USA)
1993 — Super Mario All-Stars (contains Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels and Super Mario Bros. 2)
1997 — BS Super Mario USA
1999 — Super Mario Bros. Deluxe (contains Super Mario Bros. for Super Players)
2001 — Super Mario Advance
2004 — Famicom Mini: Super Mario Bros. 2
2007 — Super Mario Bros. 2 (Virtual Console)
2007 — Super Mario Bros. 2 (Virtual Console)

2007 — Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (Virtual Console)

EDIT: Added GBA titles as reminded by Mß; added BS Super Mario USA just 'cause.

Okay I see so SMB2 for america is just a marioed version of YK:DDP.  And SMB2:LL is just the Japanese version of SMB2.  Thanks very much EM that chart was very helpful.
