Mario Chat / Re: Where is Mario really from?
« on: August 22, 2005, 11:14:25 AM »
However, if you take the Nintendo Power comics  into account, Mario and Luigi lived in the Mushroom Kingdom well into their childhood; long enough for Mario to meet Wario.  It's understandable how some people might argue against that being canon, but seeing as how the TV show was made by DiC (correct me if I'm wrong on that) and the movie was made by Lightmotive and Allied Filmmakers, which are both third party companies, the comic seems to be the only Extended Universe thing that you CAN consider canon, since it was the only one actually made by Nintendo and was shown in Nintendo Power itself.

Anyway, to get back on topic: Mario and Luigi seem to have been born in the Mushroom Kingdom; that's a given.  However, since Bowser, and what seems to be the beginnings of the Koopa Klan, were already aware of the brothers existence in SMW2, then it seems only logical that their family, and possibly the Mushroom Kingdom itself, would have feared for their safety.  Thus, they might have transported them to Earth in an attempt to keep them safe until they reached maturity and could return home.  Since Mario and Luigi are also always refered to as Italian and not American, it seems only logical that Mario and Luigi would hail from Italy itself.  PLUS!  If you take into account the fact that Donkey Kong '94 and Donkey Kong Land state that the original DK game took place not in Brooklyn, but in Big Ape City on DK Island, it's possible that Mario and Luigi have never been to America at all.  Unless the other games like Wrecking Crew and such also state that they took place in Brooklyn, which I'm not aware of.

Mario Chat / Re: Where did Bowser get his Kids?
« on: August 22, 2005, 10:58:18 AM »
My theory is that since the Koopa Klan is profficient with the dark arts, Bowser used magic to clone himself in order to create a rightful heir and got the seven Koopa Kids; each one of which representing a different part of his own personality.  However, since none of them were complete, he made an eighth clone that embodied all of these traits, which ended up being Bowser Jr.

Video Game Chat / Re: There should be a crossover

If anything, I think either Link or Kirby would be the most probable characters to make appearances in the Mushroom Kingdom.

They already kind of have links to one another.  (no pun intended)

I actually had the exact same ideaa long time ago.  It would be awesome to command a battalion of toads up against an army of koopas, having them march in formation and everything ^_^.

Thanks, guys ^_^.  I was hoping that I wasn't going over the top or anything.

And I know a back isn't a private part, but just the implication that the person is nude is enough to up the rating.  It seems silly, I know, but it's true.  I've seen a bunch of shows and movies that have those little warning labels before they start, like "adult situations" or "mild language", and they'll show a warning for nudity but all you ever see is the persons back when they're in the shower.

Oh, well in that case a MMOG might actually be a good idea.  Being able to form a traveling party consisting of various races from the Mariovese would be pretty fun ^_^.  I had intended to make a Super Mario D&D conversion a while ago, but I never got around to it.

As much as I'm enjoying this conversation (little bit of sarcasm there), I can't help but notice that we seem to have strayed away from the thread's original purpose.  The purpose was to describe certain characteristics that you would prefer to see in an M-Rated Super Mario game.  Now, since I've participated in pulling this thread off topic, I feel the responsibility to make an on-topic post as well (it's just a matter of principle).  So here goes:

If an M-Rated Mario game were to be created, I prefer that the mature content be in good taste.  Now, when I say mature content I don't just mean mature as is gore, cursing, and sexual references (even though I don't see the necessity for any of them); I also mean mature as in complex.  For the storyline, I would probably want something along the lines of the Koopa Klan actually delcaring war on the Mushroom Kingdom.  The M-Rating would probably stem from cutscenes that show the actual fighting on the battle-grounds (toads and koopas clashing with one another, Gladiator-style).

Maybe (and I do mean MAYBE) the H-word and the D-word could be used, as they aren't as offensive as other profanities, but that would be it.  They should also only be used sparingly, maybe once or twice through out the game each.

In regards to gore, I don't think it's really necessary to put detail into the actual internal organs being spilled.  The style of art used in the Mario games is like a cartoon, and thus usually not detailed enough to show such things.  What I would approve of, however, would be some blood here and there.  I don't mean copious amounts, but perhaps Mario gets a cut on his eyebrow and has a small streak of it running down his cheek; I think that would be ok.  Or even if a character were fighting in battle and happened to get slashed across the arm, a small expulsion of blood would be appropriate.  The blood should also not be too dark; once again, in keeping with the tradition of Super Mario's artistic style, the blood should be rather bright red, giving it a cartoonish feel, as opposed to the dark crimson that it would be in reality (if you've ever watched an anime where somebody gets sliced on the arm or something, then you know what I mean).  I mean, you find that kind of stuff in the Pokemon TV show (not that I'm comparing Mario to it), so I think it would be appropriate for a Mario game.

Now nudity is a tough call to make.  If there had to be a nudity, I would prefer it to be partial and not full frontal.  The character should be viewed from the back and from the waist up, no genitals or buttocks exposed.

And of course, I would like the storyline to embody a sophistication that might label the game as "mature".

In short, my list of things that would make the game M-Rated are:

- Realistic battle scenes between the two warring nations/realistic fight scenes between individual characters.

- Some use of blood, where appropriate, but no full on gore.

- The occasional use of the H or D words (only when the characters are in stressful situations, not in casual conversation)

- A meaningful storyline that crosses the boundry from "kid's game" to "mature game" (by this I mean the kind of storyline that might be found in a Final Fantasy game)

-Partial nudity; the person's back should be the only thing seen.

Ok, so I guess that about sums it up.  Feel free to flame me, but I just felt like I should respect the poster's original intent for the thread since I've already spoken against it.

You have very interesting interperetations of the Marioverse, Tingrio.  Did you find some of this information or is most of it simply personal speculation?  In either case, I'd like to hear more, even if I don't agree with certain parts.

Oh, and where does everybody get the name Plit from?  I keep seeing it everywhere, but as far as I know it's never been mentioned in any of the games or comics or anything.

Peach does have quite a few questions attached to her past.  I can only assume that Peach wasn't born into the Royal, at least not genetically (she may have been adopted as an infant).  One thing I want to mention is that in England, you can't become king or queen if you married into the family; you're stuck as a prince or a princess.  This might explain why Peach is human yet the rest of the family are toads, as well as why she remains a princess despite the apparent absence of any other authoritative figure.  The only question there is, who did she marry?  Did she marry the king of the Mushroom Kingdom back when he was only a prince?  Or did there used to be a Prince Toadstool who isn't there anymore?

I have a theory that the Koopa Kids were created through black magic using Bowser's own essence and that each kid represents a different part of his personality.  My interperetation of it goes as follows:

Ludwig von Koopa- Creativity

Lemmy Koopa- Humour

Roy Koopa- Strength

Iggy Koopa- Insanity

Wendy O. Koopa- Greed

Morton Koopa Jr.- Hunger

Larry Koopa- Confusion

After these "failed attempts" at creating a suitable heir, Bowser then created another clone that combined all these traits into a single being: Bowser Jr.  Or at least, that's how my theory goes ;).

As for Bowser's appearance, that's a toughy.  I've heard a number of theories on the matter, including the possibility that Bowser is a different race entirely and has nothing to do with Koopas on anything other than a social level, the possibility that he was once a normal Koopa who was altered through magic, or even, as you said, the possibility that he's a half-breed of a koopa and something else.

Do you mean in terms of different formats, like RPGs and the like?  In that case, I'd honestly really like to see a Super Mario fighter.  Now, I know alot of people would say that Smash Bros was a Mario fighter, but I mean a game uses strictly Nintendo characters and has the full range of movement around the arena like Tekken and so forth.  Can you imagine how awesome that would be?  I also want to note that the term fighter doesn't automatically mean "Mortal Kombat" and twenty gallons of blood spewing all over the arena in spontaneous intervals.  I was thinking more along the lines of something like Soul Calibur.  If you've ever played Soul Calibur II for Gamecube and used Link then you've got to know where I'm coming from ^_^.  Just imagine it, having Mario go up against Prince Peasley or something.  Mario armed with his hammer, Peasley with his sword, and the crashes and clangs as their weapons clash and perry one another.  Oh, and they should also only make it if they have a good storyline involved.  If it's just a fighter for the sake of having the characters beat the snot out of one another, then forget it.

I saw someone mention the Newgrounds Mario stuff back on page one, and I have to say, that's one of the reasons I wouldn't like to see an M-Rated Mario game.  Pretty much all of those things are made in very poor taste (fart jokes, Matrix-like fight scenes, ect) and if a Mario game were to turn out that stupid, I don't know what I'd do.  Now don't get me wrong, I'm all for M-Rated games as long as they're M-Rated for a reason that's necessary for the storyline and if it's done professionally.  For example, if the game consisted of the Mushroom Kingdom going to war and Nintendo wanted to make realistic battle scenes that contained the violence and material that you would actually find in that situation, that's great.  But if it's just random fart jokes and blood and guts for the sake of blood and guts, then count me out.

I'd definately go with the Wi-Fi adapter.  The best thing about handhelds is that you can just whip 'em out and play.  Having to find and go to a hotspot kind of negates that.

M-Rated?  No, I don't think so.  I just don't think it would really fit.  Just thinking of Super Mario going the way of Conker's Bad Fur Day just seems like it would ruin the universe.  T-Rated on the other hand, I'd actually want to see.  With that rating they'd be able to keep the light-hearted kind of environment that the Mario series has made for itself, yet still be able to factor in dramatic scenarios and violent scenes.
