Author Topic: Dead Game  (Read 10483 times)

« on: January 07, 2004, 02:30:32 AM »
So I've been wanting to replay Super Mario 64 lately, but it's dead.  Completely.  When I put the cartridge in and turn the system on, the screen doesn't do anything--doesn't come up plain black, or snow, or scrambled.  It just keeps showing the "video" prompt.  I thought something was wrong with the system at first but all my other games work just fine.  I've been keeping them clean and cool and dry and above all all in the same place, but only this one game is acting up.

Then I noticed something else:  the cartridge is a lot lighter than my other N64 games are.  Has something happened to it inside, or fallen out, and I didn't notice?  Just looking inside it looks the same, but I can't see in very far.  Or are all SM64 cartridges significantly lighter than the other N64 games I happen to own, like Starfox?

Hmm... my Super Mario 64 cartidge appears to be a bit lighter than other cartridges too. Strange, I can't think of any reasons why your game might be like that. However, some N64 games just tend to corrupt themselves after a certain amount of time. If you wanna check inside, you'll have to find a special socket to unscrew those bolts on the back.

The lightness is natural. You want to see a dense game? Try hefting Paper Mario!

Super Mario 64 = 64 Megabits
Paper Mario = 320 Megabits

(SM64 is in the smallest bitsize class of N64 carts.)

They wouldn’t pretty so bad, ain’t they?
That was a joke.

Thanks everyone!

I figured the lightness was natural, but it was also the only game not working, so I wanted to make sure.  I suppose the game's just reached the end of its lifespan.  *sniffle*

Don't get rid of it! Save it... think of all the good times you had with that specific SM64.

And kinda stupid. I wouldn't want someone holding a grudge on me... XP And I think the SSB cartridge is slightly heavier than Paper Mario's. Big frecking game, good times...

... I forgot what I was gonna' say...

Oh yeah. I once got a copy of SM64 (I've had like, 5 different copies) for $13, with a perfect cartridge, hardly used, the only thing was a fruit punch stain on the back of the instruction booklet. And that was just $13. How much would you get on eBay for it?

Yeah... makes me remember back when my N64 Mario Tennis became corrupted... I had done so well.

After beating the star cup with every character, I was at the top of the world...
But then I found out there were more cups! I immediately began on the new ones and after completing all those with every character, I had a grand old time. One day, I go to play it with my nephew... "Due to damage or corruption, all saved data has been lost."  Sad, I was. So, I figure, "Let's just start all over." I play it for about and hour and beat Star Cup with a bunch of people, go take a break, and come back. Turn the system on, same message. Tried it one more time... Same thing. A sad end, for such a miraculous game. Now I cannot wait for Mario Tennis GCN.

Heh, you probably didn't notice that a few rats that were extremly tiny went in, ate the stuff inside, and ran away...

Or maybe it just got dusty...?

If you reading this, it means you suck.

Tetris Attack may be the lightest game I've ever played, don't know why though... And I remember when I spilled Mountain Dew on my Tetris Attack cartridge, put it in, and got this message about how copying video games is illegal. And I reset it and it worked fine. Odd...

What that had to do with the original topic, I don't know.

I was playing my Super Mario 64 today. I went to the room with the entrance to Hazy Maze Cave. I talked to the Toad and then I ran around the metal pool. All of a sudden, the music got really loud and glitchy and Mario bent backwards and sunk halfway into the floor. I could still move around, but when I tried to leave, I got stuck in the door and had to shut the game off. Has this or anything similar ever happened to anyone?

Nope. I have an interesting glitch form back in the cartridge days...

I believe I wa splaying SMB on my original NES, and it froze on me. I started tapping it, well not tapping but not hitting hard, on it, and eventually the music starte d playing fast as if I were under 100 seconds and then the graphics garbled up, I tried jumping and Mario flew  off the screen in a sorta choppy skip, and I never saw him again... Well, not until I took the game out, cleaned the dust out and put it back in and it was fine.

The thing was, I hadn't played the game for at leats a year because this was way back when I first got SMAS, and had little reason to play my NES.

You should sell SMAS because it is an insult to the originals. By the way, do all SMB3 NES carts work horribly? My SMB3 cart would never work so I bought a new one, yet the new one worked the exact same, it didn't work (at least not good). Do you think that there is a chance that my DK3 NES cart that has been buried for a year will work?

SELL SMAS? What kind of things are corrupting YOU? That's a great game! I mean, they did change the old graphics and take away the minus world, but a lot of old NES games are hard to get working. Sorry about that, it's just that SMAS is the very first video game I ever owned and I've had it for about 7 years. I love my SNES like a brother. And I'm never getting rid of it.

SMAS only offended me with its new GFX. Nothing beats the original!!! I would rather import a FDS & SMB2j than play SMAS.

A lot of old NES games is what people don't understand how to use, more like. Clean your contacts regularly and all will be well.

Wait! I learned that you can clean cartridges with a Q-tip dunked in rubbing alcohol. Just call a video game store and they might tell you the same thing. Try it before you junk it!

Don't you worry, it's only a 2-day difference as opposed to a 1-year and 9-month difference.
I'm sorry about your SNES. I have 2 sugestions: make a list of the games you loved most and download them if you get a REV, and don't stop trying to fix it. I'm serious, If my SNES died I'd be doing everything in my power to fix it.

Wow, none of my games, NES, SNES, N64, NGC, GB, GBC, or GBA ever got corrupted and stopped working.  A few of the NES ones don't work as well as I'd prefer, but none of my games have ever stopped working altogether, and some of them are older than me!

My SM64 got all screwy lately. Mario began to do backstrokes on the ground!! Not only that, he looked like he was rolling around like a skateboard, and when he jumps, he does an ollie!! Fortunatly, it isn't doing it anymore.

This reminds me of two things: a close call and a great loss.
First, I wanted to play Mario Tennis on my N64, but it said that due corrpution, yada, yada, yada. I was so far in it, too. I left it alone for a week after trying it out a few times. Since then, my brothers has played a couple times and it was fine. I envy him, but I have not tried it since then. Too busy on Paper Mario, Sonic Heroes, and Dance Dance Revolution Extreme 2.
Second. I had to say good-bye to my SNES about 6-7 years ago. My brothers were fighting each other to see who would play next. My father got angry and took the SNES and trashed it against the floor. I never saw it again. However, last August, my mother forced me to give up Nintendo DS (I bought my own since then, first console I both with my own money) for someone's SNES. I'm happy that I got it, but I'm disappointed that he couldn't find his library of 23 games to add with the console.

My heart goes out to all games and systems that have met such a terrible fate.

Both of my SMB3 NES carts don't work. If I do get them to work, they glitch-up before I even get to world 1-fortress. I even cleaned both the console (which was made in 1987) and the carts. Strangely, my SMB2 and Zelda 2 carts work without the frustration and glitches.
