General Chat / Open voice acting casting call for a game jam game
« on: July 26, 2015, 07:35:31 AM »
Alright, so I'm trying to make a game for a game jam, and I've hit the point where I need a bunch of voice acting for it to work well.  It's sort of a "the more the merrier" deal, where any contribution can only help the game.

The concept of the game is that you're showing off this new game at a video game expo, except that you haven't actually got a real game to show off.  So you're faking it by moving the character around with the mouse and pretending to jump around and such.  And various on-lookers come by and tell you if the game looks fake.

And so I need voice clips for those various on-lookers.

It will require recording a number of voice clips for each unique "critic".  The details are all here:

If you want to give it a shot, just record and save the files according to the guidelines, and email it to me in a zip file, along with how you'd like to be credited in the game.

And here's what the game looks like right now:

I haven't got a proper playable build together yet, but I'm hoping to do so soon.

We were doing portraits in watercolor class, and so I wanted to pick someone with a distinct face.

When I was working on the sketch for this, it kept seeming like I was drawing the Happy Mask Salesman.  There's more than a passing resemblance...

Game Help / Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2: SOS!
« on: May 08, 2011, 02:12:28 PM »
Does anybody out there play/have a working file in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2 (Time/Darkness)?  I kinda need a rescue here, and it's hard to find somebody who's able to help.

I think I'm on floor 5 of the ice crevice cavern, whatever it's called.

Here's my SOS mail:

Fan Creations / Waluigi's Island
« on: July 25, 2010, 02:42:36 AM »
Some time ago, I decided that the song from the Waluigi's Island map in Mario Party 3 needed lyrics.  And so I wrote lyrics to it.
I also decided that it needed to be sung in Waluigi's voice, but I didn't do that until just today.

Listen if you dare...

The lyrics are:

I can hear the calling in the air
For mischief
A-la Waluigi
Just the thought of trouble draws me near
To bring forth my wicked plans

And everyone can see I built my kingdom on Waluigi's Island
Pretty soon you fools will all see ex-ac-t-ly who I am
I shall be your Ruler (The Lord of tricks and traps: King Walui---gi...)

All the world's villains look to me
For mischief
A-la Waluigi
I'm to them an honor just to see
Because of my wicked plans

And everybody knows my word is law here on Waluigi's Island
Now you're gonna have no choice but to recognize who I am
I shall be your God now (...)

Except without the parts in the parentheses, 'cause I couldn't figure out how to do 'em right.

Fan Creations / 3D Yoshi model (in progress)
« on: July 15, 2008, 12:54:42 AM »
I've been tryin' to make a 3D Yoshi model of late...  I don't have a lot of experience in this kinda stuff, but it's not too bad so far... just very low-poly.

Now it just needs a skeleton and I'll be able to move it...

Fan Creations / Secret Santa (for Anjil Yoshi)
« on: January 20, 2008, 02:23:13 PM »
Picture time.

I know it's gonna stretch the screen, but I'll post it anyway:

This was made for a Secret Santa exchange at another forum I go to.
The recipient was Anjil Yoshi, so that's her character there (hence the wings).

And that's way more trees than I knew what to do with.
I just hope I didn't overdo the color-dodging...

Don't know if this is really art-worthy...
It's just a quick little drawing, as I wanted to do something with pen and pencil...

...And you can probably tell that I can't hold a pen steady.

Got a new pic here.  It's a little island on the brim of a lagoon.

Fan Creations / Yoshi jump - rough animation
« on: August 01, 2007, 11:54:57 PM »
I'm not sure if this is really art-worthy (or topic-worthy, for that matter), but I was fooling around with Autodesk Animator (a very excellent 17-year-old DOS-based animation program) and made a short little animation thingy.  With a Yoshi.
It's only a rough animation, but I'm not expecting I'll ever clean it up.
(And ignore the lack of spikes/etc., and the little symbols).

So:  Yoshi jump.

General Chat / A few questions of -handedness and writing circles...
« on: August 01, 2007, 06:08:30 PM »
Alright, this question was initially out of curiosity of whether there's a correlation between the way one would circle the letter O when writing and the direction that you'd spin the stylus about the DS screen when prompted to do so (either by Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents, or a WarioWare game, or some such).
The question also came up as to whether being left- or right-handed becomes a factor as to which way one choses to write a circle.  And so this poll was made.  Go ahead and give it some thought, and then answer which combination suits you.

And if you're not sure which way you circle an O, go ahead and just write naturally (non-cursive, please) and find out.  It's not something most people think about when doing, and accuracy is important here.

...And if you happen to hold your pencil in an unusual fashion (like me), you might also state that, if you so choose.  I'm not quite sure what the "correct" way to circle an O is, but I'm sure I sort of refused to learn the "correct" way of holding a pencil.

Anyway, go forth and vote!
In the name of science!
Or something!

Video Game Chat / Which boss is the most important?
« on: July 15, 2007, 09:01:25 PM »
So, what boss is the most important to games in general?  A strange sort of question, perhaps, but I'd like to think that each particular boss role has its own place and quality that's important to a game's flow, and to the player's enjoyment and interest.
So what kind of boss is the most important?

Is it the prologue boss?
Maybe he hasn't got such an important role... maybe he doesn't even exist.  The prologue boss can often set the mood for the game or for boss fights in general.  He can be there to teach the player how to play, or might simply be a hook (something big and flashy that makes the player go "whoa", but ultimately unsubstantial).  On the other hand, is such a boss even necessary?

Is it the first boss?
The culmination of the player's first trials through the game, the first boss is often an easy sort of test, to make sure the player knows what he's doing, and to provide closure on the first leg of the game and direction for the beginning of the story (if there is one).  Easy or hard, you can't dispute that a first boss is pretty important.  And let's face it, even if the game's only got ONE boss, it's got a first boss.

Is it the second boss?
I'd like to think that the second boss holds more importance than people give him credit for.  To me, the second boss can often be more of a hook than the prologue boss.  It's the time when you trust the player enough to give him a challenging experience, one that'll catch him off-guard, shake up his nerves a bit and hopefully give him something to remember.

Is it a middlin' boss?
Different games go at different lengths, and oftentimes most of the game's bosses will lie somewhere between the two extremes.  Obviously, each boss here has to not only hold his own as a level boss, but find some way to be memorable.  The worst kind of boss is the one you forget immediately after fighting.  But then, maybe one of these bosses will hold the story's big twist...?

Is it a recurring boss?
You know the type.  The ultrosian pest who pops up just when you don't need him and gives you trouble.  Far from a requirement (and maybe not even a full boss), this guy gets merit for his tenacity.  And if he's well-done, you're SURE to remember him.  But still... is he of any importance?

Is it the penultimate boss?
This is the boss that occurs right before the last boss.  Sometimes he's the fast-paced challenge to balance out the siege that is the last boss.  Sometimes he's meant to be a phony last boss that you're supposed to fall for.  More and more nowadays, several bosses are cramming themselves into this "penultimate" position.  I guess it's supposed to be more dramatic if the challenge lasts longer, but I think that too many of 'em, one after another, can end up cheapening the significance.

Is it the final boss?
The big BANG! at the end?  The climax of the game?  None can refute the importance of such a position, but maybe it's that irrefutability, that'll put another boss above him, in terms of importance.  I mean, ya GOTTA have a last boss.  Leave him out and the game will feel... incomplete.  He's important, but he's... expected.  And, again, if the other bosses don't hold their sway, the players might lose interest before even MAKING it to this guy.

So, bosses' roles in a nutshell.  But who ends up holding the importance?  Is it the guiding battle that teaches the player?  Is it that pivotal fight where the player is hooked?  Is it the final clash at the end?
Go forth and cast thy vote.

General Chat / What phase of the Moon were you born under?
« on: July 16, 2006, 11:12:05 PM »
Here's a poll question that likely has not yet been asked...
If you don't know the phase of the Moon on your birthday (and I'd be surprised if anyone here already did (aside from those who looked it up in the chatroom)), you can find a site HERE that can provide you with an answer. Just input a month and year on the right, and look up the Moon's phase on the calendar.

And if you end up being between to of the phase definitions, use your best judgement to pick which one you're closer to.

I was born under a Third Quarter Moon, by the way.

General Chat / Happy Year of the Dog! (Chinese Zodiac)
« on: January 26, 2006, 05:05:06 PM »
Okay, so I'm a bit early, but in a few days, it's gonna be the Chinese new year!
So I thought I'd take the occasion to ask: what's your sign under the Chinese Zodiac?
You can find a whole bunch o' sites out there to find out if you don't know, but if you don't want to look, here's a decent one: (it's actually for a restaurant in Liverpool, but it's a nice one for the fact that it's not covered in ads.)

I'm a Dog, and I think the description is eerily accurate for me.  And I'm actually kinda excited that it's the Year of the Dog once more...!  I dunno; perhaps I'm just being silly...

Anyway, what're all your signs?  Are there any other Dogs out there?
