I'd have to guess that they're lumps of sugar frosted with sugar.
Remember that your first Goomba boldly you walk? When Mario touched that mushroom being brought up more largely remember that you are surprised? Miscalculate your jump that pit remember that it falls?

I guess no one here likes The Ren and Stimpy Show. The Sugar-Frosted Lumps reference was from the aforementioned show, and SFL are lumps of milk that are sugar-frosted. Tasty!
