General Chat / Re: New/Returning Members Post Here!
« on: June 19, 2019, 03:38:39 PM »
Reviving this would require providing something other forms of social media don't already. Moreover it helps if the nucleus of a community is less mainstream than Super Mario; hence why lesser exposed and/or regarded works are labled "cult." Back when this site was active and people tried to steer the conversations towards more insular (to put it diplomatically) ends, it seemed to me it'd be more productive to join a community centered on those and ask if there were any Mario fans around rather than vice-versa like people where doing.

Mario alone is nothing to center a relationship around, especially if confines aren't kept and enforced. They weren't so people drifted off.

I infrequently do get the impulse to revist this forum because it was the first online community I ever engaged with. To be perfectly honest it's also one of the first places I really tried to earnestly socialize... and the results were naturally embarrassing. Some of what I said hang on me like the chain links of Jacob Marley. Some I still stand by, however, even if my approach was flawed; the principles in general are still very much resolute.

From gleaning the last few posts, even back then I was much to old to communicate with many of you. Holy crap, most forums have a 13 age minimum policy.

Would you ever consider uploading these onto the Internet Archive, for the sake of better preservation? They have a dedicated manga section with a paltry selection of Mario manga -- just a few chapters of Super Mario-kun and Super Mario Sunshine 4 Koma (which I assume is doujinshi).

Just ignore all the barely concealed hentai, which I'm sure will never ever legally compromise the "library"'s existence.

Hey, man, I doubt you still view this forum anymore, but I just wanted to publicly apologize to you for my incredulous and insensitive remarks about your having been shot; that I had the audacity to ask for proof, instead of offering commiserations, or perhaps better yet just kept my craw shut. You had gave no indication you were ever not worthy of the benefit of the doubt, nor that you had any sort of ulterior motive for telling such a thing dishonestly. Not to suggest it was ever my prerogative to interrogate you in the first place.

2008 was a long time ago, but I was legally an adult before then. It's been eating at me for a good while now, but I put it off so long I was sure you moved on from here long since then. There are no excuses for what I said, nor for the tardiness of my apologies.

Again, I don't know if you or anyone else you know personally will ever see this. If whoever reading this is the latter please relay this to him. If you're the former, dude, I am sorry and I hope you can forgive me.

I'm almost certain it was Dayvv Brooks, who also named the koopalings. It would fit the koopalings' general musician-theme if he were named after Jon "Bowzer" Bauman of Sha Na Na fame; as would Bauman's famous "tough guy" posturing fit Bowser.

I haven't bothered asking him myself because I'm sure I wouldn't get a response, but you're free to try. Be sure to ask him about the names "podaboo" and "lakitu" while you're at it.

Speaking of Shadow Mario, does the umlaut-like marks over his "M"s have any sort of significance? I mean, aside from denoting the obvious fact that they're forgeries?

Mario Chat / Re: A simple question about Yoshi
« on: October 11, 2017, 02:21:05 PM »
Yoshi's saddle being homologous to Koopas' shells exapted for another use is clever, and something I suspected for years. It's not unprecedented either, with Spikes and Clubbas obviously being part of the Koopa family tree but whose shells are entirely vestigial.

Makes me wonder if my hypothesis that Bowser+his Clown Car are supposed to be equivalent to Lakitu+his cloud is correct after all...

Also, I wonder if Croco is what Yoshi was original supposed to be.

Maybe. Whatever publication it was mentioned also revealed Mario 2 as an edit of a different game, i think, so it's safe to assume it is right if a bit vague.

Edit: I was correct How to Win at Super Mario Bros. Games covers 1 through 3.

It's been known since How To Win At Super Mario Bros. that the koopalings were modeled after SMB3's staff, but not exactly whom. This is something that needs confirmation, but I wouldn't know how to ascertain it. As far as I can tell there wasn't any female staff credited, so who could Wendy modeled after?

Edit: I'm betting Ludwig = Miyamoto cause dat hair

My senesence, apparently! Don't argue with it!

Regardless, M&L does share a style, closer than what was directed towards Yoichi Kotabe's later on.

Even if it wasn't a rebrand, it's telling that Alpha Dream never did a follow-up to Tomato Adventure, but four M&Ls. The latter has entirely supplemented the former. Maybe they don't care one way or the other, maybe they had no intention of continuing TA,  but an idiosyncratic vision wouldn't have vanished if there wasn't a precedent to diverge from.
