I suspect it could be because of the rumble and speaker features, which I use very rarely. In fact, when the Wii says "The power in your remote is low," ignore it. That's just when a quarter of the energy is left, which means it could still be used for a long while. When I got SPM, I began getting the "Low Battery" around Chapter 3, and then actually replaced them when I reached the end of Chapter 7, many, many hours away, when I started getting "Communications have been interrupted" errors.
