I know how you feel.  But some of the characters are a little too the same, and it would be better if they were replaced by more original characters with different attacks.  Although they should really make a SSB with 1,000 characters.  Then nobody could complain.

The only Smash Bros. characters I'd be okay with dropping are Dr. Mario, Roy and Pichu, becuase they're clones of Mario, Marth and Pikachu, rather than truly separate characters.
My cousin would be really upset if they got rid of Roy.  He's her best character.  I'd rather have Marth be dropped.  Roy has too much fanbase to be dropped.  I agree with you on Pichu.

I think I posted this idea in the SSBB suggestions area.
Similar characters with slightly different movesets are to become costumes.
-Mario has has 4 or five costumes, and then one could be the Doc. with his slight move change.
-Pikachu could have his hats and then be Pichu or Raichu.
-Peach's Daisy costume could be replaced by a real daisy character with slight changes.
-Link could have Young Link, Cel-Da link, and maybe classic link.

Kojinka: They can't drop Marth because he was the main character in the first Fire Emblem game ever created. Roy should be dropped because he is a clone and was only placed in Melee to advertize for his game, FE6, wich hadn't been released yet. Character's placement should not be decided on fanbase(although I don't which 'fanbase' you were refering to when it came to Roy). Sakurai said this himself.

I didn't say I wanted them to be dropped. I only said that if they had to drop someone, it should be Doc,Pichu and Roy. By the way, Ganondorf and Falco were never intended to be clones, so they could stay and get new movesets. I'd also like to say that Young Link should only stay if they change him to his Celda look.

I never said I wanted Marth to be dropped.  I just said that if I had to choose between Marth and Roy, it'd be Marth because I'm better with Roy, and he's my cousin's best character.  If they drop Roy, they better make up for the loss of a very good character by raising the power of Marth's attacks.  Keep Roy, replace Pichu with Raichu, drop Doc. in order to make room for more original Mario characters.

I beleive Sakurai stated that the character's physics will be redesigned from the ground up, so don't fret over Roy being gone because chances are Marth will be changed for the better. Same thing with Doc and Pichu. As for Falco, Ganondorf and Young Link, they should be given all-new movesets.

That would be nice.  The moves are what really make the character special and different from all the rest.   I mean it is a fighting game for goodness sake!   Can we make everyones' moves different?

The only reason the clones were even there in the first place was because they wanted to beef up the roster in a really short time, so they take a character, change his physics a bit, and bam! A new character. Hwever, this isn't entirely bad as some players actually like these new physics and would be a bit upsset if those character were taken out. Now me, I only approve of characters being removed if the physics are being changed, which I'm pretty sure was confirmed by Sakurai himself. But on the other hand, If the physics do go unaltered, then no one should be taken out as that would be alienating some players. Some of the clones weren't even intended to be clones in the first place, such is the case with Falco and Ganondorf, so if the physics are changed, maybe the movesets for these characters can be changed entirely to suit the way these characters were originally intended to be portrayed. That's my few cents.

Not all clones should be dropped. BUT, all clones should be changed so they're not clones anymore. Think of it like this: We haven't heard of many new characters... but most of them will probably be hidden! Duh! Nintendo didn't go around announcing  "Mr. Game & Watch will be a secret character that you will work your but off to get, along with Mewtwo, Ganondorf, Marth, Roy, and many more that we will tell you about tomorrow!!" before SSBM's release, did they? No. They're SECRET characters because you don't know about them.
All your dreeeeeeams begiiin to shatterrrrrr~

I said that the clones should be changed only if all of the other character's physics were being changed. Why? Because if the physics weren't being changed, then the players of the previous game will be angry that the characters they once played, with the physics that were similar to another character but still different(i.e. clones), will be gone in favor of a new moveset. Changing a clone's moveset is like taking out a whole character, and if they do that to the clones, but not the rest of the characters, then some people will be very upset.
