I really have no idea whether or not you people have seen this or not, but I came across videos where a guy explores various stages in SMB3 and shows how small they really are.
I think it's pretty neat.
PART 1
PART 2

EDIT:
jmdblazer proposed the idea to alter the subject to make it better, so I did so. Thanks for the idea.

wow I never thought that that was how the levels were set up
Gently push a piece of the tube containing the intersection along the fourth dimension, out of the original three dimensional space.

I wouldn't have thought so either. I think it's cool how someone explored this.

Didn't think it'd be set up that way either. Kind of makes sense though, to make the most of area space without creating a bunch of different areas. Going into it I thought the video would say how small the overall size of levels were. Anyway, after seeing that, I just wish I knew codes to do similar effects in other games so I too could destroy impassable walls. That's just too cool.
You didn't say wot wot.

I saw a video that had some codes (including the ice-block code)
It was only compatible with the NES and Game Genie, but I could find it if you'd like.

It's interesting that the Japanese end of 5-1 is in the USA version albeit without the card. XD

Yeah, I guess they put in a new ending, but didn't feel the need to take out the original ending!

Doesn't really spoil the game, but fascinating nonetheless!

5-3: I don't think it a secret exit instead the game does not load a different tile set as the room does not change this also accounts for graphic glitches. You can check out these other secrets in a Super Mario Bros. 3 level editor. I also think Nintendo used these shortcuts to make debugging easier.
