Did everyone forget about the grey goomba in Super Mario Brothers? He never fights you...but Bowser turns into one when you fireball him to death.

All of the creatures in SMB change colour depending on whether they're outside (normal), in a cave (blue) or in a castle (grey).
Now a real forgotten enemy would be Bunbun... the cool spear-lobbing bee in SML.

The known explanation would be the SMB pallete swap from outdoor(colors) to inside the castle(grey). Since bricks are brown and need to be grey in the castle, that means everything brown is turned grey also(ex. - goombas).
