I bought it about a month ago, but it comes in tomorrow afternoon. This means that when I'm done with class I'll go down to the store and wait there.

I played it all day. The DK Bongo controller is really, really well made, feels good, and its microphone is very sensitive (adjustable in-game, also). Controller gets an A+.

The actual game has an incredibly whacked song selection, ranging from dorky (to me) kid tunes to great new renditions of the Mario and Zelda themes. Tons of "golden oldies" also. I'm a fan of the more J-pop, techno, anime music style of DDR and some other rhythm games, but this is a -great- average American family songlist. Nintendo knows what they're doing to appeal to the masses, which is what rhythm games were designed to do in the first place. Would a n00b rather play a six button arcade fighter or ... dance? But I digress. It has a hearty number of songs and none are actually bad.

The graphics are pretty weak, consisting of just a Donkey Kong Country-esque background that cycles through about 5 different locations (cave, temple, jungle, beach) and Donkey Kong Country looking Donkey and Diddy and banana bird and that elephant from 3 running around. Balloons and flowers shoot around when you do rolls. Basically, the graphics are weak but who cares in a non-plot-type rhythm game?

The interface that tells you what to drum is pretty good. It's the standard drumming game one line with circles scrolling right to left. It took me about three hours to get to the point where I didn't have to think at all about what my hands were going to do. It would have been better still, though, if they would have had a column per drum and put the clap symbols in the middle of those columns. Gitaroo Man and DDR prove the effectiveness of different columns/areas for reading different buttons. B+

I haven't tried any multiplayer because the separate DK Bongos don't come in until tomorrow. Each store in the US apparently right now only gets 2 DK Bongos to sell seperately, though. After the clerk told me this, I "reserved" one. Hee hee. Two player should be cool, though, because I believe the drum parts are different. It also adds POW blocks and slot machines and roll competitions. I probably won't get to play 4-player until Christmas break, though.

Difficulty: It's hard for me to judge difficulty because I'm such a grizzled rhythm game veteran and I had absolutely no problem beating the very hardest songs (It's going to be a bit rough getting a Gold on each, though). Observing other people play, however, taught me that Chimp is easy enough for pure rhythmless n00bs to learn on. Difficulty scales nicely upward from there. Since you have to unlock the Hard difficulty for all songs laboriously and separately, I saw my fair share of what the easier versions are like. Don't worry about Donkey Konga being too hard for you or anything.

Major complaints: #1 They cut off the last two verses of the DK Rap. That is horrible. It just stupidly fades out. I am really annoyed at this faux pas. Many songs are way longer, so I have no clue why they butchered one of the coolest songs in the game.
#2 The different drum sets you unlock are cool, but many of them have sounds that are much too long to be a drum "beat". I suppose it wouldn't matter on low difficulties with more spaced out beats, but since I was playing mostly on Gorilla (hard), using something like the Car Set resulting in not even hearing the song, but instead a nonstop ruckus of cars screeching and crashing and honking. Cool in a way, but not hearing the song makes it hard to play well ;).

Some Sets sound fantastic with certain songs, though, resulting in many a dopy grin on my face at their sound. Some recommendations:

Dog Set w/ "Bingo"  When I first played Bingo I didn't really like it, but when I played it with the Dog Set, it was Super Fun ^_^

NES Set w/ "Super Mario Bros. Theme"  The NES Set is Donkey Kong sound effects.

Whip Set w/ "Whip It"  Devo's Whip It is one of the most fun songs to play and with a set where clapping (which they put on the whip crack parts) makes a guy scream "YeeOUCH!" is sadistic and gratifying at the same time. Or maybe just mostly hilarious.

Most of the coolest sounding sets I haven't gotten yet because I spent all my Coins on getting all 33 songs' Gorilla difficulty unlocked for the longest time. Mario Set, Zelda Set, Kirby Set, Orchestra Set, and others are very expensive but could provide even more potential coolness.

Minigames: Haven't gotten them yet

Conclusion: This game is super-fun. I hope it becomes very popular and Ninty cranks out the sequels. I also really like the DK Bongos themselves, so I'm hopeful that more games will come down the pipe that use them. Let's hear it for innovation.

[Editor's Note: Lizard Dude needs sleep badly due to a horrible sequence of events last night that resulted in him being locked away from his bookbag and having to redo a bunch of Japanese 101 homework that was due the next morning and staying up until 5:00AM and then not getting to nap because of the insane power of Donkey Konga. We apologize for any weirdness in form or grammar or syntax or style or look of this post. Thank you.]

I agree. This game is insanely fun. Of course, I don't care about the graphics muhc 'cause you're not really moving or anything. The controls are simple enough for my 6 year old nephew and video game-imcompetent older sister to play on, and the difficulties are very well balanced. My nephew can accomplish some of the songs by himself, but others, I gotta sit in the room and do the claps for him, heh heh. Meanwhile, Gorilla is ridiculously hard, and I love it, being a long time and accomplished musician, despite the fact I am able to beat most of them. Unlocking is a little boring, but it keeps the game fresh, I guess. I definately would like to see a sequel with more songs.

Of course, my only complaint... Why in the world did they not put "Do The Donkey Kong" in it?!! COME ON! Donkey Kong music game. Song about Donkey Kong. DUDE, that is like like one of the most blatantly obvious choices they could've put in. Oh well. One more thing, which isn't a bad play on their part, merely my personal taste. I'd have liked to seen less pop songs from current artists, and more oldschool rock, classical, and/or game songs. Oh and a nother cool bonus, the full version of the Pokemon theme song is in it. I don't think they had ever played the full version in the U.S. for anything. Oh, and the techno remix of Turkish March? *smooch* I love it. The best thing about this game, is the fact that people can no longer tell me "Yeah well, PS2 is better because it has DDR." Sorry buddy, Gamecube doesn't need DDR now.

All in all... I love this game.

You don't choose characters. But it's not like they do anything. I forgot about "Do The Donkey Kong", though! Good idea!

DDR is still cool in its own way. Cooler, even, -I'd- say, but that's just personal preference. Maybe becuase I'm mad good at DDR.

I don't think buying another bongo controller is worth it. For the one time every month you ever have people over(unless you're in college like Lizard Dude), you could still use a controller, and even so, it's very possibly to still have fun taking turns. And lastly, $35? Come on...

DK Rap is my least favorite song from a Nintnendo game (that I know of).

I always have at least one other person to play with.  My wife.  Not Bob, my invisible frienc.  He supposedly doesn't exist.

I got a second set of drums today.

Has anyone used the Pelican version?  I here they are bigger, but are they better or worse in any way?

How dare thou blasphemy the wondrous D Krap, eh, DK rap.  That beautiful melody of gobbledygook has provided more than just a hearty chuckle from the deepest depths of my soul.  You havest no right to disrespect it!

Yikes, I just got a really stupid thought right now (along with everything else I think of).  Has anyone tried to play the drums with their butt yet?  That would be really hard but stinkin' funny!

C'mon!  No one's tried that before?  You guys are just weird (or maybe I just am).  Well, I've got a better idea anyway.  Has anyone tried sharing a bongo controller with someone by hitting only one drum while someone hits the other?

I haven't tried that, but I have played one-player and passed the drums between songs.  We don't play the duets or challenges much now because we want to get coin and unlock stuff.  (My wife would rather play The Sims: Bust'n Out.)

I have tried several differernt things for clapping.  Snaping my fingers. I have found that I am not good at snapping with my left hand.  Tapping the side of a drum with a pinky and ring finger.  This works well because it takes little movement and your hand is still close to the drum for the next beat.  Slapping your leg.  Alternatively slapping your legs with both hands works good for clap rolls.  Alternating hands you make a "clap" with is also helpful and many songs so that the other hand stays over the drum for the next beat.

I find it best to put the drum between my knees, but change their positions and my clapping technique often to mix it up and save my self from repeatitive strain injuries.

I played the challenge where you see how many song you can play in a row once.  I got bored with it after 30 something songs.  They should have allowed you to pick songs, sound effects, etc. in that mode.

I love this game, but spent more time last night researching the Nintendo DS underground internet advertizement.  Donkey Konga is too loud to play correctly while others are sleeping.

The game can be played with a standard controller or with the sound off.  Has anyone tried either?

Has anyone played with their feet?

I got gold DKs on all the monkey levels.  Anyone else?

I haven't tried using a GCN controller yet, but has anyone else?  How does it work?

I tried to use the drums in Mario Pinball Land using my Game Boy Player, but it didn't work.  Has anyone used the drums on any other game?

Which song has the most easily available coins?

Which drum sound(s) do you like?  The barnyard set is funny, but I prefer the Latin set for most songs.  I haven't unlocked them all yet.

Is there a guide that shows all the songs beats?

Have you memorized any songs?

Do you think we will get a Donkey Konga 2?

Sorry for all the interogation, but this game is so cool.

I got gold DKs on all the monkey levels. Anyone else?

I haven't gotten all golds on any level, but I do have all silver and gold on Gorilla, which is pretty much the only difficulty I play. Is there any sort of reward for all golds?

I haven't tried using a GCN controller yet, but has anyone else? How does it work?

Me neither.

I tried to use the drums in Mario Pinball Land using my Game Boy Player, but it didn't work. Has anyone used the drums on any other game?

I was wondering about that myself. I don't think the drums send a signal for a specific button, though, do they?

Which song has the most easily available coins?

Good question. I just play what's fun and try to forget about coins. Then it goes faster.

Which drum sound(s) do you like? The barnyard set is funny, but I prefer the Latin set for most songs. I haven't unlocked them all yet.

The Whip It Set rules all.

Is there a guide that shows all the songs beats?

Yes, the screen. ;)

Have you memorized any songs?

No. :(

Do you think we will get a Donkey Konga 2?

Yes!

Sorry for all the interogation, but this game is so cool.

LD, I think you should have put a blank line between questions to make it easier to read.  Thanks for the quick answers.

Is there any sort of reward for all golds?

Not that I found.  Maybe if you get gold on all songs at all three difficulty levels, but I doubt it.

I don't think the drums send a signal for a specific button, though, do they?

I don't think so either, but don't know for sure.

The Whip It Set rules all.

I also like that one, but thought the animal sounds were funnier and that the bonga and Latin sound went with more songs.

Is there a guide that shows all the songs beats?

Yes, the screen. ;)

LOL.

Do you think we will get a Donkey Konga 2?

Yes!

I hope so!

What would you think if Donkey Konga had the symbols scroll vertically with different symbols in columns like in DDR?  Would it be better or worse?

I don't really think it matters which way they scroll, although bottom to top gives you less time to see stuff in advance.

I do think it would be better if each hand had its own column and claps were in the middle, though. After so much DDR, everything in one line just seems too much confusion. Interpreting where things are is easier than interpreting what symbol is coming at you, all on one line.

I thought up a pretty good idea while playing the other day...

Rather than releasing a sequel, they should've made the game, so that you could store up to 30 songs on it. However, they could then release Donkey Konga e-Reader Cards containing song data, which you scan on the GBA, and send to the GCN using the GCN/GBA Link Cable, a la Animal Crossing, to unlock new songs on it. Then, you could get rid of songs you don't want *cough* Diddy's Ditties/Campfire Medley*cough* and replace them with songs you do like, similar to the plan they have for SMA4. This would actually probably sell well, bring the e-Reader back, and make everyone (or at least everyone with a GBA/e-Reader/GBA/GCN Link Cable) happy.

Come on, you must admit, I did come up with something pretty genius, there.

Sorry I'm posting so late but I just wanted to tell you my idea.  Here it is: when the next Nintendo comes out it could have that CD recording thingamabob like the Xbox has.  You stick your favorite music CDs and MP3s into the machine and it records all the songs you like.  Then you turn the game on you can transfer the songs straight into the game and play any song you want!  That would rock!  Whatdya think?

No, Yoshisaurus, that would be impossible to do because the effort to make a rhythm for every single song ever made would be ridiculously hard to do, and would take forever to accomplish. Plus, it doesn't account for the number of new songs generated by people everyday.

However, if it were possible, I s'pose it would be a good idea, although, lots of people would probabl just say Nintendo is stupid for copying X-Box

I just got the game on Oct 11, and it RULZ! I think Karaoke Revolution has something similar to this, where you actually by the expansion packs with extra songs and upload them onto your game... But I doubt that Nintendo will make a whole market just for Donkey Konga

I would say that "We Will Rock You" is by far the best song up there. It's so much fun to pound along with the music just the way it sounds, and it's somewhat amusing to see DK doing the "pound-pound-clap" think along with you. My main concern about this game is that it will get boring, trying to get gold DKs on every Gorilla song. I probably won't try to clear the whole game (unless there's something you get for clearing it).

But anyways, this game is, as Strong Bad would say it, "pimp-ed outtt", and is awesome except for the fact that you can't use drumsets! I was so freakin angry when I read that!

Karaoke Revolution was going to do that, but it was popular enough that they just started making true sequels, leaving a useless menu option on the original.

I'd rather wait for Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat. Donkey Konga seems like one of those games that will get boring fast. The controller on the other hand is sweet, dispite the fact the games its compatable with is limited.

Okay here's the story, I know I'm a few months late but here it is none the less:

I took my nephew to buy himself something with his gift card at Toys R Us, I did not plan to purchase anything for myself. I spied the Gamecube demo area, so I noticed that Donkey Konga was there. I played the game for the first time ever and decided to buy it not 5 minutes later, this game rules.

Time slowed and Reality bent.
But on and on the Eggman went.
