As many on the forums guessed and/or feared, Petey Piranha, originally appearing in Super Mario Sunshine, is the first boss character announced for Super Smash Bros. Brawl.  In the earlier Subspace Emissary (Adventure Mode) video, Petey had locked up both Peach and Zelda in cages and Kirby was ready to face off against the newly-fearsome monster.  The update says that you can only save one of the women...

...and the other probably gets carried off to the next boss. Or else it's just how you unlock them and you have to play that mode twice to get them both.

The real question is, will bosses be unlockable as "secret" characters or will it just be a Action Replay hack-character like Giga Bowser?

I have a feeling they won't be playable unless you hack the game. It's tradtion by now, except now we get more than just Smash originals as bosses.

Another boss that's non-playable, like Giga Bowser and Master and Crazy hands in SSBM.
The Mario series is the best! It has every genre in video games but RTS'! It also has a plumber who does different roles, a princess, and a lot of odd creatures who don't seem to poop!

I imagine you will have to play through twice to unlock them, as LD said.
Remember that your first Goomba boldly you walk? When Mario touched that mushroom being brought up more largely remember that you are surprised? Miscalculate your jump that pit remember that it falls?

Or maybe the un-rescued one might suffer some torturous consequences from Ancient Minister or some other boss (Giga Bowser, anyone?).
I don't know if it's me, but i completely love both Mario and Peach to death. I guess i'm obsessed about both of them, huh?

This is awesome!  I don't know why anyone would "fear" the idea of Petey being in the game.
Maybe there is more to me than there is to me...

XD

This is super awesome.

The first thing I said this morning when I checked the update was

"Petey is wearing polka dot undies!"

And sorry Zellie, but I'm savin' Peachy. XD

Oh mannnnnnn... This means, I can't feed Daisy to Petey?
Sorry LD--check Petey's emblem. Odd they wouldn't brand him with the Mushroom even if he IS only a boss. And... what can AR NOT do?

I imagine you will have to play through twice to unlock them, as LD said.

But they're available from the beginning. They weren't branded with the Challenger tag.

Thankfully Petey isn't playable, and I hope if we can play through Adventure Mode with either princess, because it'd be a shame if that mode is limited to only certain characters. Maybe it'll be similar to Sonic Adventure 2 where using different characters gets you different POVs and stages.
As a game that requires six friends, an HDTV, and skill, I can see why the majority of TMK is going to hate on it hard.

I'm going to make two guesses right here, guys. My first guess is that whichever character you choose to save will then become playable in an Adventure Mode. Then, you use either that character or another unlocked one to go through the Adventure Mode and save the other princess from Petey.

Or...

Petey devours the princess you don't save, and then you team up with a computer-controlled Peach/Zelda and Kirby/Mario to weaken Petey enough to make him burp her up. Then you'll probably either earn those two as playable characters or have to face them on their home stage at the same time (or separately) to unlock them.

I'd also like to say that I am unaffected by the appearance of Petey Piranha, but am slightly unnerved by the appearance of Pokémon Trainer as a character and rather angry that Diddy Kong, out of all other possible characters in the game, is going to be playable.

I just think Diddy Kong seems a little monotonous. Sure, everybody loves the little guy, but I just think there are other video game characters out there that deserve a spot more. A few examples include Sonic, Paper Mario (yes, he could be a little monotonous of Mario), and Mega Man. Even a Metroid Prime hunter could be in Brawl. I guess I just don't really have an interest in the Donkey Kong series, and think that there are better possible fighters out there than Diddy Kong. He just doesn't feel like a good fighter to me is all.

If Paper Mario makes it into Brawl my eyes will surely roll around, glaze over, melt, and I will drink them from a cup. There truly is more reason for Toad to be playable than Paper Mario.
<offtopic>Something interesting they could have done in Melee... hmmm... maybe it isn't too late. Young Link should have had a move to transform between Hylian, Deku, Goron and Zora as in Majora's Mask. It's pretty clear that we'll get no Wolf Link in Brawl and possibly no Young Link at all, but this idea would be pretty cool. Trophy count goes up by nine, yes...

Well, I believe they said that Young Link isn't going to return in playable form, replacing him with Wind Waker Link instead. Though, I guess things could have changed since last year.

Yuji Naka doesn't work for Sega anymore, although since the whole M&S@tOG thing is going down, I just don't know anymore.
I don't know if Keiji Inafune would want Mega Man in or not.

P.S. In Japan, Mega Man is somehow only played by kids.
That was a joke.

As much as I loved the idea of Toad being playable, I don't think a franchise that already had four characters representing it deserves another over a franchise that only had one so far. Especially if said franchise is as awesome as Donkey Kong.

Toad will not be in it, based on the image of Peach using a Mushroom Retainer/Toad as a shield once again in this fight. Thought I wouldn't Toad being playable.

False french radio rumors ftl.

The same source also said Ice Climbers and Mr. Game and Watch would be replaced with Bowser Jr. and Ridley.

Personally, I don't trust anything if it doesn't come from Sakurai's blog.

I suposed your talking about Mario, which has 6 characters, Dr. Mario, Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi.

I believe Yoshi is considered his own franchise in the game, possibly due to the different icon than the rest of them.

Meh. I guess the Mushroom emblem just doesn't fit him (like it fits Bowser, either...).
Edit: You know... every character could have their own unique emblem and victory tune. This obviously won't happen, as Bowser and Mario already share the Mushroom, but it isn't impossible. Mario and Luigi's emblems could be changed to M and L, like Wario's W. Peach could keep the Mushroom, as she rules the kingdom (unless Toad came by and stole it). Bowser's would be that silhouetted face of his, as in SM64 (die.). Yoshi could keep his egg. Mario's victory would stay the same, Luigi's could be from SMB2, Peach has something from SPP that could be used, Bowser could have the classic SMB game over tune, Yoshi's should be changed to SMW level clear music (just because). If Dr. Mario were to stay his emblem would be a Megavitamin. For the Zelda characters, each would have their part of the Triforce filled in with the others empty. Meta-Knight's emblem could be his mask. It'd work, all of it would... there's always something.

So I guess that means Peach won't be playable, based on the image of her in a cage held by Petey Pirahna (meaning the stupid girl went and got herself kidnapped. again..)

Don't use such a lame arguement as that. I'm sure that if they were to make Toad playable, then it wouldn't be a problem for him to just happen to share the same colors as the generic retainer that Peach uses as a B move. That's a very narrow minded thing to say anyway, as moves can be changed around. From SSB to SSBM, Link and Ness's B moves became their over+B moves.

The thing that people need to remember about the SSB games is that anything is possible.

Toad isn't the only Toad in the Mario Universe, though.

There is only one Toad of importance, and his name is Toad. They should have stuck with calling the rest of them Mushroom People, and the ones that work for Peach the Retainers.

How come nobody gets this confused when talking about Yoshi or Pikachu? There is totally more than one of both of them, yet people constantly say things like Toad is too generic.

I am getting kind of sick of it, personally. He's got as much chance at being playable than anybody else.

Possibly even moreso, since the SSB series is supposed to be about classic characters beating up other classic characters, and Toad is about as classic as they come in the Mario series: he's been there from the start!

I'm sorry to bring this to light, but... If you notice, in Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Sunshine, Toad does not appear. Instead, Toads do. And, these ordinary ones wear vests that match the spots on their heads. THE Toad always has a blue vest and red spots (except SMB2, but that's because... you know.). Contradictions to this idea are Luigi's Mansion, Paper Mario and others...
Yeah, so, Toad isn't in many non-spin-off games as an individual... Yoshi is in the same situation. He's always there for spin-offs, rarely in real games, but you can't really tell the difference between him and another green Yoshi. Super Mario 64 DS is a rarity for this.
Toad's arguments are all valid (though there's not really a specific Pikachu of note, unless you count Yellow version, as I don't accept the anime to pertain to the games. But if that were the case he'd be under the control of Red, right?). But... it just wouldn't fit. If the Toad Peach uses as a shield had a matching vest and head to make him seem more like a Toad rather than Toad, it'd work... Super Paper Mario is Toad's most recent non-spin-off appearance, at the game's opening. Luigi addresses him as such, doesn't he? Maybe all he needs is more dialogue and recognition in games, a more distinct personality... more to distinguish himself from that Toad over there. I think making the matching vest thing more consistent would be the easiest way.

I realise he wasn't present in Donkey Kong, SMB , or SMS. It seems to me that in most of the recent games, they are trying to pass off the red Retainer as Toad.

I guess saying that the PM series doesn't have THE Toad is kind of right (even though most of them in the first game have his coloring about them). You're right, Luigi does address Toad at the beginning of SPM. It seems Nintendo likes to put Toad at the beginning of the Mario RPG's.

I would really love it if they somehow tried to make Toad more distinguishable from the others. They've got a great character here, with lots of potential, and they are just letting him rot while the like of Petey and Bowser Jr are taking the big roles (though, since both of them are bad guys, I don't see how Toad could become evil..)
