I don't know offhand, but I'd say it is done using Javascript rather than just HTML.  You might try searching yahoo for 'javascript archive', there are many good resources out there.

I dunno, SMB was great and has a lot of memories for me.  It just seems like they kept getting better and better up until the N64.  My absolute favorite games would have to be Mario RPG and Yoshi's Island.
