Sony Playstation3 News

Playstation 3 supported by Foxconn

According to the Taiwan Economic News on 6 July 2002, the Taiwanese electronics giant Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd. (FoxConn) is aiming at joint development with Sony for the Playstation 3 console. Foxconn president Terry Guo announced that Foxconn, which is the largest privately held company in Taiwan for its turnover, has formed a Research & Development team for PlayStation 3 with Sony. [Taipei, July 6 2002]

PS3 console to be released in 2005

Japanese media reported on May 6th that the PS3 console is in development. The goal is to make new processor technology, called "grid" about 200x faster than current console technology. This is almost achieving their original goal of making the PS3 1000(!) times faster than the PS2. This goal was publically set by Mr Okamoto, the Senior VP and Chief Technical Officer of Sony Computer Entertainment, at the 2002 Game Developers Conference in San Jose, California.

The Cell - Power for Playstation 3 and ...more!

The heart of the Playstation3 will be a new chip (or rather chip set) developed by Sony, Toshiba, and IBM. The companies will collectively invest more than $400 million in the next five years to design a "supercomputer-on-a-chip" for the PS3. The name for this technology is "grid" (formerly called "cell") and appears to be targeted squarely at the possibilities of parallel and distributed computing over the internet. Grid computing is a variation of distributed computing, and presumably involves networked game machines sharing software, processing power and data. Okamoto also said that networking applications including downloadable software would be integral to Sony's Playstation3 console. A recent report (May 5 2002) from the Japanese News Agency Kyodo said that the Playstation 3 would work over superfast fiber optics connections and would be Sony's first console to run games without a digital video disc. Sony also is considering offering the new chip to other companies for use in televisions and electronics equipment, Kyodo said.

Excerpt from an IBM press release:

Code-named "Cell," the new microchips will employ the world's most advanced research technologies and chip-making techniques, including copper wires, silicon-on-insulator (SOI) transistors and low-K dielectric insulation, with features smaller than 0.10 microns -- 1,000 times thinner than a human hair. The result will be consumer devices that are more powerful than IBM's Deep Blue supercomputer, operate at low power and access the broadband Internet at ultra high speeds. Cell will be designed to deliver "teraflops" of processing power.

Present memory not fast enough for Playstation3

Kenshi Manabe, senior vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment Semiconductor division, said the Playstation3 will need memory with incredibly high speed and tens-of-gigahertz bandwidth. "I'm not sure that even what we have seen for DDR-II on the present (industry) memory roadmaps will be high enough performance for us."

"It's graphics, Jim... but not as we know it"

Richard Doherty, an analyst for Envisioneering, Seaford, N.Y., said that PS3 will not have a graphics engine as we know it. Instead, the Cell's architecture is likely to replace the traditional game console graphics processor model on which the Xbox and Gamecube are based, that use NVidia and ATI GPUs, respectively. The Playstation 3, as well as other applications that will use the Cell, will take advantage of the CPU's "self healing" capability. "Self-healing computers will be programmed not to go down," Doherty said. "Bus and processor areas are automatically corrected using a new meshed era redundancy technology." The Cell's compression engine, for example, will use a multi-processor engine to reconstruct missing pixels or other missing features due to glitches in a streaming PS3 game or video.

Sony's vision: PS3 as the all-encompassing home system?

If Sony's aspirations succeed, then the Playstation 3 will not be a pure video game console, but rather measure the amount of milk left in the fridge, record TV programs to hard-disk, automatically download new software, perform Tera-flop operations and a variety of other things. In short, if one can automate, computerize, network or electrify a process, then the PS3 should be able to take on the task.

"Playstation 3 Diet", anyone?

Today, a system like this sounds futuristic. A super-console, replacing TV, computer, game console and complete home electronics system in one wont be cheap. Rumors are making rounds that the PS3 will be sold in two versions, one that is the do-all Playstation 3 version with all the bells and whistles (perhaps including laying golden eggs as well?) and one that is, yikes(!), just a pure video game console.

Either way, the Playstation3 is still long away, and it may well be possible that the "super-do-it-all" version is eventually marketed under a different name. May we suggest Superstation? Or... Homestation? Here at psreporter.com, while not technophobic or fearing the future, we would feel more comfortable with a PS3 that does only one thing, but very well... to provide us with great video game experiences.

---------------------------------------------

As you have read, the PS3 is going to be a supercomputer capable of not only playing videogames, but also combining everything feasable in the computer world onto an extremely powerful processing unit! Downloadable software will never be the same...

Personally, I am NOT excited to hear this news about PS3, why would Sony want to combine a videogame console with futuristic computer technology?! Videogames and computers DON'T go well together... That's why Nintendo and Microsoft designed their consoles to be strictly for videogames ONLY! Stupid Sony and there crappy PS3...

Remember that commercial for the PlayStation 9? What ever happened to that?

Weekly Frostbite Quote #3:

Girl: Hey, we`re all calling this guy up and yelling at him. You want to try?
Frostbite: Why would I do that?
Girl: He`s really mean. He calls people crackers.
Frostbite: So? Why should I care?
Girl: You`d want to be called an hors d`oeuvre?
Frostbite: If you think crackers are hors d`oeuvres, you must be poor.
Girl: Ew!

What happened was that I got so mad at them that I went and bound and gagged them.
Man, that commercial was scary.

Oh, and did you know that Sony loses money with every PS2 it sells?
It's like they think they're going to have something so great (yeah right) that they spend all their money on something that costs too much and if they were to sell it at a price at which they would make a profit, no one would buy it.

that is a stupid move for Sony. It was understandable to make Playstation 2 when Playstation was going out of date, but I think it is kind of stupid to release a Playstation 3 when Playstation 2 is in date with the other systems and is doing quite well.

One of the reasons i went with GAMECUBE was because it wouldn't be obsolete in a year.

Frighteningly enough, a mega-console might do well. One of the main arguments I hear from Xbox fans is that the Gamecube sucks because it "only plays video games". Err, personally, that's the only reason I buy video games. I certainly don't want Mario and Kirby to expertly shuffle-play my music archive or tape Survivor. ...Not that I'd mind.... Well, anyways, depending on the quality of the TV and other stuff, it might do well. Everything would be serviced by one well-known company, instead of buying a bunch of cheap electronics from gawd knows where. I'm a loyal Nintendo fangirl and all, but I can see why Sony would be toying with an idea like that. If they can make it cheap and profitable, it just might work, crazier things have happened.

It was a fake commercial, saying something about how they just had the PS9 upgraded for direct olfactory stimulation, then there was some dude kissing a big fat squid lady underwater, then a few seconds later, they have this:
PS2: The Beginning
Oh yeah, and at one point they showed lots o' people with clear orb things in their hands with electrodes stuck to their heads.
Evil, huh?

Sony is more evil than Microsoft... I am glad I broke, er... accidentally misused my PlaySation - PSOne.

If Nintendo ever decides to make a super-powerful console capable of turning on your garage lights (among other things) with infrared sensors, would you buy it? As long as it still had the great Nintendo-quality games we all know and love, I would definately buy one!

If you want a DVD palyer, get a DVD player. If you want a CD player get a CD player. Video game systems should just be for games. And Nintendo has stuck to that rule perfectly.

ACK... scary thoughts time...
I have actually been contemplating getting an old PSX so I can play a few of the games that should have been on Nintendo but never were... scary, huh?

But like just to complete my collection, you know? The Mega Man games and possibly that updated version of Chrono Trigger...

And I've got it figured out... get one for real cheap at a non-retail used game shop, and that way, I would never be supporting Sony! Yippee! Anyway, I probably won't get one though... don't think I could stand the horrendous loading time.
That was a joke.

You know what's kind of ironic, Nintendo refused to use the CD-ROM technology in the Nintendo 64 because they were afraid of long loading times. But now they are using a more advanced mini-DVD technology with the GameCube...which is obviously faster than normal CD-ROMS.

I wonder why Nintendo hadn't decided to update the current CD-ROM technology with the N64... They could've teamed up with Panasonic back then to create a more advanced CD-ROM. Oh well, too late now!

How would Nintendo have lost money by using a CD-ROM format with the N64? Nintendo is now using DVD technology with the GameCube, and they're doing just fine!

That was then. This is now. They had to do lots of research for like three years before the GCN launch to figure out how to make their mini DVDs cheap and fast-loading.

Beware? Beware what? I mean sure in my opinion Nintendos not the best of the best but it would take alot to take it down. PS3 may give Nintendo a little healthy competition but Nintendo always has bounced back. Unless PS3 is so unbelievably awesome that even CW would kill for one or Nintendo makes some horrible mistake nothing bad will happen. Don't fear it, don't bash it, just embrace it or ignore it.

Ooze, do you have the same feelings with Xbox? Don't get me wrong, Xbox is a pretty decent system, the only problem is that Microsoft is too nieve to realize that it is failing in most countries of the world besides the U.S.!

Oh well, I guess Microsoft will learn their lesson once they suffer teh agony of defeat from Sony and Nintendo!

I have the exact same feelings about XBOX. I dont really like it all that much but I dont bash it constantly like a few people in here do to all non Nintendo systems. I'll buy it when its a dead system though. Oh and for the guys in here who are strictly Nintendo loyal, 1 have you guys ever even played the other systems out there 2 what will you do if something horrible happens and Nintendo goes bye bye 3 dont you think youre limiting your gaming experience? Hey I'm just asking. Im not trying to flame anyone.

1. Yes, I have played "the other" systems. What I played, I didn't like. There were a few mildly good titles for PlayStation, but then, that was PSX, not PS2.
2. How could something bad happen to Nintendo? It's a scientific impossibility.
3. Even though I am a Nintendo-only guy myself, I have played stuff on other systems, and there's nothing that I feel is even worth playing on Xbox or PS2. Like, I remember I played Munch's Oddysee once and it seemed like a ripoff of Mario... so really, Nintendo has the whole spectrum of gaming on their systems. I would like to see some new Square RPGs on GCN, but other than that, there's nothing I feel I am missing by not playing the sub-standard consoles.

But seriously, guys, I am not totally biased towards Nintendo... like I said, I'm actually thinking about getting an old PSX* to play stuff like Chrono Cross and the Mega Man stuff. Although I've read that most Mega Man stuff is pretty bad on PlayStation...

*But I only am thinking about it because PSone is pretty much completely dead. Otherwise, I wouldn't think of it. I don't want to look like I like PlayStation, because I don't. How could I display something** that is, in the words of Reed Richards, "anathema to my very being?"
An emulator would be better...

**Display, as in have it on the shelf with my Nintendo systems, which I am somewhat proud of...
