Anyone interested enough to keep another thread like this afloat?  We'll see...

Didn't even know NSMB ROM hacking was to this point, but the potential is massive, apparently.  I think I need to play this.

Video Game Chat / OBJECTION: No Threads About Ace Attorney 5!?
« on: November 07, 2013, 11:57:24 PM »
It's pretty good so far.  Visuals are appropriately wonderful for the 3DS, finally playing as Phoenix again, it's just generally nice to have a new story to muck about with.

My one odd complaint is that the fully orchestrated soundtrack doesn't quite evoke the same atmosphere of the old chiptune "Cornered" themes.  Yeaaah, I miss those.

Game Help / In Which I Wine About My Wii U Gamepad
« on: October 22, 2013, 10:10:14 PM »
Soooo a friend o' mine recently had wine spilled on his Wii U gamepad.  Pressing the face buttons feels a little like pressing down on similarly-shaped Play-Doh sculptures.  Long story short, he bought a new Wii U just for the gamepad it offered... agreeing to chip in, I was awarded the console itself, along with the damaged controller.  The one with wine spilled on/in it.  Given that replacements are pricey at best, I'm looking into warranty-voiding repairs as my best option here.  To the Internet with me?  You'd better believe it.

I turn the topic over to y'all thus.  Anyone had experience taking apart/repairing a Gamepad?  Even more broadly, anyone had experience fixing this kind of damage to the controller short of replacing it wholesale?  Suggestions?  I'm all [metaphorical, digital] ears.

Worst case scenario, how essential are our friends A, B, X, and Y to the Wii U experience?

Mario Chat / Too Hard for 'Murica
« on: October 09, 2013, 11:45:31 AM »
So doing an assignment for a New Media course I'm taking right now, on difficulty in video games as it relates to Japan's game industry.  I could hardly do this topic without covering how Super Mario Bros. 2 (the original one that used the first game's engine) was not initially localized due to the huge difficulty spike.  We got a rebrand of Doki Doki Panic, etc. etc.  Initiate-level trivia for a Mario fan.  But I can't seem to find, whether on this site or others, anything concrete saying that the difficulty was a large factor.

This is bad news for me if I want to cite a source as to why SMB2J didn't hit stateside.

Has this actually been examined on a level deeper than hearsay?  Do we know of anyone on the development team or other staff who have said "it was too hard so we didn't localize it"?  Or is a passing mention of "due to the increased difficulty" based on [not much in particular] all that we've got on the subject?  In short, how do we know the higher difficulty prompted the... ahem, Panic?

Help!  My grade depends on y'all!  I might be doomed.

Fan Creations / Fun Voice Times
« on: February 22, 2013, 10:26:24 PM »
For a recent project in my digital audio course I recorded some voiceovers of short sample narrations - things like blurbs, ads, blurbs for ads.  It's been the most fun I've had with an assignment in a while, and I think they turned out pretty well, considering it was my first time doing this sort of thing.

I'm actually not sure anyone on this board has heard my voice before.  In any case, you still wouldn't be, in a way, since none of these is an exact match with my normal speaking voice.  But still some fun.

You should be able to find all three narrations here, and - hopefully - enjoy.

Fan Creations / Album Writing Month
« on: February 06, 2012, 11:30:42 PM »
February Album Writing Month is happening right now.  Write fourteen (and a half) songs in twenty-nine days.  Log your progress on the site and even provide the songs for others to listen to and provide feedback.

My page (one track as of this post)

Any musicians here should look into it.

Video Game Chat / Meta Banned
« on: October 01, 2011, 10:09:49 AM »
Meta Knight has been banned from competitive Brawl, effective early next year.

Personally, I'm still not sure I understand the reasons for banning certain stages, so banning a character really baffles me.  Is MK really that overpowered?  I never thought so.  I've seen him beaten just as often as I've seen him win.  Now, on the one hand, I do tend to get a bit tired of seeing him in a huge number of matches.  The need for diversity is probably the only reason for banning MK that I can get behind.  On the other hand, I get the feeling that for a lot of people it's not so much an issue of diversity as it is an issue of "Meta Knight is too hard to counter, I don't want to do the work."  And that I can't get behind.

Admittedly, I don't play the game competitively, so maybe I'm understating just how overpowered MK is.  Maybe someone else has a more informed position regarding the matter.

General Chat / The Enneagram

Yes, it's yet another personality test.  Specifically, one to find your Enneagram type and wing.

I'm a 6w5, myself, and upon reading the description, it seems to fit.  Anyway, just wondering what results the folks on this forum will get.  Probably fives and sixes for most of us, but maybe I'm way off in that guess.

General Chat / Ponies!
« on: September 17, 2011, 08:19:42 AM »
Long overdue thread probably, but there didn't seem to be a reason to make it when there weren't new episodes airing.  So now that season two has premiered, discuss.  Would be nice if we could keep the most recent episode's spoilers tagged accordingly, by the way.

I like how Pinkie Pie wants to keep the chocolate rain, and expect an appropriate PMV very soon.

I also like how Discord couldn't actually tempt Fluttershy to stop being kind and had to force the change magically.

I didn't like how Pinkie Pie's un-harmonized state didn't give her back her straight hair.  Kind of a missed opportunity there.

Come on, I know for a fact I'm not the only person here who likes the show.

General Chat / Ever Had a Crush on a Fictional Character?
« on: July 26, 2011, 04:18:17 PM »
You know the drill.  Same as the other thread, but more... general.  Of course, in the case of characters from live action works, it might be a bit harder to tell whether it's the character or the actor that is "teh hawt."  Maybe both.

Anyway, Amy Pond (Karen Gillan).  She's Scottish, she's a redhead... she's a Scottish redhead.  That's pretty awesome of her.  (One of those cases where there is probably significant overlap)

Video Game Chat / Run Killers

So there you are on a lazy afternoon, sitting bored.  Hey, here's an idea!  You can go play that one video game that you haven't played in a while!  Except... what about that one escort mission or gimmick level that you always hated?  Man, you would have to do that part again if you replayed the game.

I'm sure most folks here know what I'm talking about.  These are the parts in video games which are not only not up to the standards of the rest of the game they're in, but which can single-handedly eliminate all desire to replay a game when one considers them, even when the rest of the game is superb.  This thread is dedicated to those.  Sort of an anti-"Games You Think Are Perfect," I guess.

One of the examples that comes most readily to mind for me is the Ice Cave segment of Uncharted 2, which consists of a bunch of slow-paced platforming and puzzles without much action to break it up.  The one fight that does happen here is semi-scripted and not at all similar to or as fun as the gunfights in other parts of the game.

Another game with a couple of these moments is Spyro 2 - particularly the "popcorn" game in Magma Cone, the "Guide the Alchemist" mission in Fracture Hills, riding the Trolley in Breeze Harbor, and the Lava Lizards challenges in Skelos Badlands - all of these require you to have extremely quick (as in, faster than even many difficult games require) reflexes and/or employ trial and error and memorization to win.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker's Earth and Wind Temples are some of the most tedious dungeons I've ever had to trudge through.  In comparison, sailing around and looking for the Triforce shards is positively relaxing - at least there's good music and a bright blue sky to keep you company.

I'm sure you guys can think of some others.  Post 'em here.

Or just keep it to yourself and leave this thread hanging awkwardly without a single reply, that works too
